Hi everyone, OCLC is seeking a Wikipedian in Residence to serve three months this summer at their San Mateo, California (SF Bay Area) office. This would be a remarkable experience for anyone, including library sciences students. Learn more here: https://jobs-oclc.icims.com/jobs/2081/job "OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. is a nonprofit, membership, computer library service and research organization dedicated to the public purposes of furthering access to the world's information and reducing information costs. Tens of thousands of libraries around the world use OCLC services to locate, acquire, catalog, lend and preserve library materials." OCLC is one of the most important figures in library sciences internationally - your local library most likely utilizes their services. Apply today and PLEASE forward to any appropriate parties, mailing lists, etc. Tweet, Facebook, whatever! Thank you, Sarah --

This Saturday: Editing Workshop at WMF for Fulbright scholars

Hello again, Bay Area Wikimedians!

I have been talking to the west coast Institute of International Education, known for running the Fulbright scholars programs, and we have agreed to hold an editing workshop for visiting Fulbright scholars (i.e. Fulbright scholarship recipients from around the world studying in Bay Area universities).

The editing workshop will be held at the Wikimedia Foundation office (149 New Montgomery St., 3rd floor, San Francisco, a two-minute walk from the Montgomery BART), on Saturday April 14th, 12pm-5pm, and approximately 12 scholars, a few IIE staff members, and a few new WMF employees will participate.  Lunch and refreshments will be provided.  Bring your own laptop, please!

We'll need volunteer veteran Wikipedians to tutor the visiting scholars in basic editing, introduce them to Wikipedia norms (possibly not just in English Wikipedia), and help them navigate to useful places such as [[Wikipedia:Backlog]], or WikiProjects matching their academic (or other) interests.

If you're interested in attending and providing tutoring, please let me know in the coming 48 hours (I apologize for the very short notice!) so we can plan the food.

I look forward to seeing some of you on Saturday!

Cheers,

   Asaf

Re: This Saturday: Editing Workshop -- Hi, Asaf From Tom in SF

Hi, Asaf,
Just checking -- I am a Wikipedia editor for the last few years, with 50,000 edits.
However, I do not have a laptop that I can bring to the Wikimedia office.
(I was just there on Feb. 4 for the meeting they had of local Wikimedians.)
Let me know if any chance you might take someone without a laptop, since this is on such short notice.
Thanks,
Tom Mayer

Innovate/Activate afterparty April 20 -- open to all

I hope to see some of you at the Innovate/Activate conference next
weekend. (Sadly, regular registration has filled up, though there is a
waiting list.) But if you couldn't make it, think about coming to the
afterparty to hang out with other free knowledge advocates!

Via the conference list:

"Engine Advocacy has officially agreed to sponsor the afterparty for
Saturday night! Please RSVP and spend the word to all your folks who
will be in the Bay Area. All are welcome, even if they are not coming
to the conference!"

Link is:

Cheers,
Kat
