Updated Cygwin Package: proftpd-1.2.9-1

New News:
=== ====
I have updated the version of ProFTPD to 1.2.9-1. The tarballs
should be available on a Cygwin mirror near you shortly.

Old News:
=== ====
ProFTPD is an enhanced FTP server with a focus toward simplicity,
security, and ease of configuration. It features a very Apache-like
configuration syntax, and a highly customizable server infrastructure,
including support for multiple 'virtual' FTP servers, anonymous FTP, and
permission-based directory visibility.

See the ProFTPD home page for more details:

    http://www.proftpd.org/

Please read the README file:

    /usr/share/doc/cygwin/proftpd-1.2.9.README

since it covers requirements, installation, known issues, etc.

To update your installation, click on the "Install Cygwin now" link on
the http://cygwin.com/ web page. This downloads setup.exe to your
system. Then, run setup and answer all of the questions.

In the US,
ftp://mirrors.rcn.net/mirrors/sources.redhat.com/cygwin/
is a reliable high bandwidth connection.

[fetchmail] Updated Cygwin Package: fetchmail-6.2.5-2

New News:
=== ====
I have updated the version of fetchmail to 6.2.5-2. The tarballs should
be available on a Cygwin mirror near you shortly.

The only change between this version and the previous one is the
following:

The run control file (e.g., ~/.fetchmailrc) permission check is now
conditionally enabled at runtime for Windows versions, filesystems,
and/or configurations that support it instead of unconditionally
disabled at build time. For example, the check is always disabled under
Windows 9x/Me, but enabled for Windows NT/2000/XP with NTFS and
CYGWIN=ntsec.

Old News:
=== ====
Fetchmail is a remote mail retrieval and forwarding utility intended
for use over on-demand TCP/IP links, like SLIP or PPP connections.
Fetchmail supports every remote-mail protocol currently in use on the
Internet (POP2, POP3, RPOP, APOP, KPOP, all IMAPs, ESMTP ETRN, IPv6,
and IPSEC) for retrieval. Then Fetchmail forwards the mail through SMTP
so you can read it through your favorite mail client.

See the fetchmail home page for more details:

    http://catb.org/~esr/fetchmail/

Please read the README file:

Updated: cURL 7.10.8-1

cURL has been updated to version 7.10.8-1.

Since several releases have passed since the last time I
updated the Cygwin build, I'm not including the list of fixes
in this email; if you're interested, please read the following
upstream release announcements:

 7.10.5: http://curl.haxx.se/mail/archive-2003-05/0100.html
 7.10.6: http://curl.haxx.se/mail/archive-2003-07/0150.html
 7.10.7: http://curl.haxx.se/mail/archive-2003-08/0081.html
 7.10.8: http://curl.haxx.se/mail/archive-2003-11/0001.html

All current and previous announcements are also available at:
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?forum=curl-announce

Probably the most significant recent update (at least for us
windows users) is support for NTLM authentication schemes,
along with a new --anyauth command-line option that instructs
cURL to use the best supported authentication method.

The new NTLM support does NOT include the ability to
automatically supply the NTLM credentials based on the currently
logged-in user account, so you'll still have to supply user
and password with -u...

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

To obtain this update, run Cygwin's setup.exe wizard.

You can obtain a copy of setup.exe by clicking

Updated: OpenSSH-3.7.1p2-2

I've just updated the version of OpenSSH to 3.7.1p2-2.

This release is binary-wise the same as 3.7.1p2-1. The changes are
only in the scripts ssh-host-config and ssh-user-config and in the
README file /usr/share/doc/Cygwin/openssh.README.

PLEASE NOTE, that you need administrator privileges to install the
sshd service and to create user accounts. So, run ssh-host-config
only as administrator if you want to install sshd as service.

The important changes are:

In ssh-host-config:

  - Add a lot of information printed while doing the job. I beg
you to read that information. It's not printed just for fun.

  - Supporting the changes in Windows 2003 Server, which basically
requires to create a new privileged account. The description
*why* that's necessary is given in the script itself and in the
README. What happens is, that the script asks you if it should
install a new privileged user called 'sshd_server', which will
be used as the account under which the sshd service will run.
If you say "no" here, you're on your own! Otherwise it asks
for a password for this new account, creates the account and uses
    it for the service installation.

  - Try hard to create file and directory permissions and ownership
    as correct as possible.

Updated: wtf-0.0.4-5

Version 0.0.4-5 of wtf is available and should be coming soon to a mirror
near you. See below for a list of changes.

NOTE: this version requires Cygwin 1.5.*, and *will not* work with earlier
versions of Cygwin. If you still use Cygwin 1.3.22 (although why you'd
want to is beyond me), install wtf-0.0.4-3.

wtf(6) is a utility provided by some UNIX and UNIX-like systems including
Slackware Linux and NetBSD. It translates acronyms and filename suffixes
by looking up the definition of a term in various databases.

