 Many thanks,[[BR]]
    "sudo port install boehmgc"[[BR]]
 Now works.[[BR]]
 The bug must have been a while back.... :-)[[BR]]
 I'll follow up what has broken in expat.

 Its missing most of the extensions I had as variants in the patch I
 attached earlier, eg hstore, btree_gist, ltree, citext. Can these either
 be added to the contribs line, or variants added as per that patch?

 If this were github I'd send a pull request but since it's not I just went
 ahead and added the appropriate patch and portfile which uses Vince's fix
 above.

 Also, btw, if anyone is running this on mountain lion, you probably also
 wanna bump your SHMALL/SHMMAX, or else you'll hit another error when you
 try to create the defaultdb:

 sudo sysctl -w kern.sysv.shmall=65536
 sudo sysctl -w kern.sysv.shmmax=16777216

Comment:

 I don't quite understand the patch... what component of coreutils is arb
 using, and how does that relate to whether you use `sed` or `gsed`?

 FYI there's nothing wrong with using `reinplace` to change "sed" to
 "gsed", except that the `sed` that `reinplace` runs needs to know what
 character encoding the files use. It assumes UTF-8, but at least one of
 the files you're reinplacing is not UTF-8. So you have to tell it a
 suitable locale. The locale "C" is ofter suitable, and that is what we
 have been using in other ports to fix this error:

 {{{
 reinplace locale -C ...
 }}}
