--- Objectives ---

"The original Scientific American article on the Semantic Web appeared
in 2001. It described the evolution of a Web that consisted largely of
documents for humans to read to one that included data and inforation
for computers to manipulate. The Semantic Web is a Web of actionable
information derived from data through a semantic theory for
interpreting the symbols. The semantic theory provides an account of
meaning in which the logical connection of terms establishes
interoperability between systems. This simple idea, however, remains
largely unrealized." (Nigel Shadbolt, Wendy Hall, Tim Berners-Lee

I like the RDFa idea a lot. Btw, there would be a question as to the
namespace of the rdfa attributes if it
were to work with atom.

Though that makes sense in a way, my feeling is that an atom:Entry is
an information object,
and so is owl:disjointWith a foaf:Person . I would argue this by
looking at the main use case for atom: the Atom Protocol. Atom entries

RIF Last Call

The W3C Rule Interchange Format (RIF) Working Group this week
published "Last Call" drafts of two of its specifications:

   - "RIF Basic Logic Dialect" (BLD) specifies an XML format for rules
at an intermediate expressive power. The language is roughly
Horn rules with URIs, datatypes, and builtins. This goes beyond
datalog (it has function terms), it but does not provide any kind
of negation. (Various forms of negation, and other features,
are expected to be provided by dialects which extend BLD, to be
     published in the future.)
     http://www.w3.org/TR/rif-bld/

   - "RIF RDF and OWL Compatibility" explains and specifies how RIF
rulesets are to be used in combination with RDF and OWL.
     http://www.w3.org/TR/rif-rdf-owl/

LAST CALL IS THE KEY TIME FOR EXTERNAL REVIEW. The designs are
essentially complete (the Working Group believes the design work is
done), but things can still be changed in response to external input.
Additionally, input on editorial issues (especially pointing out
ambiguities) is always welcome.

In addition to these Last Call documents, the Working Group has
published four other drafts:

   - RIF Production Rule Dialect (PRD) specifies an XML format for the
exchange of production rules. PRD and BLD are expected to be the
basis of the two main dialect-branches, with RIF Core being the
things in common between the two. (We have not yet published a

**ABOUT ESTC2008

ESTC2008 is Europe's most prominent and authoritative conference focusing on the growth of the ICT
semantic technology markets, highlighted by showcased industry practices, advancements in the field
of semantic technologies achieved in the past year, and successful marketing strategies in delivering
semantic applications that generate new revenues. While chasing to catch up, the large number of
industrial attendees will provide a solid foundation for the long anticipated opportunity for semantic
technologies to officially disseminate beyond the academic world.

Participants will learn how to develop a cohesive strategy for managing semantic technology initiatives
and utilizing these to evolve the operations and effectiveness of their organizations. Additionally,
ESTC2008 provides the invaluable opportunity for you to meet your fellow peers or rub shoulders with some
of the ICT industry's major players.

ESTC2008 will not only contribute to exploiting the most mature semantic tools and technologies; further
research results will be presented promoting the continued R&D of semantic technologies as they evolve
into a fundamental backbone of ICT. This year's ESTC takes another step in bridging the broad knowledge
transfer gap with demonstrations and industrial exhibitions of pragmatic, functional, and fully
deployable applications that prove the progressing marketable value of semantic technologies.

Spatial ontology for geographic information

Hello,

ISO/TC 211 (http://www.isotc211.org/) is the ISO technical committe responsible for the development of international standards in geographic information. As part of the standardization work, a comprehensive set of geospatial concepts has been developed in UML for the description of spatial data, temporal data, metadata, geographic feature, and more.

Under this technical committee, I am leading a project team (PT19150) which has the mandate to conduct a study about the use of ontologies and Semantic Web for the pupose on interoperability of geographic information. As part of this study, we are investigating the derivation of OWL ontologies from the ISO/TC 211 UML models which would provide an in depth and standard vocabulary for the description of geographic information for the Semantic Web. These ontologies would support Semantic Web applications and services dealing with geographic information and would be a fundamental resource to integrate of associate Web information dealing with a geographic component. Ongoing discussions in the project team and in the technical committee are very optimistic at the moment. I find it important to share this perspective with the Semantic Web community and those of you who have interest and comments about this activity are invited to share it to get a better understanding of the needs for such an ontology. The project team will submit a draft report to ISO/TC 211 this year for agreement and further processing. I will keep this comminity informed of further developments regarding this subject.

Sincerely,
__

RE: [Ann] Triplify 0.4

If the data is not secret, it might be best if we had a look at loading it
ourselves with different configurations.
We have some of pubmed etc from Banff already, so please say what data it
would be.

Subject: [Ann] Triplify 0.4

Hi all,

we just release version 0.4 of the Triplify script. After the initial
release several months ago we made quite some additions and bug fixes
the most important of which are:

  * *update log functionality* added - allows Semantic Web crawlers to
    get incremental updates, see
       <http://triplify.org/vocabulary/update>
  * linked data publication now also works without Apache's mod_rewrite
  * Syntax for indicating objectProperties added, e.g.:
      SELECT id,user_id 'sioc:has_creator->user'
  * Additional metadata can now be added via $triplify['metadata']
  * The configuration variable $triplify['CallbackFunctions'] allows
programmatic post processing of DB content

Thanks to everybody contributing bug fixes or comments (especially
Sebastian Hellmann, Danh Le Phuoc, Rolf Strathewerd, Elias Theodorou).

On behalf of the AKSW team [1]

Orri, Triplify itself is rather a software than data. Triplify allows to
publish relational databases as Linked Data with minimal effort.
A list of some "triplified" data sources can be obtained from:

<http://triplify.org/Registry>

But these are mostly 3rd party contributions.

Hope that helps,

Sören

Soren,

I think you simply need to tell Orri that Triplify is a PHP based
mechanism for RDF Views (or Semantic Covers) over Relational (typical
MySQL) based data :-) In a nutshell, another mechanism for RDBM to RDF
[1] along the lines of:

1. Virtuoso's SPASQL based Meta Schema Language for ODBC or JDBC
accessible data sources (in addition to Native Virtuoso)
2. D2RQ's N3 based mapping language for JDBC data sources

Re: Spatial ontology for geographic information

Bonjour Jean

I would be very happy to investigate interoperability of ISO/TC 211
models with Geonames ontology, currently under revision
(http://www.geonames.org/ontology).
Geonames is more and more used as a reference data set for Semantic Web
Linked Data applications (http://linkeddata.org).

Unfortunately, ISO has not had so far any policy of open publication of
schemas on the Web, although the Semantic Web needs stable and reliable
URIs for many things codified by ISO, say for examples countries and
languages. Geonames publishes URIs for countries, URIs for languages are
published at http://www.lingvoj.org, and DBpedia has URIs for both
countries and languages. But one would hope that at some point ISO
itself publishes URIs for such codes in its own namespace ...

A first step in "sharing with the Semantic Web" would be to have those
schemas you are speaking about freely available on the Web. :-)
Do you intend to have whatever ontologies developed in your project
framework schemas deployed on the Web following Semantic Web open
publication practices, or as usual ISO publication (pay for download
documents)?
