That is disengenuius. To say that the Romans and we have "the same
legal concepts" of copyright is as relevant as saying that [[Galen]]
and us have the same concepts of medecine! They are our origins but
completely irrelevant to our practical discussions now.

add media wizard in testing / update

The add media Wizard is in testing see blog post:
http://metavid.org/blog/2009/03/27/add-media-wizard-and-firefogg-on-test-wikimediaorg/

If no one objects (or has any blocker bugs that I have missed) I will
add the gadget option for firefogg / add media wizard to commons
shortly. (for wider testing) We could also add the basic commons search
as a gadget for wikipedia proper. (making commons image inserts much easier)
more about add_media_wizard:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Add_Media_Wizard

The searching remote repository and in-line upload and template via url
component that is working on test.wikimedia.org is not as easy to push
out. The implementation on test.wikimedia.org is limited to files that
it can copy in less than 30 seconds (php time out ) and is parsing html
page output to determine errors. To move the add media wizard searching
and insert into production we will need to deploy the new-upload branch.
I will be targeting fixes to upload bugs 18200, 18201, 18202 to the
new-upload branch.

Looking beyond English language gadgets ... Localization is dependent
on the javascript script server which I will create a patch for core
shortly.

Re: add media wizard in testing / update

Fwd: [Wikitech-l] ANNOUNCE: OpenStreetMap maps will be added to Wikimedia projects

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason <avarab@...>

Subject: [Wikitech-l] ANNOUNCE: OpenStreetMap maps will be added to
Wikimedia projects
To: Wikimedia developers <wikitech-l@...>, OSM-Dev
Openstreetmap <dev@...>, Talk Openstreetmap
<talk@...>

There has been rapid progress on the subject of adding OpenStreetMap
maps to Wikimedia projects (e.g. Wikipedia) during the MediaWiki
Developer Meet-Up[1] taking place right now in Berlin.

We now have a clear plan of action for getting OpenStreetMap maps
embedded in Wikimedia wiki (e.g. Wikipedia) pages:

* Wikimedia will set up a database to mirror the OSM data (Planet.osm)
* Wikimedia will set up its own rendering infrastructure for rendering
tiles & other maps from the OSM data
* The existing MediaWiki extensions for displaying OSM data in a
MediaWiki article will be improved to work acceptably in production on
Wikimedia servers

To prototype all this we'll be using new infrastructure provided by
Wikimedia Deutschland[2]. Once things have been tested there they'll
eventually be deployed on the main Wikimedia sites.

After discussion with the Wikimedia operations people (including Brion
Vibber, Mark Bergsma et al) there seem to be no objections to the
above plan as long as:

Court: Congress can't put public domain back into copyright

Hello,

This will have implications for Commons too.

Yann

No since commons respects the copyright of the country of origin.

Hello Ram,

please tell us what exactly you want to donate. Images of these plants? If so,
we will gladly accept the donation, if you put the images under one of the free
licenses we accept. These licenses basically grant anyone the right to use the
image without restrictions, under the condition that the author is credited.

How many images do you have? And what kind of information about each can you
provide? Or is this not about images after all?

Regards,
Daniel
