ohio linuxfest - September 29

Hello,

I thought I would drop you folks a personal note to say that I hope to see
Morlug/MorFree at the Ohio LinuxFest this year. West Virgina will be well
represented at this year's event and I hope that you come out to show your
support. Warren Woodford of MEPIS will be presenting a talk about distro
building. In the expo area, WVUTech CS students will be showing off linux
gaming to promote their lan parties "Lanville."

If you folks have any questions about Ohio LinuxFest, I will be on this
list for the days before the show.

Thanks,
Beth Lynn Eicher

Morlug ...

Anyone interested in taking over the MorLUG website and Mailing list?

I'm thinking of switching ISPs, and would like to off load this onto someone else before I do so.

Off-topic: Anyone like Ron Paul

Any Ron Paul fans here? If so, drop me an email. If you're
curious/don't know who Ron Paul is, he's a libertarian candidate for the
2008 US presidential nomination, running on the republican ticket.
Hope to hear from anyone interested!

New to the area

Hi gents,

I'm new to the list so I just wanted to introduce myself. I've been using
Linux for about 10 years now. My first venture in to Linux was downloading
Slackware disk sets over a 14.4 modem and installing them on my 486. :) I've
since tried several other distros but Slackware is still my distro of choice
for personal things.

I'm relocating to the Bridgeport area from Columbus, OH but you guys are the
closest LUG that I can find. Hopefully I'll be able to make it to a meeting
sometime soon.

I'm also actively looking for work so if anyone is looking for a good Linux
sys admin or knows of any other related work please let me know. A brief list
of my skills is included below.

Cheers,
Timothy

Groupwise on Ubuntu

Ya - hooo.  I found an article on the Ubuntu forums on GroupWise on Linux / Ubuntu

http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-147278.html

it worked....

Before I was unable to read / send any HTML formatted documents.  I am sending this from the GW client on Ubuntu

Some of the libraries they mention were already installed but the others were straight forward.  Note that the Java client was installed previously on my system via Synaptic so steps 8, 9, and 10 were not done.  Also in step 11 it would not work with the symlink linked to the current java.  I left it as is / was and it seems fine.

OpenSourceHowTo.Org

hi everyone, I’ve setup a website so that users of open source server side
software can come and look at instructional guides, how-to's, forums,
wiki's and all sorts of other information about setting up software on
Linux for both windows and Linux based networks.
http://www.opensourcehowto.org

I am currently still working on it, adding new screen shots every day,
hoping to double check a lot of my how-to's once the screen shots are
added & once that is done I will hopefully be adding streaming video of my
how-to articles using either embed code from meta café.
http://www.opensourcehowto.org/how-to/

I’ve also added the ability for other members of the Open Source & Linux
community to add there own howto’s if they sign up and post there own
blogs. It’s a bit of a new feature to the site & I’m really looking
forward to taking off and having lots of different people adding there own
information.
http://www.opensourcehowto.org/users-howto/user-howto/howto-create-your-own-content.html

I've made heaps changes over the past 2 months now here is a list of just
some of them.
http://www.opensourcehowto.org/announcements/

I really hope there is some useful information for people here on this
website & please, if you have any advice or help on this website, I'd love
to hear it.

WVU CTS?

Is there a WVU Computing & Technology Symposium trade show this spring?

I had been looking forward to it as always, but haven't heard anything at all about one being planned this year.

Then again, there isn't a COMDEX any more either...

ACM OpenSource Fest 2007 - Call for Submissions!

The WVU chapter of ACM will be holding it's second OpenSource Fest on Wednesday, April 18, 2007. This year, we would like to set it up in the lobby area of the Engineering Sciences Building, this way we can actively engage passing students and show them the promise and power of the open-source movement.

To that end, we need your help. Throughout the day, we intend to give active demonstrations and tutorials relating to certain open-source topics. If there is a particular piece of software or hardware that you would like to demonstrate or talk about, please let me know as soon as possible. If you think your students would be interested, please tell them about in class.

The ACM chapter will be meeting next wednesday, the 11th in room 215 of the ESB to make plans. We invite you to show up and participate. Pizza and drinks will be served. More information about the OSFest will be sent out that evening.

Thank you for your interest and involvment.

Junk for sale

So I'm doing some spring cleaning, and I'm willing to part with some of
my cherished computer parts of yore. Most people will consider it junk.
  :-)
But hell, if someone needs a cheapo router, or a kiddies-first-linux-box
or something, this might be just the deal you're looking for. So here's
what I've got, email me with offers.

An almost-working HP laptop. The power connector needs re-soldering on
the mainboard, from what I've been told, but I lacked the motivation to
do it.
Intel Celeron 1,6ghz CPU, 256 megs of DDR RAM, 2x USB, 1x serial, 1x
parallel, 1x PCMCIA slot, 1x slimline CD/DVD slot, decent graphics with
D-SUB and S/VIDEO ports, 1x PS2 port, and supports standard laptop hard
drive. The LCD's a decent size. Pictures of the unit on request. I
took the hard drive and CD/RW drive out to use them in another project,
so you'd need at least a hard drive for it in addition to a little
soldering work. Everything's Linux and FreeBSD compatible (it used to
run FreeBSD). If the offer's good, I could throw in a working 802.11b
Netgear PCMCIA card, too. Of course the battery and power supply will
also be included. Also let me know if you're interested in parts; such
as the battery or memory or whatever.

Digital AlphaServer. 128 megs of RAM, 300mhz CPU, no hard drive.
On-board SCSI. System is in working order minus hard drive. Will not
boot any LiveCD distros that I've seen due to esoteric driver needs, but
a redhat install ran on it for a long time, so I know that it is Linux
compatible. Just needs a hard drive to be a decent low-end workstation
or server. 64bit architecture.

A working Pentium-II 350 system, minus hard drive. 128 megs of RAM.
Includes PCI IDE controller, and willing to include SCSI controller if
needed. 10/100 ethernet, etc. Good 'first Linux pc' or misc. crap
server for your home. Willing to throw in old hard drive with Linux
pre-loaded if desired.

Misc. Sun stuff. I don't want to specifically part with any of it, but
a lot of it is collecting dust, so if you can put any misc. older (early
sun4u era) stuff to good use, let me know.

ATX mid-tower case. No power supply. I have a power supply laying
around, but the fan in it is questionable. This case includes a good
Pentium-II CPU, and some likely-good SDRAM DIMMs, but the motherboard is
cruddy (onboard PS2 is hosed, could maybe be used with USB kbd/mse, but
probably not worth it). If you'd like to try-before-you-buy the CPU or
RAM, I'd be cool with that. There's also a decent but old PCI graphics
card on it, that is known to be good.

Please email me if you're interested in any of this stuff, or have any
questions. Also, if you'd like to bring a hard drive for any systems
which are missing it and have me load Linux or FreeBSD or somesuch for
you, I'd be cool with that as well.

Take care, Matt.
