ghost with linux

I have been playing around with making ghost images as backups for my linux
boxes and it seems to work pretty well, my question is more to see if
someone know anymore about this that I do. Does anyone know way to dump
and image across the network without having to down the linux box and boot
up off a dos floppy with the ghost stuff on it??

Re: ghost with linux

Chris,

I've been wanting to do this for a while myself. Many systems don't
require nightly back ups but do require to be backed up after changes.
Things like firewalls and the likes.

I have tried (only briefly) dd'ing /dev/sda to cdrom (with tools in the
middle of course) but didn't get much success.

But, there the way you're talking about doing it looks to be more along
the lines of NFS root mounting.

ie:

1) system boots off a very small partition whihch contains the kernel
(basically /boot/*)
2) the system then NFS mounts something like GHOSTBOX:/images/machineX
and copies down /, /var, /tmp, /usr, /home, etc which have been 'ghosted'
previously.

Not sure if this is along the same lines of what you talk about below ?

Regards

adam

Donation suggestions (for SuSE 6.3 stock)

Hi All,

Since we import SuSE linux from Germany, we have some left
over and we want to donate it somewhere.

The SuSE stock is Version 6.3, there's close to 30 boxes
left, which we are not allowed to sell since SuSE is
crediting us with the value of them on our next order.

We have a choice as to destroying the stock or donating it,
and we'd prefer to donate it.

So, I am looking for suggestions of places we can donate
them to. We want them to go somewhere that they will be
used, not just shoved in the corner and left to gather
dust. The current version of SuSE is 6.4, but there is
another release just around the corner.

Any suggestions?

Regards,
Robert Davidson.

hehe.. I'll talk to my boss about this, because it seems that some
people (3 already) want a copy for themselves.. I doubt he'll go for
it though because he was looking for suggestions for like schools,
organizations, etc..

Robert Davidson.

About Me

Hi All

I still have a bit of a hangup with Linux! Its so versatile that its
brilliant, but through its very versatility it makes the OS very complex
and therefore hard to set up.

Even though I have gone from RH 5.0, 6.0, 6.1 I still have major
problems with networking. My latest was when I was updating a
pre-release version of Windows 98 to the current version, it blew away
the MBR and I lost access to Linux. My bootdisk/recovery floppies did
not work (missing some files) so I did a clean install. And now do you
think I can get the LAN working? Not on your sweet nellie!

So, once I have become a list member I will be picking your collective
brains as to how the hell make this machine stop being anti-social!

Look forward to making your various acquaintenances!

Roger

Linux Standard Base web site

Hi

Someone on this list asked me about the LSB web site. Unfortunatly I
succeeded in deleting the mail before I replied to it - my apologies!

So, for you and anyone else that is interested, the LSB web site is at
