steam, this is off the first monthly installment so after that it's
back up to full price but if you've been thinking about getting a full
account then this looks like a good deal.

it appears to be a very short term offer, looks like less than a day left

hope this is of interest

O'Reilly UG Membership

Hello All,

If you hadn't heard it from me before, we're now members of O'Reilly's User Group Programme. For the 'price'
of having a banner upon the website, we get a few benefits. Whilst I haven't been sent the welcome pack yet,
this is what I've so far been told.

    • 35% Discount off of all O'Reilly books. (this is print only, using the UK store). Code "OR111".

    • Donations of Books and Other Promo items (we'll see what happens on this front. Using it as a prize for a
competition would be a nice idea).

    • Possibilities of talks by O'Reilly authors. (If there's anyone you'd like, I'll ask and see what I can do).

    • Review copies of books. If you'd like to write a review, a copy of a book can be arranged to be sent to me.
They request that reviews are posted either on the site, or in a newsletter (and any other possible
places). Similarly, give me a shout on this one.

They also send me a newsletter each month; you can view this months here: http://connect.oreilly.co.uk/oreillyuklz//lz.aspx?p1=056982S93&CC=&p=1&cID=0&cValue=1

Give me a shout if any of the above are useful to you. Similarly, suggest possible speakers and I will try to
chase them.

Nick.

George Orwell’s Blog: Now Things Get Interesting | The Loom

Discover Blogs

Two years ago I noted that George Orwell had started a blog. Or, rather, Orwell’s diaries began to be posted, day by day, online. I liked the idea at first, but after a while I drifted away. The initial entries came from a relatively quiet time in Orwell’s life, dealing with stuff like how many eggs he got from his chickens on a given day.

But there’s nothing like a war to make life all too interesting:

It is impossible even yet to decide what to do in the case of German conquest of England. The one thing I will not do is to clear out, at any rate not further than Ireland, supposing that to be feasible. If the fleet is intact and it appears that the war is to be continued from America and the Dominions, then one must remain alive if possible, if necessary in the concentration camp. If the U.S.A is going to submit to conquest as well, there is nothing for it but to die fighting, but one must above all die fighting and have the satisfaction of killing somebody else first.

Doctor Who Crack Appears in Space

[Geeks Are Sexy] Technology News

Well, the crack didn’t really just appear in space; it’s an image from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope from several years ago. It was notable at the time for looking like a snake slithering across the Milky Way, but the crack is actually a “core of a thick, sooty cloud large enough to swallow dozens of solar systems.”

But then last week an astronomy blog posted the image as its picture of the day, again finding it interesting for being a “ghost snake.” However, some Doctor Who fans saw the image and were reminded of something else: a crack (warning: spoilers!) in the fabric of time and space that’s been a focal point of the new season of the show.

Luckily the snake/crack/solar-system-swallowing cloud is 11,000 light years away, in the constellation Sagittarius. So we’re probably safe.

BBC3 Investigates Psychic Surgeon Gary Mannion

This looks epic!

Skepchick

A skeptical look at 20-year old channeler and “healer,” Gary Mannion. They film at a Skeptics in the Pub meetup, reference the JREF forum (but with no link mentioned), and interview Richard Sutherland of BadSkeptics.com. The Bad Skeptics accuse Gary of giving out medical advice, but he says he isn’t because he isn’t forcing anyone to take his advice. Um, that’s not the definition of “giving out medical advice,” Gary.

Part 3 features a psychic stripper.

Also in Part 3 is seasoned pendulum reader Andreas, who engages in this conversation with filmmaker Emeka Onono:

“The pendulum knows everything.”

“Is my grandmother’s name Anna?”

“My pendulum says yes.”

“Well her name’s Mary.”

“Oh. Shit.”

Turns out Mary was just reincarnated, dummies!

Subject: Tips for essential computer protection

Hi Philip,

I hope you’re well.

I handle the PR for AVG, producers of the world’s leading Free antivirus software.  I wanted to get in touch with you as I noticed on your blog that you have written in the past about the frustration over receiving spam and junk mail.  With more and more ‘junk’ being sent to email addresses the risk for malicious attacks can deepen.  Gmail account holders were targeted with a phishing attack just this morning, which left many people unknowingly handing over their personal data!

AVG has put together some useful tips to help people understand the various threats that can lurk online and the relevant protection that you need in order to protect yourself from it – please see attached.  I was wondering whether it might be of interest for your blog and your readers, who maybe experiencing similar frustrations.

If you’d like to get more information around this or would like to potentially interview / speak to an AVG spokesperson about online security then please do let me know as I’d be happy to set this up for you.

All the best

Delilah

Boxes for Moving

Even' all.

People wouldn't happen to have some boxes Georgie and I could use for moving, would they?

Or some big plastic boxes that we could borrow for a week or so?
