grub and distro questions

Hello All,
Seems like a long time ago that I posted to the group. I've been buried in
books and essays the past few months.

Anyway, I have a new computer and have partitioned the HDD. I have
Slackware 10.0 on one partition and just installed knoppix on another. I
allowed the knoppix installer to write Grub to the MBR (I don't think it
actually gave me a choice). This was no drama as I had added slack to grub
in the past with no problems.

I have tried a few Grub configurations but have not got it to work. My
last try resulted in Slack staring to boot but failing in a kernel panic.
Here's my Grub menu.lst:

title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.11 Default

grub and distro questions

Yep in the last few days I have been playing with this as a way to be
able to ssh to my servers off my users desktops from a linux distro.
That way I don't have to install any extra programs like putty on the
users workstation. Incredibly it works very well. I also chose to stick
all the files on the root of the stick and then i used syslinux.exe to
install a boot sector to the stick. So now I can boot from the stick asa
well as run it in the emulator within windows. Changing from different
Kbd and mouse and xwindow settings when either booting from the stick or
using the emulator, isn't particularly smooth though. I have been trying
to figure out the boot scripts to see how I can get the X environment
from being loaded and instaed run the xsetup.sh script prior to xwindows
starting up. That way I can deal with the many different workstations
that i come across.

If I could use Alt-F1 or Ctrl-Alt-F1 etc in the emulator to access
virtual terminals I could just kill the xsession, but that only seems to
work when booting off the stick. Any tips with this would be much
appreciated.

	Regards, Geoff

I saw a cheapy initio a100u2w for sale for about $70 dollars on everything
Linux. So I got that and compiled the module (Redhat ES 3 doesn't have it
compiled by default) and I can finally get the status of the tape drive
without any problems. I've still got problems with my backups though, so
now I have to see if the tapes are getting too old or if the tape drive is
dodgy. Thanks for the suggestions people.

Meeting this Friday night

At this point no-one has volunteered to arrange the venue for us - that
is, pick up the key or whatever has to happen before Computerbank closes
for the day.

Additionally, I can no longer make the meeting myself due to family
commitments. I was planning on looking at Ubuntu (I have the CDs) plus
some live CDs for comparison purposes.

No-one has volunteered to do talks for the last couple of months,
either.

Anyway, I might suggest that we cancel this month's meeting unless a
dedicated bunch still want to get together just to chat about Linux
stuff. If this is the case, we still need someone to be able to work out
the venue.

Andrew Laird.
