Head First Programming

I first heard about this book from Joel Burton over two years ago. It
was finally released today. Amazon has it for a dollar less than the
O'Reilly user group discount price, and with free shipping:

http://www.amazon.com/Head-First-Programming-Learners-Language/dp/0596802374

Head First Programming is a book for people who aren't just new to
Python, but new to programming. And it's written in Python 3.

On the one hand, it seems to assume that you already have Python 3
installed on your machine and that you know how to fire up IDLE.

On the other hand, it says in the intro that the book is *not* for you
if 1) you already know how to program or 2) are looking for a quick
Python introduction or reference book.

If you are trying to teach someone completely new to programming, this
book might help. It seems to really assume the reader knows nothing
about programming. However, be aware that it does carry some warts
common to teaching Python, like the use of the word "variable."

It also uses the "you already know how to read Python" approach to
explaining Python code, too, if you like that approach.

Django development sprint in the Triangle, Dec 12-13

Hi All,

Just wanted to let you know that we'll be hosting a local Django Development sprint in the Triangle area of North Carolina next weekend (Dec 12 and 13).  A development sprint is an excuse to get together, write some code, and have a good time doing it.  The purpose of this sprint will be to help finish features and push out bug fixes in preparation for the Django 1.2 release.  If you're interested in coming to work on other open source Django-based projects, that's welcome too.

We'll be meeting in Carrboro Creative Coworking (205 Lloyd St, Carrboro, NC 27510) and we'll be there to open the doors at 9am both days.

For more information, please check out the corresponding wiki page and RSVP via Eventbrite if you're interested:

http://code.djangoproject.com/wiki/Sprint200912TriangleNC

http://django-triangle-dec-09.eventbrite.com/

We have a couple sponsors so far, but there's still room for more, so check out the sponsors section of the wiki and add yourself (or your company) if you'd like to bring something.

Hope to see you there!

Cheers,
Tobias

Yeah, there's no punch allowed in the North Pavilion, so that'd be great if it was the case else where. I don't need to have the lock on Duke locations if Ben or Robert would like to host, but I'd like to keep Duke in the rotation.

Has a location been set for a special Christmas TriZPUG meeting? We could meet at The Federal where I believe they have several varieties of punch on tap if that's desired. I haven't been but I know that's the spot for the after-meeting meeting in Durham :)

I'd love to hear about the Djanjo sprint that will have happened the week prior.

Have a nice day,

Mike

Re: December Meeting

I'd been talking to CC about hosting the Holiday meeting at the
Nicholas School at Duke again- tho' just yesterday, my group scheduled
a last minute meeting at Rutgers, so there's a good chance I'll be out
of town now. If there's another location, it might be better to go
with that.

Yeah, I put a placeholder announcement up here a couple of weeks ago:

http://trizpug.org/

Bendy said he could host at Nicholas school in a conference room.

Still waiting to hear the room number from Bendy.

I'd think that would be a good possibility. :)

Ouch.

OK. I'm checking on some alternate locations now.

Thanks for the heads up.

TriZPUG December 2009 Holiday Party: Lightning Talks and You!

It turns out that Bendy can host our meeting at Duke after all.

So here's the announcement:

http://trizpug.org/Members/bendy/dec-09-mtg/

We will have a lot of food and beverage, plus at least six
*substantial* door prizes.

Unless someone steps forward with a feature presentation, this holiday
party/meeting will be all about your lightning talks. Please think of
something you learned about Python recently that you can show and tell
about in five minutes or less. Some of the door prizes are going to be
linked to best lightning talks. Or maybe you might need to give a
lightning talk to get in on the door prize action. Either way, I'm
sure there is *something* you learned in the month or so that is
worth sharing.

You might plan to arrive a little early to deal with the parking
situation and the confusing hallways of the meeting location.

Map: http://map.duke.edu/?x=355.06&y=-360.22&z=5&w=835&h=600&new.x=474&new.y=271

If you arrive late and can't get in the door, call 358-2662 or
613-8021x7.
