When's WUGLUGLAN?

Greetings All,

There was some talk earlier this week of having a WUGLUG event with
some talks at the LAN, but I don't think it made it onto this list.

I believe the latest suggestion was to use the second LAN room on
Friday evening (~22:00) and have a few lightning (~5min) talks. I'm
happy to prepare one if people are interested, I think Mulletron was
too.

Who is interested in attending, or giving a talk? There's no point if
no-one will be there. Would people prefer another time? (Bear in mind
that people will be tired if you leave it till late in the LAN.

[Cross-posting to wuglug]

Coventry does have two universities.

I'm sure that WUGLUG could find you rooms for technical meetings on
fairly short notice. This isn't quite as centrally-located as Coventry
University, but might work until you find somewhere else.

Regards,

Linux & Computer Forensics talk, 18th Nov.

There is a talk at CovLUG on *Linux and Computer Forensics* coming up
soon on Tuesday 18th November which may be of additional interest and
hence I thought it worth mentioning.

The talk is being given by a police officer who works in the computer
forensics team and is a member of Coventry Linux User Group.

It starts at 7pm in the Hillman/Humber Lecture Theatres of Coventry
University, the location is indicated on this map:
http://openstreetmap.org/index.html?mlat=52.40802&mlon=-1.50426&zoom=17

Some details about the talk can be found here:
http://www.covlug.org.uk/index.php?n=Members.Meetings

and more general details here:
http://www.covlug.org.uk/

There will be a social after the meeting with some food and beverage at
Pasta Hut (ex Pizza Hut).

FSF groups page

Hi all,

I don't know who the current person responsible for advocacy is, but it
might be worth adding WUGLUG to this wiki:

http://groups.fsf.org/

It was mentioned in a recent email to FSF members.

Meeting

Evening all.

After the talks given at the last two weeks there should be some kind
of installfest/informal meeting at this weeks linux user group
meeting.

I think Brad will be bringing along a trial version of a wuglug
livedvd to test out. If you have any particular distro you've tried
and failed at then feel free to bring along.

Due to the nature of the event it'll be advisable to bring along
laptops - though if you don't own/want to bring one along then we are
happy to see you anyway, since I'm sure it'll be a more
informal/social event than the first 2 weeks lug meetings.

As ever - held in A0.23 at 6.30pm on Wednesday. If you don't know
where A0.23 is, then the campus map may be of service [0].

Meeting

Dear all,

After last week's unfortunate cancellation, LUG meetings will be
continuing as usual on Wednesdays. We will be giving out the prizes
from last term's programming competition at approximately 6.30pm. Monk
will be giving us his (now highly anticipated) talk comparing
different desktop environments and window managers at 6.45pm. The
meeting is held in A0.23, which is part of the business school complex
- if you don't know where that is then people will be leaving the
Department of Computer Science at 6.10.

Cancelling my talk for tonight

Apologies to anyone planning on attending my talk tonight - due to my
generally poor organisational skills, I am going to have to postpone
it. Sorry for the last minute nature of this.

I would, however, be happy to do the talk next week.

Regards,
Tim Monks

New wiki authentication system

As many of you may know, our wiki has been under bombardment from spammers
for quite some time now, making it pretty much unmaintainable due to the
shear amount of spam. In the past I have attempted to stop this by
enforcing user accounts, but this was ineffective due to the way user
account creation works on moinmoin. Fortunately moinmoin has a /very/
flexible configuration, so I have solved this issue by creating a custom
authentication system.

It now works but using the website database, meaning we can disable
account creation altogether, hence stopping the spam altogether. So to
login now you simply use you website username (unicode) and password.

Unfortunately because of this I've had to remove all the old user
accounts, so any preferences you may have had, have been lost (the few that
there were), but if you /really/ want to retain your settings without
having to set them again, then just contact the techteam list and this can
be done for you.

I have also gone through the whole wiki and removed all the spam I could
find, but there may still be some left, if you ever find any, please
remove it or revert the page as appropriate :)

So, welcome to the new spammer free wiki!

Note: This also includes the WUGLUG site, as this is part of the same wiki.

Regards,
Bradley Smith
