In general, I don't think that magic words should be expanded with local
values; the nicest way of thinking about it is probably that the page on
foowiki is a 'window' onto the page at commons; it's still a page *at commons*,
not on foowiki. However, I agree that {{CONTENTLANGUAGE}} has the strongest
case for being an exception to that rule.

Checked on test.wiki; the issue is the non-ASCII character in the *name*; using
the character in the script file is ok, it seems. And adding a non-ASCII
character to the name of another script that had strictly ASCII scriptfile,
also made it disappear. Retitling for clarity.

In general, when fetching remote content we prefer to have it render before
fetching. There's no guarantee that the local wiki knows how to handle all of
the magic words that the foreign one does. This can end up with poorly-rendered
content.

FWIW, we should already be doing this. I added fetching remote descriptions
with uselang back in r46369...which btw, is a big hack for commons mostly, and
should be replaced with a more defined interface for fetching descriptions,
rather than hoping action=render gives us what we want.

Repurposing as a FileRepo bug, because it has nothing to do with language setup

[[wikt:en:special:sitematrix]] now has additional entries, which I suppose must
not have been there when this bug was filed (?). Could you please just add to
$wgImportSources all the language prefixes existing for any project at the time
you effect this feature request (except 'en')? Thanks.

I don't think it has any entries now that it didn't before; it's just that I
only listed the existing Wiktionaries (minus English, because it's us, and Toki
Pona, because it has no entries and is closed). But if it won't cause problems
for the list to include prefixes that currently only have Wikipedias, not
Wiktionaries, then sure, I guess we might as well include them against the
possibility that they'll someday have Wiktionaries.

Does MW run at all? This would sound like an issue with PHP not being able to
talk to mySQL. Can you confirm that /tmp/mysql.sock does in fact exist?

WORKSFORME. Can switch between all skins (including reported MySkin) without
any problems. Issues with the tabs must've been sorted out a long time ago.
