MLUG Mirror Hardware Failure

Dear All!,

We are back online - finally! The MLUG mirror was hit by a minor power outage which caused two of the mirror's hard disks to end up damaged. Due to the way the machine was RAIDed, all configuration files, mailing list info, website and mirrored files were lost. The previous backups available of the configuration and mailing lists are available but may be somewhat dated. I encourage everybody who is on the list, and is reading this, to contact members/subscribers to re-subscribe or signup again to the website.

We have taken steps so that the RAID is more resilient, so that even in the case of 2 hard disks going out, we are still in a position to recover in most cases. This was done thanks to Philip Toledo LTD sponsoring 2 new hard disks which have been installed instead of the two paper weights.

Hope to see you all online and active in our forums once again!

Thanks,

Anton Xuereb

Firefox2 Java Problem

I recently installed Ubuntu 8.04 on my IBM T42 and got this Java problem
which till now I can't solve. I installed Java Version 6 Update 6 (build
1.6.0_06-b02) but somehow Firefox 2 refuses to learn that Java is
installed, Java websites keep complaining that Java is not installed! I
tried re-installing it but nothing changed. Any ideas?

i just tried

sudo apt-get install icedtea-gcjwebplugin icedtea-java7-jre
icedtea-java7-plugin

but still the same! i couldn't locate 'icedtea-java7-bin', I could only
locate the below:

:~$ apt-cache search icedtea
icedtea-gcjwebplugin - Java plugin based on IcedTea and gcjwebplugin
icedtea-java7-jdk - Java development kit based on OpenJDK (transitional
package)
icedtea-java7-jre - Java runtime based on OpenJDK (transitional package)
icedtea-java7-plugin - Java plugin based on IcedTea and gcjwebplugin
(transitional package)
openjdk-6-demo - Java runtime based on OpenJDK (demos and examples)
openjdk-6-doc - OpenJDK Development Kit (JDK) documentation
openjdk-6-jdk - OpenJDK Development Kit (JDK)
openjdk-6-jre - OpenJDK Java runtime
openjdk-6-jre-headless - OpenJDK Java runtime (headless)
openjdk-6-jre-lib - OpenJDK Java runtime (architecture independent
libraries)
openjdk-6-source - OpenJDK Development Kit (JDK) source files

any ideas? I'm on Firefox 2 version 2.0.0.14.

Linux Media Centre

Dear List,

I have been toying with the idea of setting up a LinuxMCE box at home
[www.linuxmce.org]. If you didn't have a look at their demo video, do
so as it will get your imagination going. Basically, I have a couple
of questions on what would be the best hardware choice to get some
decent TV. I am currently subscribed with GO (Multiplus) and have some
Avermedia cards which can take DVB-T. However, I don't have a slot for
placing in the smart card. Am also willing in looking at Satellite as
an option in the future to add on to the programming. My understanding
is that the Maltese stations will need to be changed to free to air
this year or the next by the MCA. Kind of sucks that you can buy a
DVB-T card (which are all without a card interface) from a shop but
you can't hook it up to any TV station in Malta.
