Equipment pool

I don't think that Wikimedia New England is at a stage right now, either financially or organizationally, where having an equipment pool makes a tremendous amount of sense, but if there ever was an argument for having one I think it was made over the past few days by Albin Olsson (user:Abbedabb at commons)[1], who covered this year's Eurovision contest using a Nikon D600 from the equipment pool of Wikimedia Sverige, producing just over 500 photographs and film clips from the event.[2]

Just something to keep in mind for the future, since it would be awesome to have this kind of thing for events that take place in Boston/New England.

Sven

Wiknic signup page

Although history has shown that a) most people that sign up for Wikipedia-related events in Boston don't actually show up to those events, and b) most people that show up to Wikipedia-related events in Boston never actually signed up, I none the less feel that it might be a good idea to pass along the link to the on-Wiki event sign up page. It also has directions for where everyone is going to meet.

Kudos to Keven for setting everything up,

Sven

Wiknic approaches!

Compatriots! The Great American Wiknic [1] approaches. Some questions:

1) Is anyone interested in attending?
2) Is the Boston Commons (where it took place last year) still a good idea for a location?
3) If enough people express an interest in having a Wiknic in Boston, what other mailing lists should we let know about the event?

Cheers,
Sven

Fwd: [dpla-tech] New DPLA API released

Dear Wikipedians and open library enthusiasts,

The API to access and play with the DPLA metadata stores has been
released. You can get an API key and test it out (see below, and
https://github.com/dpla ).

If you're interested you can follow the technical discussion on the

Probably simple enough to repeat here:

  curl -v -XPOST http://api.dp.la/v2/api_key/you <at> your_email.com

If you use Gmail, check your spam folder. The key is sent immediately.

Women's History Edit-a-thon <at> Harvard, March 29th!

Hey everyone,

Just announcing another Boston-area edit-a-thon that will be taking place on Friday, March 29th at Harvard University's Berkman Center for Internet and Society... As it is Women's History Month, we will be focusing our efforts on editing and adding to articles on notable women. The event is one of a bunch being held around the world in conjunction with WikiWomen's History Month, a project to increase female participation and representation on Wikipedia. As such, we strongly encourage female editors to attend! All experience levels welcome.

Full details, including RSVP information, can be found on our event page:

Hackathon/Editathon on April 6th in Boston

Details here: http://www.meetup.com/wikipedia-5/events/109596252/

Bocoup is hosting a Wikipedia editathon/hackathon from 10AM to 5PM on the 6th of April. On the edit side of things we'd love to focus on improving wikipedia's coverage of open web technologies (notable libraries, languages, design patterns, etc.) but we're happy to have anyone come and contribute on an article they're interested in improving.

The hackathon side is completely open. We people to get excited about contributing to Wikimedia projects technically but we're also looking forward to see cool things get done to user scripts/styles, the API and data derived from Wikipedia.

I'm going to add a page on Wikipedia proper soon enough. The details there should basically mirror those on Meetup.com. Please email me (or leave a note on my talk page) with any questions.

Thanks,
-Adam

meet in Boston next month?

Hi wikimedians,

We've had good turnout at the last few monthly meetups, but we've been missing some of the folks who live on the Boston side of the Charles. We've talked periodically about alternating between Boston and Cambridge. I'd like to propose that we meet in Boston next month. Please chime in and let us know if this would make you more or less likely to come.

One possibility is encuentro5, which is right near Park Street Station/Downtown Crossing. However, please let us know if you have an alternative idea. Perhaps someplace close to Northeastern?

Best,
Gabe

Boston City Archives

Hello, Wikimedians in Boston!

This Participation Support request from a User who works with the Boston City Archives is to attend the upcoming Open GLAM Launch in Berkeley: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Participation:BostonCityArchives/US_OpenGLAM_Launch_Weekend.

Before making a decision about whether or not to fund the request, we wanted to gauge the interest of some local Wikimedians in working with the Boston City Archives. Does anyone have experience working with the archives, or is anyone interested in getting involved with their work releasing their digitized images on commons, or does anyone have other information that might be useful to us as we're considering the request?

By the way, for those of you who may not have heard much about the Participation Support Program, it is a reimbursement program that funds the travel costs of contributors who are participating in events such as meetings and conferences. It doesn't fund participation in Wikimedia-movement-organized events such as Wikimania or events organized by local chapters - requests for scholarships to attend those events should still go through the event organizers (who are welcome to apply for a grant through the WMF Grants Program: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Index). To learn more about the program and see some examples of successful requests, please visit http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Participation:Support or write to us at participation-AeOJrEpdGNeGglJvpFV4uA@public.gmane.org at any time.

Thank you, and best regards!

Winifred

Wikipedia intro/edit-a-thon/meetup at HubSpot on March 9

Hello Boston folk!

HubSpot, a Cambridge based software company, will host a Wikipedia event on Saturday March 9, from
10am-3pm. Including:
* Intro session (that's me :)
* lunch
* open edit-a-thon
* meetup

Sign up on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston/HubSpot
Or on meetup.com: http://www.meetup.com/wikipedia-5/events/105910342/

I hope to see you guys there! I emailed about this last month, and hoped to do an "everybody wins" combination
event with the monthly meetup. However I see that a few people have signed up for that one on Meetup.com, on
Monday, March 11. Hopefully it's not too late to combine forces? Let me know if there's anything I can do to help!

-Pete
