Re: Need a pc....

Hi, Wayne;

It might be better to build one yourself, Or find a
2nd hand one (one of those Computer SWAP Meets might
be?)

Cheers,
Paul

For a bit of fun...!!

Hey People..

Just a bit of light-hearted fun for you all..

I need a name for my firewall pc.

It's a p166 with adsl about to be connected to it.

My brain is shot after an alcoholic weekend.

Wayne.,
Your mouse has moved. Windows NT must be
restarted for the change to take effect.

             Reboot now?

WARNING:Windows installation detected! This
        will void your warranty.
Do you want to continue? [Y/N]

Microsoft announced today that the official
release date for the new operating system
"Windows 2000" will be delayed until the
       second quarter of 1901.

Re: For a bit of fun...!!

I usually go with exotic city names ... budapest, kathmandu, istanbul ... of
course after having travelled to Nepal, I found that Kathmandu was more
'rustic' in its charm :)

Of course if you get really stuck ... p166 is always good :)

For me, At home Machines are named after Ancient Deities: Ra, An, Enki
etc.. At work, i've got 'Household Appliances: Toaster, freezer, Oven
(cd-burner), firewall is called 'Gate' internally :-)

also, when lost for inspiration, I do a verbose traceroute across the
world, you generally see some goodies.

linux, also has anyone played with firewire yet, my new digital video

trees: oak, pine, teak, gum
fish: trout, carp, shark, parrot,
colours: red, green, blue, black,
cars: falcon, astra, astina, benz, merc, alfa

Testing - Feel free to ignore :)

Just changed some code in MailMan, the list managment software, and need
to test. Can't be bothered setting up another list :)

Re: For a bit of fun...!!

I like Picard and Marcus, and so on...

Picard is a authentication server, kinda commander ;-) and Marcus is a email
server....

From Startrek and Babylon 5... Marcus was one of the first rangers.. and
acted like a messanger...

the masqerading box I have where I live is called Kelso, after the street I
live in....

A firewall... I like whitestar... (also from B5) They where guards
sometimes... (too long since last time I whatched it ;-( )

You could also call it peter, paul, marcus, whatever... or Julie ;-) And
have a personal relation ship with it... it's sader when they die though :-(

Sorry for my bad english ;-)

Magnus

PS: sorry rob, I sent it to you directly by accident ;-/

I like to use homeopathic principles, & give them names that reflect
qualities that I *don't* want them to have. For example, at one
employer, I named all the systems after mental illnesses, such as
paranoia, schizo, manic, etc. Other schemes I like use names like BSOD,
crash, coredump, guru, etc. This principle seems to work, because all
the systems that I've named in this manner seem to be exceptionally
stable. ;)

For a firewall (or any other machine dedicated to security functions), I
would use 'Paranoia' or 'Psycho'.

BTW, a really good time to come up with naming schemes is while down the
pub with friends who are also from the computer industry. Don't forget
to take a notepad or Palmpilot or whatever, or you'll forget all the
good names when you sober up. ;)
