PyOhio FTW

PyOhio was a mind expanding experience. Highly recommended.

Somehow I won the grand door prize, a full multi-OS, single user, Wing
Pro license. I already have a full Wing Pro license. So at the next
TriZPUG meeting, some lucky person is going to win this as a door prize.
It's worth $245. I would save it for PyCarolinas, but the download code
expires on Sept 15, so I gotta give it away sooner. Chris Fox is
reserving us a room for our August meeting at NCSU now. So save the date
Thur Aug 23 at 7pm for your chance to win.

PyOhio also shares their love by donating their large cache of name tags
ribbons (the ones that say "speaker," "sponsor," "volunteer," etc.) to
PyCarolinas. Calvin, I will hand them over to you the next time I see
you. The tags were given to PyOhio by PyCon US, so the gift keeps on giving.

The PyOhio board met on Sunday and tapped PyCamp to provide a week of
Python instruction leading up to PyOhio 2013. PyCamp will be July 22-26,
2013 and PyOhio will be July 27-28, both at the shiney new Ohio State Union.

The sprints were excellent. Catherine Devlin concentrated the sprints on
minting as many new Python cor devs as possible. Her help was fantastic
and somehow I managed to submit a patch for filecmp.

The best part wasn't even surprising. The best part was, of course, the
lightning talks. Chad Whitacre is not only a Python rockstar, he's got
to be the funniest person to ever give a lightning talk (OK, maybe
second to Ian Bicking's old ZDjangoGears talk). Anyway, you should
support Chad's https://www.gittip.com/ .

I'd like to report to you on Chad's talk on Aspen, his super-duper WSGI
(Continue reading)

Re: PyOhio FTW (and Salt)

Thank you, Chris!   A detailed, focused and very interesting report.  I didn't attend, and I now feel that I could actually take away a lot of good stuff from this conference.

Very much appreciated!

P.S.  anyone doing serious work with Salt -- Python deployment technology?   Would like to talk to you Wednesday... (Caktus sponsored project night)

I've also registered <at> triangleforged and triangleforged.org if running

Re: Triangle Built?

I like the "triangle forged" name also.

If this is intended to be a marketing tool, I'd expect a more polished and snappy logo.

That's my main message. I have some small ideas that I'd explore with a designer if I were running with it,
too, but they are discardable. Here they are, for what it is worth.

I expect something in the image to reflect the "triangle" aspect of the name. One direction is a forged metal
triangle, of the sort used as a percussion instrument. Another is that the forge can clearly have the shape
of a triangle, on the top slab.

Hopefully that's helpful feedback.

Re: Triangle Built?

Hi all, sorry this had to be my first posting to the list, but I figured I'd provoke some more direct inspiration.

I just wanted to chime in and say that this is my favorite of all the designs I've seen posted. Now for the inspiration...

First off, I would suggest sticking with the anvil rather than incorporating a musical triangle into the design. The Triangle is a location, and has little to do with the purpose of the Triangle Python community, which as I see it is indeed to "forge" things with computers. Also, how would you design a logo around a musical triangle that relates to a Python usergroup? The most resonating mental image I can associate with a musical triangle is dinner time on the farm.

Secondly, drop the Arial typeface. This is a proprietary typeface owned by Monotype Imaging, and it's a shabby knockoff of Helvetica (also owned by Monotype Imaging). I would recommend finding a typeface that is both beautiful and open sourced. Cabin could be a good humanist sans alternative.

Thirdly, I would recommend figuring out a way to make the kerning look better. Here is a game that teaches you how to do that. Additionally, it appears as though the word TRIANGLE is smaller than the word FORGED. Maybe eliminating the black border, and making the anvil smaller would help out with the kerning aspect.

Finally, some cool (but slight) text effects could be used to give this logo a more polished feel. Maybe something that looks like it is made from hot metal

I also think that the background color is too dark in comparison to the black text, and would recommend using a different color such as #ff4500. That is all bound to change once hot metal text effects are added, so for now I would worry about color last once the other stuff is taken into consideration.

Re: Triangle Built?

Hey Jesse, did you see my update to his design?  I don't think the triangle looks bad.  I also did not use arial so I am assuming not, I used two open source font from dafont.  I also know this is a python user group but I assume most of us use plenty of languages... I could add a python coming up out of the triangle but usually you don't want complicated bits in a logo.  I can see what I can whip up later.  I provided the .psd file along w/ my last email.  I think the easiest way to make suggestions is to try to edit the logo even if you can't get the full affect.

I've also registered <at> triangleforged and triangleforged.org if running
with this name, which I like quite a bit.

I'm really liking "Triangle Forged" and I've got my ideas sketched up
but need to put them up digitally, this evening.

Re: Triangle Built?

I like this even better than my own. I was going to send it out but
after seeing this have decided otherwise.

I do like the idea and I'd like to vote for the anvil instead of a
musical triangle.
