You guys definitely have a penchant for such useless political
discussions. ;)

They are not totally useless though. I love politics as well as long as
it leads to an enhanced understanding.

It is only when we mix emotions and lose the technical angle that I get
pissed.

Anyway I have worked on Solaris and AIX too.

Solaris was good. Boring but nice.

Linux, Unix are the derivatives of POSIX. They are the rulers of their own
Kingdom. Comparing each is useless thought.

I have worked on AIX for about 3 or 4 years and on IBM Mainframes for
6 months extensively and passively for 3 years. Have worked on Solaris
too, but not extensively. I was never an administrator (even of sorts)
on these m/cs.

I agree that AIX and Mainframes are elephants. Big and bloated.

Speaking of AIX - I found them to be quite reliable physically. It
runs on IBM's own Power PC processors. Some of the parts of the OS
were optimized to work on the Power PC. (I had used a Quad Processor
Box). We have successfully brought down the dev. server many times.
We once did a "kill -9 -l" or something like that, being root. We had
to physically restart the server (unclean shutdown). It worked
perfectly. It was stable enough - particularly the filesystem. Have
never had problems with that. Just that some one with root access kept
deleting our files though. and yes, we had problems with other teams.
A team from a different city used to do a xlC (IBM's C Compiler)

Yes, both are POSIX compliant but calling them derivates is a bit of a
stretch.

To the best of my knowledge, "Bell Labs" Unix existed before POSIX.
POSIX is an IEEE specification not an OS which came about to bring in
standardization in the Unix variants.
