ACTA Speech

Hi Penguins,

I will be present at the meeting of the Malta Anti-ACTA Group (MAAG) today at 3.00pm. In it we will the discuss the speeches that are going to be presented tomorrow at the protest by the various coalition members.

To the best of my knowledge, the Malta Linux User Group has not yet prepared a speech representing its concerns ACTA will have on free and open source software. Unless, there are any objections I will be presenting a (roughly) 4 minute speech in this meeting.

Regards,

David Carachi

MLUG inclusion in Anti-ACTA press release

The Malta Anti-ACTA Group has prepared a press release which should be sent to the press TODAY, and are asking whether MLUG would like to be included in this PR.

This has not gone out to press yet, but it has to go out soon. Are there any objections? If everyone is ok with this I'll tell them to go ahead.

---

The Malta Anti-Acta Group (MAAG) would like to inform the general public of its reasons for opposing
the Acta Treaty. It would also like to announce a public protest to be held on Saturday 11 February at
11am, City Gate Valletta. Various organisations, including Moviment Graffitti, Alternattiva Demokratika
Zghazagh, Front Kontra c-Censura, Forum Zghazagh Laburisti, Kunsill Studenti Junior College, Malta
Alliance for Freedom, ir-Realtá Collective, MOVE Progressive Students and Pulse, support and will be
attending the demonstration.

The Acta Treaty has been negotiated behind closed doors without engaging public debate and has
suffered from numerous problems of transparency. This treaty establishes a committee which operates
outside the normal framework of the World Trade Organisation and which has powers to amend the
treaty itself in a way which potentially circumvents the normal democratic process.

The MAAG is worried that this treaty would result in disproportionate actions against intellectual
property rights infringement becoming the norm. The ambiguous nature of the treaty also makes the
measures introduced for protecting intellectual property rights liable to abuse.

In particular, the implementation of these measures can have a detrimental effect on the rights to
privacy of individuals, forcing ISPs to reveal personal information about alleged infringers. The treaty
also paves the way for courts to consider ordering compensation for infringements consisting of
amounts based on questionable criteria defined arbitrarily by rights holders themselves.

The ambiguous language used in ACTA also puts generic medicine at the risk of being targeted unjustly
as a counterfeit product, stopping the distribution of essential medicines to those who require them
most. This is further aggravated by the border control provisions in the treaty, which would also allow
for the interruption of the transit of these medicines between two non-signatory countries whenever
they pass through a signatory country.

For these reasons MAAG is urging the public to attend the protest on Saturday to express its concern
regarding a treaty which poses a threat to democratic processes, right to privacy, Freedom of Expression
and medicinal distribution.

IN North Africa people communicated even though the internet was down.
Can we show the way how to fight if necessary ?

Re: Acta

Hi all,

I am all for freedom of speech. I trust the police and judiciary in keeping law and order. I however do not trust private corporations to be given such powers to effectively shut down websites (possibly using automation) if they suspect breach of copyright. They are not above the law. If they believe that someone is at fault, then they can pursue the culprit as they already do in Malta. Ask any ISP and they will tell you that they already hand out warnings to their users. This will bring on a paradigm shift in internet privacy akin to the airport security checks post 9/11. In the end, no real criminal got caught with those checks and the real criminals still got dangerous items on board. Who really suffered were the passengers and the airport security personnel who now have a false layer of security to account for.

The goal of ACTA is good. However, the law is unnecessary as it is already covered by other treaties. What it really gives is more power to the media and brand companies. Power which stifles creation of new content and innovation by building a fence wall around current intellectual property. ACTA puts SME's out of business. Jobs - real jobs. Think about it.

Subject: [LINUX.ORG.MT] ACTA

Has anyone taken a close look at ACTA from the perspective of Linux and/or OSS? For instance, with ACTA, DVD
playing software in Linux is illegal (because they still rely on decss). Also, according to an analysis by
the FSF, ACTA would require that ISPs no longer host free software that can access copyrighted media, and
DRM-protected media would not be legally playable with free or open source software.

Linux Mirrors

Hi,

I gave Debian a roll this Christmas and I was pleased to note the speed with which the Debian packages were downloading. Consider that Debian packages are just ar archives of the binaries and other staff. They are not compressed at all.

Unfortunatley, I soon found that Debian is not for me. I will not go into this as it is not fair to complain on the small nuances that irritated me rather the big picture in which Debian excels, and I am not writing this about Debian.

I was downloading the Debian Packages from http://debian.res.um.edu.mt/debian/, but now I am back to more familiar territory: Slackware, and updating Slackware involves rsyncing packages from a Slackware mirror. The nearest mirror (in Italy) is not updated with Slackware 13.37 (a.k.a. leet)  - the latest Slack release, so I rsync with mirrors in Belgium, or wherever.

As far as I know I have never met any of you, but I have a vague hope that someone in this mailing list is the sysadmin of this local Debian Mirror at the UM. If that is the case,  I would appreciate if a Slackware mirror may be included. Naturally I would be ready to help if that is it is feasible. Otherwise I will try to figure out how to set my own mirror, but I am discouraged by the electricity bill ...

Interesting piece of software

Hey guys i stumbled across this
http://www.geekconnection.org/remastersys/ubuntu.html

I am just wondering what could we offer in regards to our own distro, or
do to make a super high performant linux distro out there to date that
is just as user friendly as ubuntu but not so bastardized in regards to
gnome as well as kde with nepomuk

file search software

Hi All,

recently I migrated one of my pc to linux and I have a search issue. Before I used to use google desktop (before migrating) however this option is not available any longer because google no longer supports desktop and therefore I cannot get it installed longer. I tried a few file search apps but was deeply dissatisfied. None where index based searching and they all crashed while in the process of searching.

Therefore I was wondering whether you could recommend me any five star:
a. index searching utility, &
b. normal search utility (i.e. one that goes through files one by one).

for linux?

thanks :)

John
