Re: Wikimania-Stipendien / Scholarships

Hi, (deutsche Version siehe unten)

a short update from the Wikimania front (Dept. for scholarships):

WMCH received two applications for four scholarships.

The board has now to decide if it wants to score them and if there
should be a minimum score be imposed. At least a serious interest and
involvement in the Wikimedia movement should be visible.

Another option is that Wikimedia CH looks at the list of german
applications - WMDE received 38 applications for 16 scholarships - and
look for WMCH members among the applications to use the left over
scholarships to take over the best two or three applications from WMDE.
This way more scholarships could be granted in total.

Is there any opposition for this suggestion?

Deutsch:

Manuel

thanks a lot for that awesome work and support!

It is really surprising that this all happened quietly in the background ;-)

I am really happy to see this.

I didn't meant that I am missing a form of communication. Actually I
missed the techblog, but that's a different story.

We were well aware of the idea that WMF and Pediapress wanted to work to
make ZIM in Collection extension happen. I expected that there will be a
lot of technical questions during the implementation phase which will
show up on dev-l, and that didn't happen - what is a good sign.

So we knew that there was an idea and WMF and PediaPress wanted to work
on it and it looks like the project wasn't ready yet - and suddenly,
it's done, it's here, it works... that's amazing.

Re: [Executive] Web site, proposals

Dear all,

today I approach you in my position as CIO of Wikimedia CH. In the past
we had several discussions about a relaunch of the current website.

We have asked for input on content / features as well as ideas for a
"swiss design":
* http://www.wikimedia.ch/Site_web
* http://www.wikimedia.ch/Website_2011

The list of features more or less is equal with that what the webteam
has came up with in 2008 and that has been implemented in the current
website. On the other hand we all agree that the current website needs a
graphical relaunch - at the moment it doesn't have any graphical concept
and neither Wikimedia CH in general has.

Ludovic and I have collected proposals for the relaunch. After a
analysis of what we have received I have compiled a list and ask you for
feedback:
* http://www.wikimedia.ch/Website_2011#Evaluation_of_Offers

As announced by our president, the website topic will be on the agenda
at the General Assembly on April 30th
* http://www.wikimedia.ch/General_Assembly_2011

Thanks for your attention and input,

/Manuel

Deutsch: Re: [Executive] Web site, proposals

Hallo zusammen,

* http://www.wikimedia.ch/Site_web
* http://www.wikimedia.ch/Website_2011

* http://www.wikimedia.ch/Website_2011#Evaluation_of_Offers

April
* http://www.wikimedia.ch/General_Assembly_2011

Vielen Dank für Eure Beteiligung

/Manuel

Questions about the "New Web site" project

Hi,

it seems that people are motivated by improving our Web site and also
maybe more. See last email from Manuel.

I have tried in the past hour to understand better what wanted to be
improved? Why? in which way? by who? etc.

I didn't really find answers to my questions, so I simply write them all
here:
* What is the scope: create visual guidelines, improve the Web site
engine, improve the web site content (I ask because this page
http://www.wikimedia.ch/Website_2011 speaks a lot about the visual
guidelines and not really about the Web site)?
* Who are the sponsors and the project leader(s)?
* What is the timeline and the decision process?
* What is exactly wrong with our current Web site (did not find something) ?
* What are the business requirements (I have only find
http://www.wikimedia.ch/Site_web#Goal but this is too fuzzy and I guess
for this reason I feel our current solution is already matching them)?

Having an answer to these questions is mandatory to have a chance to
work on a successful IT project.

Thank you for your help.

Emmanuel

Re: Questions about the "New Web site" project

Hi Emmanuel,

thanks for your questions. I think I can answer a few of them.

On 12.03.2011 15:53, Emmanuel Engelhart wrote:

refering to the discussions we had on the board mailing list the
graphical design is the major problem.

I have asked that question as well. In 2008 the webteam has done
extensive brainstorming and clustered all the ideas to a concept which
has lead to the current website. We never took care of the graphical
design though. The brainstorming that has taken place on
http://www.wikimedia.ch/Site_web comes up more or less with exactly the
same things and what we already have.

Apart from the website Wikimedia CH does not have a corporate design.
Logically we first develop a corporate design which works for everything
and then make the website look accordingly.

> * Who are the sponsors and the project leader(s)?
> * What is the timeline and the decision process?

This is all unclear to me. As CIO this falls into my responsibility but
the "project" was imposed by the board, all I could do so far was
commenting on discussion that happened on the board mailing list. I have
asked to communicate to the webteam but this didn't happen so far. From
that I can only assume that no project has been defined yet. The board
my confirm or clarify.

> * What is exactly wrong with our current Web site (did not find something) ?

See my first answer.

> * What are the business requirements (I have only find

Well, as I said in the first answer, I have the same impression and the
discussions on the board mailing list lead to the same conclusion.

Except for the design. And that's a more general thing. But the website
will be indeed the first thing to be adopted, also the presentation of
the information needs to be made clearer and less cluttered (main page
for instance).

> Having an answer to these questions is mandatory to have a chance to

Sure. That's why I started this discussion.
