Re: Introduction

Hi Baguio Linux/FOSS guys!

I will be in Baguio from May 11-14 and would be happy to meet up with
you for some coffee and talk one late afternoon, maybe on the 13th,
somewhere along or near Session Road. Recommendations as to where to
meet are most welcome.

We can talk shop/tech, but the main objective of a meetup like this is
to get to know one another. I've met one or two of you before, I'm
sure. Let's get a core of a few people up there to stir things up a
bit more, or at least catalyze a small community of FOSS there.

Most of all, I would be delighted to match faces to all those familiar
names (and new ones) on the mailing list. The tendency for us to lock
ourselves away in isolated rooms with our computers is strong, so
going out to meet with other like minded people is good for us.

See you in Baguio!

Are commercial databases worth it?

Apropos of a recent discussion thread, I thought this article was
fairly balanced:

worth-it

Sans intentions of stirring a hornet's nest,

Re: Are commercial databases worth it?

Most of the comments there come from people who haven't the slightest
clue about the features of commercial databases.

Best comment on that article:

The trouble with most developers is that they've simply never dealt
with situations that required the more esoteric features of a
commercial DB.

The trouble with most developers who have required those esoteric
features is that once you've used the death star, everything looks
like a planet.

But I have to ask the folks on this list (particularly the MySQL and
PostgreSQL advocates): would you deposit your money in a bank which
uses MySQL or PostgreSQL for their core banking system?

Re: Introduction

Hi Eric,

I would really like to meet up with you guys, but those dates exactly
fall on the dates that I'm not in Baguio.

I hope there would be other opportunities for us to meet. Anyway, I
hope you enjoy Baguio weather and hospitality.

Would any of the average bank depositors know which database
technology their bank uses and care which? How about banks that use
dBase still?

Re: Are commercial databases worth it?

most banks don't use UNIX-based or Windows Server-based systems for storing account and transaction information; they use mainframes ;)

I actually don't care about that - I need to know what they do with my
money because that's their job, so the question should better be
addressed to the bank themselves. I'm pretty sure the average
depositor would care less. But I'm pretty sure you already know that.

Re: Are commercial databases worth it?

For me, I don't care.  As long as it's working & functional, 99% uptime and available and of course secured,
then that would be great!  It's worth my bucks! Customers have different perspective on each, may it be
closed-source/proprietary or open-source. Previously when I'm in college, whenever I say its
closed/proprietary, its secured and my money is worth taking it. But time has changed. Both worlds have
enough insecurities & vulnerabilities. So its only a matter of time.

Again, it will be based on their assessment.. But in my opinion, I still consider the Total-Cost of
Ownership as my basis.

Re: Are commercial databases worth it?

Not true. A large proportion of Philippine banks are running on Unix.

As for banks using dBase... I have no idea but definitely none of the
large banks.

Re: Are commercial databases worth it?

TCO of mainframe is very expensive and if banks in PH are still in
legacy mainframe applications, most likely its hardware and apps are
now out of vendor supports. New IBM mainframe will cost $1 million at
least.
