February BSDA locations

The BSDA certification exam is available at the following locations in
February:

SCALE: Los Angeles, California

 	Saturday, February 9 at 11:00 or 15:30

Seating is limited to 40 per exam session (2 sessions in total).

FOSDEM: Brussels, Belgium

 	Saturday, February 23 at 14:30 or 16:30
 	Sunday, February 24 at 10:00 or 13:00 or 15:00

Seating is limted to 15 per exam session (5 sessions in total).

Registration and URLs for more information regarding the conference
locations can be found here:

https://register.bsdcertification.org//register/events

Pre-registration is required. Don't wait til the last minute as you'll
need a BSDCG ID first and that can take up to 24 hours to receive. Also,
as exam sessions are filled, they will disappear from the drop down menu
from which you choose the exam location and time. If an exam time appears
to be missing, that is the reason why.

The exam costs $75 USD to take; those who participated in the 2007 Beta
program are eligible for a 50% discount.

possible to cover all BSDA in a 3 to 5 day training?

I have taught over 16 commercial multi-day classes covering BSD
administration which have also included some extras like shell
fundamentals, some Apache HTTPD, packet filtering (IPFW, PF, or IPF)
basics, postfix or sendmail basics, and BIND basics. I am currently
planning a class to be held near DFW Texas the second week of April. I
have used basically the same *BSD course outlines that I have improved and
modified over six years. So I am wondering if I should completely change
my course outline and courseware to just specifically cover "BSDA" (so I
would cut out a lot of what I currently cover but add a lot more).

What do you think about: Is it possible to cover all the BSD Certification
Group BSDA (BSD Associate) Certification Requirements in a 3 to 5 day
training?

I don't think it is, especially since it should cover some installation
and some steps specific for four BSD operating systems.

Also, is it more of a selling point or more value to have a well rounded
"BSDA" course versus a BSD-specific admin course that also covers some
Apache HTTPD, packet filtering (IPFW, PF, or IPF) basics, postfix or
sendmail basics, and BIND basics?

I am curious about your thoughts on this.

p.s. A few months ago, I started building a database of BSD and open
source trainers. Many from this list emailed their details. I am slowly
working on a website that will highlight the skills taught and locations
of trainers.

We teach FreeBSD basics and NetBSD admin here and we could probably
map the FreeBSD 14 week course to the BSDA outcomes. These are 2nd and
3rd year community college students with Linux Admin, perl and Unix shell
background. No one with just Windows Admin can keep their head above water
in these courses, let alone swim. Prior training and/or experience is a
necessity.

I think there is a market for both types of course, a BSDA
course as well as an admin course covering internet infrastructure on the
foundational OS for it. This is subject to the prevailing malaise in IT
enrollment which isn't going away soon. IT itself is great these days, but
undergrad IT training is decidedly not, everywhere I go.

BSDA class, April 22-25, Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas

I am teaching a class focusing on the BSD Certification Group's BSDA (BSD
"Associate") Certification exam objectives in April near DFW in Texas.

The curriculum used for over a dozen BSD administration classes has been
adjusted to reflect the BSDA objectives which are based on the BSD
Certification Group's Job Task Analysis.

The BSDA covers over 100 objectives in seven knowledge domains:
fundamental Unix skills; installing and upgrading the operating system and
third-party software; basic system administration; files, file systems,
and disks; network administration; users and accounts management; and
security.

In addition, the training will cover ports and packaging systems,
networking setup and troubleshooting, enabling and managing services,
file system management, various security techniques and tools, startup
scripts, cron, periodic tasks, inetd, syslogging, SSH, and more.
The hands-on class will also provide students with experience
with multiple operating system installations.

The course details are at

http://www.pugetsoundtechnology.com/training/bsda/

Discounts are available for groups and early registration.

Students will receive a copy of:

- The BSD Associate Study Guide: The Beginning BSD Unix Administration
Book (printed book based on the bsdwiki project).

BSDA at BSDCan? (was Re: BSDA in Toronto in April)

I did a little bit of hunting around on the sites and didn't find any
information one way or the other.

Will the BSDA be offered at BSDCan this year? I'm trying to get a few
people I work with through this but having some difficulty finding a
venue for the test that I can justify.

Definitely. Once we know the room number and pin down the exam times,
we'll add them to the registration site. Dan, is that something we can do
now, or do we have to wait for confirmation from the venue?

Cheers,

Dru
