Today is Document Freedom Day: Roughly 200 teams from more than 60
countries worldwide are organising local activities to raise awareness
for Document Freedom and Open Standards. To support the initiatives
surrounding the first day to celebrate document liberation, DFD
starter packs containing a DFD flag, t-shirts and leaflets have been
sent to the first 100 registered teams over the past weeks.

In a world where records are increasingly kept in electronic form,
Open Standards are crucial for valuable information to outlive the
application in which it was initially generated. The question of
Document Freedom has severe repercussions for freedom of choice,
competition, markets and the sovereignty of countries and their
  governments.

"We are very happy about the response and activities that teams around
the world have scheduled," says Ivan Jelic, DFD Coordinator.
"Activities we have heard about range from local speeches and
information events through to prizes being given to governmental
bodies that adopted good policies in the field of Document Freedom and
Open Standards. It will be a challenge to document everything that is
  taking place today."

video background in sign language? do we have a partnership?

hi,

does anybody have / know about a partnership for sign language, either
for promotianal videos, or "standard" videos for wikimedia commons?
one of the few companies doing this i know is
http://www.dgs-filme.de/GWHomepage/, they sometimes also work for
free, especially for children's sites.

Cheap film scanners at this time?

Time to ask this again! (i.e. I'm thinking of spending money on one.)

What's the state of affordable negative scanners at this time? I'm
seeing little things that require Windows for £70 or so. Anyone bought
any such device recently?

Yes I purchased one but have only attempted the transparency scanning
and the light is too bright, so the slides are not true color. I have
not attempted a negative scanner. I used to pay a fellow in Newmarket
about 50 cents or more for slides and negatives and they turned out
terrific. Check out a few of those on wayneray.ca/archives and link
on the Commons links there.

It is called *ION slides 2 PC using arcsoft photoimpression 6.1, I
paid about 79$ Canadian

Yeah, the Ion is the cheap one I was looking at :-)

How correctable is the colour? Is the light so bright it blows out
highlights on the sensor? (These things basically use the same sensors
as compact digital cameras.) Correctable I can deal with (I could even
script it), blown highlights are another matter. Does it only save as
JPEG or also as PNG/TIFF?

My main application is the two boxes of photos upstairs going back
twenty years: lots and lots and lots of negatives. I think with the
film scanner I'll need to be getting a 2TB disk drive.

(Also looking at the somewhat pricier ones, about double the price.

Re: Cheap film scanners at this time?

Not exactly a recommendation but a suggestion of something to avoid: There are a number of flatbed scanners that have "film scanner" attachments.  If you plan on scanning a lot of negatives I'd suggest not buying something like this because they are typically very slow.

Then again you might not be able to find something in your price range that is in any way automated.

They're also completely awful and give terrible results. I know this
one from the "negative holder" that came with my flatbed scanner ...

Re: Cheap film scanners at this time?

Flatbed scanners can be good, but only if they are of the (much more
expensive) type that has an additional light in the lid as well as under
the glass.

I must say, the amazon.co.uk reviews of the Ion scanner have put me right off:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/ION-Slides-35mm-Slide-Scanner/dp/B001DCGMR4

Way too lemony to be useful for Commons, sadly. I've asked in a few
other places about film scanners.
