Yes. See http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Performance_tuning

Yes. Usually this happens in response to some kind of web request.
Perhaps if you could give details of the requests being made to the
wiki, then we could help you to figure out why this is happening in
your case.

All I have are partial logs from my domain host showing CPU percentages of
100+% tied to index.php of the wiki. Beyond that, I've got nothing.

Getting rid of spam pages that all have the same format

Hi all,

I run a small but up-to-date MediaWiki install on my domain, and recently, it's been hit by a crazy amount of
spam. I've taken to installing as many extensions as I can for preventing it in the future: Bad Behavior 2
and Bad Behavior 2 Extended, Spam Blacklist, reCaptcha for creating new accounts, even limiting edits to
users with confirmed email accounts. Nothing seems to be helping. And in the meanwhile, I'm stuck
deleting pages one-by-one, because each spam page is made by a new (fake) user with a different IP address.

Is there a way to mass-delete spam pages that all have the same format?

So far all of these spam pages have had a single period on the first few lines, then centered and in "BIG" type,
three greater-thans, an external link to a forum site that always has a different string at the end, and
three less-thans. Then there are a lot more periods on lines by themselves, and a few blurbs of text with
external links.

If this isn't possible, what about choosing (e.g. via tick boxes) all pages to delete from a certain date or
date range? Because my Wiki is so small, sometimes the only edits on a given day are from spammers, so
something like that would really help me delete these pages, especially given the different user/IP
problem (otherwise I'd just user Special:Nuke).

I'm getting the IP blacklist from StopForumSpam, but I don't know how to best get rid of the spam that's
already there.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Popup links with imagemap

I've got popup links (i.e. link opens a new tab or window) on certain pages
and templates on my site. I used Jimbo's instructions, Popup links in
MediaWiki to new window
(http://jimbojw.com/wiki/index.php?title=Popup_links_in_MediaWiki_to_new_win
dow).

If anyone has gotten it to work with imagemaps, would you mind giving me
some tips? If not, if anyone has a a link to a solution that lets me have
popup imagemap links, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks.

I should have added that if you need a reference, Siebrand or Nikerabbit would
vouch for me, I'm sure.

With Siebrand Mazeland I had very bad experience see :

Assume good faith until proven otherwise.

But it is your choice.

different views for different users

Hi,

I'd like to set my mediawiki up with two completely different views:

* 'Normal' users will see the wiki as if it was a static web site. None
of the options or tabs normally seen along the top of the wiki page or
down the left side should be visible to them at all. They will not be
able to log in or edit any pages.

* Admin users will see the wiki as a normal wiki, with all the default
options and tabs visible, once they have logged in (the link to the
log-in page will be from an external site)

Is there any simple way to do this?

Thanks
Graham

I haven't tried, but the skin is fairly late to be loaded (I think) so
you might be able to detect the user via an extension and then
dynamically update the default skin and which skins are available to the
user... essentially pigeonholing them once you know what kind of user
they are.

Cheers,
Rob.