I've added the OLOCA (<http://cygwin.com/acronyms/>) to the database
directory, so the acronyms from the Cygwin lists will be found (yes, you
can now really ask "wtf is cgf" ;-) ). There's a perl script in the
source package to update the OLOCA database from the web version of the
OLOCA for those who can't wait for regular package updates (also requires
wget). See the README file for details.

Changes since 0.0.4-4:

- Fixed wtfindex producing corrupt files on text mounts (reported in
<http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin/2003-11/msg00173.html>)

Changes since 0.0.4-3:

- Fixed wtf crash when datafile is missing (reported in
<http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin/2003-09/msg00254.html>)
- Compiled against Cygwin 1.5.*
- Moved documentation to /usr/share

Updated: wget-1.9-1

DESCRIPTION:
GNU Wget is a free software package for retrieving files using HTTP,
HTTPS and FTP, the two most widely-used Internet protocols. It is a
non-interactive commandline tool, so it may easily be called from
scripts, cron jobs, terminals without Xsupport, etc.

CYGWIN NEWS:
- moved documentation to /usr/share
- updated to version 1.9
- removed CAN-2002-1344 patch (included in v1.9)
- removed init.c and recur.c patches (included in v1.9)
- keep netrc.c and wget.texi patches
- removed info dir update from postinstall script, _update-info-dir
takes cares of this now

WGET NEWS:
** It is now possible to specify that POST method be used for HTTP
requests. For example, `wget --post-data="id=foo&data=bar" URL' will
send a POST request with the specified contents.

** IPv6 support is available, although it's still experimental.

** The `--timeout' option now also affects DNS lookup and establishing
the TCP connection. Previously it only affected reading and writing
data. Those three timeouts can be set separately using
`--dns-timeout', `--connection-timeout', and `--read-timeout',
respectively.

** Download speed shown by the progress bar is based on the data
recently read, rather than the average speed of the entire download.

Updated: perl-5.8.2-1

perl-5.8.2-1 release has been uploaded to sourceware
-- it should be on the mirrors soon.

News:

- Cygwin Perl now with threads support.
- No IPC support yet, helpers wanted.
- perl-5.8.1 introduced some features which makes it binary incompatible
with perl-5.8.0 in certain cases. The problem with hash randomisation has
been fixed so it should be binary compatible with perl-5.8.0 now and the
threads problem doesn't affect Cygwin since perl-5.8.0 was not available
  with threads.
- perl-5.8.0 was removed from the distribution entirely, perl-5.6.1-2
remains as the previous version because perl-5.8.x still seems to be a
little picky about the system running on, i.e. it doesn't like Win98/ME
  very much.

More details in the official 'Perl 5.8.2 Release Announcement':
http://use.perl.org/articles/03/11/07/117238.shtml?tid=6

As always, you should conduct an appropriate level of testing before
using any new product in your production environment.

Notes:

The README

nfs-server 2.2.47-2

The nfs-server package is now available for experimentation.

This package is a port of the Universal NFS server. It contains
an NFS daemon (rpc.nfsd) and a mount daemon (rpc.mountd). Unlike
other NFS daemons, this NFS server runs entirely in user space.
This makes it a tad slower than other NFS implementations, and
also introduces some awkwardnesses in the semantics (for instance,
moving a file to a different directory will render its file handle
invalid).

Changes and limitations relative to the original nfs-server source:

    * initial Cygwin port based on work by Rico Junio
    * exports file access control checks disabled
    * exented group info disabled
    * added nfs-server-config script for initial setup

                       *** INSTALLATION ***

To update your installation, click on the "Install Cygwin now" link on
the http://cygwin.com/ web page. This downloads setup.exe to your
system. Then, run setup and answer all of the questions. nfs-server
is located in the "Net" category. Click on this category to install
nfs-server if it is not already installed. If nfs-server is already
installed, it will be updated automatically.

If you have questions or comments, please send them to the Cygwin
mailing list at: cygwin <at> cygwin.com . I would appreciate it if you would
use this mailing list rather than emailing me directly. This includes
ideas and comments about the setup utility or Cygwin in general.

Updated: tar-1.13.25-5

I've updated tar to version 1.3.25-5. The only change in this version of
tar is that it should now deal correctly with listed-incremental backups.
It was previously broken due to the increase in inode size manifested
in cygwin 1.5.x.

Unfortunately the size change means that the old data files stored by tar
are no longer compatible with files from the new version. This will cause
some unchanged files to be archived the first time the new tar is run.

If none of the above makes any sense to you, you can safely ignore my
mumblings. I suspect that very few cygwin users use gnu tar's
incremental features.

To update your installation, click on the "Install Cygwin now" link on
the http://cygwin.com/ web page. This downloads setup.exe to your
system. Then, run setup and answer all of the questions.

If you have questions or comments, please send them to the Cygwin
mailing list (see http://cygwin.com/lists.html).
