Encrypted Instant Messages using Pidgin

Hi All,

Good evening. I would like to share the Pidgin encryption plug-in  which I recently learned and tested. I tried to document the steps to help out. Hope you'll find this useful.

Apache directive expiredefault A0

Hi,
i got some feedback emails that users are seeing some old pages from
my website. I am using linux 4 and Apache 2.2.3, i found that there's
a directive expiredefault A2419200 - so i set it to expiredefault
A0, restarted Apache. Still some are seeing the old pages. What could
be the possible reasons?

I am thinking that since those users already got the A2419200
cache/expiration time in their browsers, they are seeing the old pages
still, unless they make a refresh to get the new pages and the
expiredefault A0.

any insight, thoughts would be appreciated.

thanks,
june

wrong default route

I have a server out there that i remotely manage. i had a downtime
the other day when we restarted network services. then we found a
wrong default route is laoded on the server upon restart. i have the
configs below. The defaultroute should be GATEWAY=192.168.65.142 but
it loaded GATEWAY=10.2.1.14 upon restart.
Could it be the sequence the interfaces are enabled from eth0 then
eth1 then eth5, the last interface activated its own gateway as default?

Should i delete the gateway on eth0 and eth5 such that it would make
sure only the defaultgateway on eth1 is loaded upon restart?

i just can't restart network services and see what happens, the server
is in production and it takes a lot of authorization before i can
restart it.

thanks,
june

After the hostname change, network services has been restarted and caused for the routing table to lost the proper default route.   There's nothing wrong in the MOP nor incomplete and the recommendation is to "add checking of default route"  -- network properties like ip address, netmask, gateway, were not changed. Though a network restart is needed for the hostname change.  As I further check the server this morning, i found there were 3 default routes that is configured on the server -  w111647lweb2003.   I suspect that the 3rd route had overridden the supposedly default route -  GATEWAY=195.33.56.142  which is the front-end.  Hope our other Linux TAMs can share their insights.

Ricardo,

So it's probably my limited understanding.......but how is it that the default network route would have been removed during this change?

The summary points to a problem with the MOP/change - however, I don't understand the relationship (if any).

outsourced virtual private servers with "C-Panel" or other similar features

I'd like to know where in the Philippines can I find resellers of Virtual Private Servers with "C-Panel" to manage files, databases and ftp. We are into Joomla Content Management System, therefore, they should have support for email, PhP, Phpmyadmin, MySQL, FTP with read-write access to all files and folders.

As of now we have our own web server and we are hosting 50+ websites, mostly Joomla/Mambo CMS. We are contemplating to migrate our connection to DSL (Globelines Taipan packaged 3Mbps with 256Kbps CIR) from the present T1 at 1.5Mbps due to cost considerations. At present we are paying a monthly of P32,000 compared to P3,000 more or less Taipan package with 2 public IP address free. However, many from the plug community suggested that we outsource our web hosting or get a VPS which give 99.9% uptime and reliability. Now I'm inquiring.

Since most payments for the VPS services are done online or thru the Internet, we prefer a Philippines-based "reseller" for administrative requirements of our agency to have a bidding process, have the voucher signed when check payment is received. We are that. I know somebody from our place but he cannot participate in the bidding since he is also an employee of our agency. We are in Leyte. Thank you.

xfce4-terminal force to foreground?

Hi all,

I've set the gnome preferred terminal to xfce4-terminal. I've also
bound it to a key sequence (actually, a keystroke, the windows key)
so that it's easy to open a new terminal.

I have just one problem though. Very often (although never when there
are no other open windows) when I press the windows key, the
terminal will open, but it won't come to the foreground (I just started
the terminal program with an explicit keystroke, I always want it to
come to the foreground). It sits on the task bar, gently pulsing/glowing.

Is there a command line parameter (or xfce4-terminal setting) I can
give so that it always comes to the foreground when invoked? Is
there a general X windows parameter that will force any X program
to the foreground when invoked?

I could switch to gnome-terminal I guess (I like having multiple terminals,
no tabs and no menubar), I'd like to stick with xfce4 though, since it's
smaller but is more convenient than, e.g., rxvt or xvt :-). I just tried
out gnome-terminal. It doesn't have the slowly glowing on the taskbar
behavior, so that's my backup solution, if no other solution comes
up here.
