Posters!

http://tinyurl.com/wn-posters

The above link is to a section on the English-language Wikinews soliciting designs for a promotional poster for the project. However, I see no reason why this should be restricted to English speakers. A design where the text can be substituted out would be most welcome – heck! Even a blank design ready to have text added would be good.

As mentioned at the above link, the Foundation will cover costs on this. That was one of the points covered at Wikimania – there is money to help non-WP projects promote themselves. A2 or A1 printing is expensive, so getting the cash up-front or reimbursed should take a load off people’s minds about this.

At the moment I’m waiting for the lightning-bolt of inspiration to put up a first design. I’d be delighted if someone beats me to it, but there are a few points to note…

First and foremost, is making your design something other people can adapt and work on; the two packages most likely to end up used are Gimp and Photoshop. I’ve been told Gimp can open most Photoshop files, but not vice-versa – so be prepared to look for alternative ways to save your work in case someone says, “I like this and want to try some changes”.

Don’t rasterise or merge down! These are the terms from Photoshop, probably similar in Gimp, but it basically is that you don’t turn text into a graphic that can’t be scaled up

If you’re using graphics from somewhere like commons try to pick ones that will scale to A2 or A1 without becoming pixellated. I think we’re in the clear with the Wikinews logo – which is a brilliant piece of work – but other images may be problematic.

Upload A3 or A4 examples of your work.

If – like me – you’re none to hot on the graphics front then there’s still the text part of the poster to work on. With something that’s going to be A2 or A1 you’ve enough space to comfortably fit a couple of short paragraphs pitching the project. Can you think of a good recruitment pitch to fit in that space?

FW: Print edition

I'm forwarding this to the mailing list and hoping attachments aren't
stripped. Assuming they aren't, this is the template for English Wikinews'
Print Edition.

Firstly, I'd like as many en.wn people as possible able to create a Print
Ed. in case Craig has problems with it again. Second, I'm wondering if there
is any interest in other language editions translating the template and
running their own print edition.

From my own experience, this is the most effective advertising/handout for
meetups and conferences. I printed numerous copies at Wikimania this year
and all got taken away.

Use of the template requires OpenOffice, I managed quite happily to open it
with version 2 (latest British English version) but version 3 of OO is out
and it should happily work with that too.

Filling it in should be fairly simple and obvious, just lots of cut and
paste; just look at one of the existing versions on Commons to see what it
should look like. For anyone setting up non-English version you may wish to
strip out sections if your language's Wikipedia doesn't have current events,
or there is no Quote Of The Day to use.

If the attachment is stripped, please email me directly for a copy. The file
is 264 KB so there should be no problems mailing it around.

Hi,
We actually did have a print edition for today. I finally got some time
to do one :). I expect to be able to continue to keep them up to date
for now.

I have attached the template for if you ever ant to do one. For the most
part it is just lots of copying and pasting. You use yesterdays news and
todays stuff for everything else.

upload size limit upped

I just read on commons-l, that the upload size limit got boosted from
20mb to 100mb. This is good news for us, as whenever we do video
reporting, we've always had to use extreme compression/low resolution,
or split it up into multiple clips. Now we should not need to do that
anymore. yipee!

[Help] About Participate in Wikipedia - knoweldge sharing.

Dear friends,
We are conducting a study on the motivation of the knowledge sharing on Wikipedia. Your experience of the read from and write to Wikipedia is very important to the design and management of this knowledge platform. The survey will take about
two minutes. We deeply appreciate your help on answering the following questions.

After the survey is done, we will randomly select twenty persons and present them with USB 2GB Flash Drives. Besides, with each valid questionnaire, we will donate US $1 dollar to the Wikimedia Foundation. The result of this survey is analyzed in an anonymous way and is only regarded as the academic use. Please feel free to fill out the questionnaire. Thanks again for your time and valuable input.

May happiness and health be with you everyday!

Re: [Help] About Participate in Wikipedia - knoweldge sharing.

For someone who is a professor at "National Chengchi University", its
interesting to note that their survey link is a url using an IP
address (as opposed to a domain name), and port 8080. One would think
that someone who is a professor at a university, would set up there
survey on the domain name of their university using the standard http
port.

Re: [Help] About Participate in Wikipedia - knoweldge sharing.

does seem strange, but the ip resolves to the netblock for ncc.edu.tw as does the email.  looks genuine enough ips/servers, cant talk for the donation stuff though
