your chosen Android topics

Thanks to all who responded to the survey!

There is high interest in ROMs, software development, and automation,
and practically no interest in backups. (Ironically, backups are a
required component of messing with ROMs, unless you like losing all your
local files and settings. :) )

It looks like the winning topic is ROMs by a slim margin, so I'll plan a
talk on ROMs. I could follow up with talks on software development and
automation at later meetings, unless someone else is interested in
presenting these topics.

I have no experience with AOSP (and actually had to google it to know what you meant), but I have ran Cyanogen
on a couple of phones and was pretty pleased with it. Unfortunately, there's no Cyan for the eeePad,
doesn't seem to be much momentum to do so, and with the Asus Prime having been released I don't expect much in
the future for my TF101 model. I've installed the KRAKD ROM on it, and it's nice enough - better than the
stock Android.

While saying that "Android really is Linux" is _technically_ true, in practice that's not the case. If
you're using the term Linux "correctly" to refer to _just_ the kernel, then yes, Android is Linux. But if
you use it in the sense that most people do to refer to the whole "ecosphere" of an OS, then I have to to
disagree. There are so many proprietary blobs in the way on every device that comes with Android installed
I just can't bring myself to call Android a version of Linux.

Obligatory bad car analogy: If you yanked the motor out of a Ferrari and stuck it in a Pinto, you wouldn't go
around saying, "It really is a Ferrari." would you?

Just my 2 cents.

Bob, I can see you that you like Android quite a bit and are very knowledgeable about it, so I hope that you're
not taking my comments as argumentative/confrontational. It's just my opinion.

On a side note, some of you may find this interesting: a 7" tablet that "... sports an open Linux stack on
unlocked hardware and comes with an open content and services
market."

For others reading, AOSP is Android Open Source Project, which is the
fully open basis for Android. CyanogenMod (CM) builds on AOSP and
provides some deviations from AOSP in the form of extra features and
controls and some apps.

Hardware choice is important. I got lucky with my original Droid, which
was _mostly_ stock Android and was maintained through several releases
by Motorola/Verizon until it mostly didn't make sense to maintain it
anymore. I rooted, unlocked the boot loader, and installed CM 7 on it,
once CM 7 was bugless enough to warrant this. It performed badly,
probably due to low RAM.

From now on, I've decided to only get the Nexus line of products.
Unlocking it and rooting it was easy because the phone was designed to
do it. This means it's really easy for third parties to make ROMs for
it, but it also means easy root with the stock build.

If that isn't an option for everyone (due to carriers or desired
hardware features), check to see if a phone debuts with the latest OS or
is far enough behind that it tells you how hard it is for that vendor to
stick all their inefficiency layers on top of AOSP and "add value."

Well, I'm not claiming that the applications that run on Android are
Linux :) Android is a Linux build that supports running a bunch of

Re: [Bulk] Re: Dell Inspiron 1501

Nathan,

lspci showed:

05:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev 01)

iwconfig showed:

lo         no wireless extensions

eth1   no wireless extensions

I replaced the broadcom driver with ndiswrapper following the steps in the link you posted.  iwconfig now returns a proper readout for wlan0

Thanks

I know ndis can be a bummer, but I am glad you got it online.
Hopefully it works well for you.

My original question however asked for the outprint of `lsmod`. I was
curious if the right module was actually loaded. It's possible that
it was not.

iwconfig is one level up from the module, and would only be valuable
to us if the right driver was loaded.

I'd actually even volunteer to do an intro talk on it if no one else
is using it, but I'd prefer an expert give the talk as I'd like to
learn something.

Barring that I would even like a semi-intelligent discussion on the
list here about mcollective or orchestration in general..

Looking for adjunct instructors

Hi all,

I posted something like this a while back, but we're looking again.
To restate, I am an instructor at ITT Technical Institute (Where CPLUG
meetings are held!) (I'm the one that brought the students to the
meeting ;) We are looking for computer networking instructors, not
just for Linux. For more information and to apply, go here
https://careers-itt-tech.icims.com/jobs/7704/job

Thanks!
Amy

Looking for tutor for C programming (a one-time 2-hour session)

I'm looking for a tutor for basic C language programming. Initially, just
one two-hour session.

I'm a 57y/o former library administrator with some computer background but
no formal programming schooling.

I have been teaching myself, but find after reading the material (and
knodding my head yes I understand) that after putting the book down I
don't really understand...

I can and have found useful online assistance, mainly from
LinuxQuestions.org and the debian-users list. But I feel I need someone to
sit with me in-person in front of my computer and discuss options while I
write, compile, and rewrite small example programs.

I feel it would be very useful to have a one-time 2-hour session where we
would go over the basics of types, pointers, and (time permitting)
structs. Using gcc on Linux. Possibly using make.

It would be nice if I could find someone who would do it for the fun of
it, but if you need compensation just state your fee. I can also barter- I
do photography and can mat and frame.

Please don't respond to this list. Email me privately at
keitho at strucktower dot com

I live in Harrisburg (Paxtang) near the East Mall.

Thanks,
Keith Ostertag

February Meeting

Cpluggers,

The February meeting will take place on the 21st due to this coming
Tuesday being Valentines day. We will open with a discussion, and then
have a game networking lab (mini pre-LAN party). Bring your laptop and
any and all Linux based games that you know of for the lab. This will
help us figure out different configurations for networked games, and
introduce us to more Linux based games that we might not have known about.

A Mr. Bruce Bourchard is looking at the possibility of starting a new
LUG in the Hanover area, and will hopefully (if he can make it to the
meeting) be guiding our discussion at the beginning.

I'm still waiting to hear from ITT Tech if we will have internet access
this time around for the meeting. There have been some technicalities
with their policies that I'm trying to work through. I'm sure we can get
this resolved one way or another, but just be aware of the possibility.

See you there!

ltsp

I’m entertaining taking on a small project working with ltsp.  I’m not sure of the details yet, but would like to hear some feedback from anybody with experience in setting it up, hardware preferences, software preferences, any known gotcha’s, etc.  I will appreciate all input.
