No, actually this is a background image set using CSS. The chessboard
pattern is not part of the png (try "view image").

It wouldn't be a good idea for Wikipedias, but at least for Commons, it
is quite helpful: it allows you to see on first glance which images have
transparency where. This avoids images with a white background to be
considered redundant to ones with a transparent background, and helps
people to see which images are suitable for use on a colored background
(especially for icons) .

I feel this setup is badly needed at least for image description pages.
I also like to have it on galleries and in categories, but that may be a
matter of taste. Also, the "chessboard" could easily be turned on and
off using a bit of JS code... or of course your custom monobook.css.

Ah, that makes sense. Might be nice to have a little JavaScript link
to hide/show it, but otherwise it seems fine.

Could someone please put this "guy" back on moderation? Looks lik a spam
bot of sorts, all he seems to do is reply to messages with unrelated bits
of text to plug various books[1].

FYU : Democracy Player

There is a software called "Democracy Player" [1] which is open source
(XUL-based, like Firefox/Thunderbird), plays lots'o'video formats
(including OGM), and can handle video streams.

This might be the answer to the commons video dispute. The page also
explains how to turn web-based videos into streams that then can be
viewed via Democracy Player.

I wasn't aware that there was an ongoing 'dispute'.

How does this change our position from what we've had before? (VLC and
VLC plugin)

I wouldn't expect much, because the windows version of it is based on VLC.

Also,
"In terms of open-source, patent-unencumbered codecs like Theora, our
goal is to support them as soon as we can, and -- once open-source
media players and publishing tools get a bit more solid and
commonplace -- to nudge publishers to use them."

Implies that even though it's based on VLC, it lacks Theora support.
(Perhaps only on mac where it's based on QT? .. nope, No theora
support in the linux port, which seems to be based on xinelib, even
with theora support in xinelib.. In fact, without stealing the Windows
dlls xinelib is unable to play all the formats democracy player claims
to play, ... so much for cross platform! )

Hopefully, people will remember this the next time they want to clame

New tool - User dupes

Fulfilling a request, I added "User dupes" to my set of toys. For a
user and a wiki (wikipedia or commons), it can find uploaded files
identical in size (pixels and bytes) but different names.

New JS hack - search by namespace options on blank searches

Hello,

A while ago I realised that that Special:Search behaved differently in
different circumstances. It only shows the "search by namespace" radio
boxes on searches with search terms - not on plain old Special:Search,
or on blank searches. (I am pretty sure the blank search is still the
most common query, so this is not as stupid as it might sound.) I just
wrote this up as bugzilla:8149.

Anyway, a very nice chap, AmiDaniel, overheard my complaining on IRC
and wrote up a Javscript hack that adds the search buttons for blank
searches:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Blanksearchextra.js

(see talk page for installation instructions)

It would be good to get a variety of browsers and OSs to try it out
and report any problems they encounter. (see talk page) I would like
to install it site-wide until the bug is fixed (which is more a matter
of someone getting around to it rather than something difficult, I
imagine, but IANAD).

regards,
Brianna

Re: New tool - User dupes

Great tool!
Is there a way to make it cross wiki, so to find commons duplicates on a local wiki, that are not under the same name, and not from the same user?
