$6M passed

In some time zones, it was done before 2009. And this is the most
successful fundraising.

I think that we have two conclusions from this fundraising:
* Jimmy should make appeal earlier as WMF will need more money the
next year + people will have less money because of the whole year of
recession.
* It would be good to find local prominent people who would write
their own appeals for particular audiences. For example, prominent
persons from France and Germany...

Re: $6M passed

Hoi,
Six million dollar is a lot of money. However given what we do and what we
stand for, it is not too much to ask for. This fundraiser proves that a well
managed fundraiser makes a big difference. So my compliments for the effort
and the people involved in making it happen for us :)

I am sure that we have learned valuable lessons this time. Indeed getting
the message out by people that are recognised as having something valid to
say is a great help. We do not have many such people because our community
is not one of individual recognition. That only makes it a much more
interesting challenge :)

Any way.. Gelukkig Nieuwjaar :)
Thanks,

Wikimania official announcement

Dear all,

Wikimedia Argentina, in collaboration with the Wikimedia Foundation,
is pleased to announce that Wikimania 2009 will take place in Buenos
Aires on August 26th, 27th and 28th. We invite the worldwide Wikimedia
and free-knowledge community to attend to the event in which we will
be discussing the present and future of our projects, other wikis,
open-source software and free content.

The conference will run for 3 days, with an optional welcome dinner on
August 25th, and the special closing Wikimania party on Augusts 28th.
Besides the exciting conferences, we are planning a set of activities
for those who also want to enjoy Buenos Aires renowned nightlife. So
don't forget to polish your shoes to dance tango and reading your eyes
for a lot of sightseeing!

We will be opening the call for speakers and scholarship applications
during the following weeks, and the assistance registration in March.
News about the event will be published in the Wikimania 2009 web site
[wikimania2009.wikimedia.org]

See you in Buenos Aires!

On behalf of the organizing team,
Patricio Lorente

To relay a message from the nowiki Village Pump: Will the banner be removed
now that the goal has been reached?

On a personal note, I think getting local people to write appeals is a great
idea for next year's fundraiser.

I don't know whether getting to $6M will lead to an early end, but I
would note that the previously announced end date was January 10th.

Congrats on getting to $6M (which means WMF should well exceed revenue
targets this year since $6M was the Annual revenue target for
community plus major donors).

Good news! Fundraiser officially passes 6m mark!

Hey folks -

This is a very quick note, officially updating everyone on the
progress of the fundraiser. Many of you will already know this, but I
wanted to make it official :-)

Currently, you will see that the sitenotice thermometer says we've
reached 6.1 million dollars, which means we have exceeded our original
goal of six million dollars! This is fantastic, and I'm really happy.

To put that in context: In 2008-09, prior to the launch of the
fundraiser, we had received just under two million dollars in
donations and commitments from a mix of foundations, individual donors
and business development revenues. (That includes the 08-09 1m from
Sloan, which will arrive this month.) Since its launch, the
fundraiser has brought in a little over four million dollars. This
means we currently have received in 08-09 a total of 6.1 million
dollars, which will fully cover our projected 08-09 costs.

Last year, by contrast, the fundraiser brought in a total of 1.6
million dollars.

For the Wikimedia Foundation to more than double donations during a
time of major global financial crisis is an amazing accomplishment -
and is testimony to the dedication and strength of our supporters.
They believe in what we're doing and understand why it's important:
I'm grateful to each and every one of them.

And I want to thank everyone who has contributed to this year's
fundraiser. There are too many people to name individually, and even
