Here's a taste...

...of what we'll be doing doing my talk. I'll walk you through the process of
creating a video similar to this one - demonstrating how to use keyframes
with video effects, and how camera automation can be used to create movement
in still images when combined with said keyframes.

We'll do a quick review of the process of getting video off a camera too,
should be fun...here's the link to the googlevideo version of the chlug
teaser...

Meeting Friday

Just wondering what we should have as a topic for
Friday. Will anybody want to commit to a topic
discussion?

I know there was some interest last meeting in finding
out what was up with the Library PC project.

Also, maybe, we could continue with installing and
configuring the CHLUG mailing list with Mailman...

Anybody?

Jerry

We'd like to see everyone interested in staying with
the group subscribed to the "Interim Mailing List"
ASAP.

The old list will be shut down very soon and we don't
want to lose anybody.

Thanks,

Mailing List Info

We will be moving our mailing list temporarily to an
interim server soon. The reason for this is that the
server we are now on at Nothinbut.net has been
decommisioned and will be unplugged soon.

The aforementioned interim server will be located on
my personal server, jesran.net, in a highly
experimental and very unstable environment. The new
list will be just like the old, using Mailman
software.

You will recieve an invite to the new list and several
warnings before we shut off the old one.

Consider this the first.

To subscribe to the new list go here:
http://www.jesran.net/mailman/listinfo/chlug

Hoping for the best,

Gerald D. Neale

cheap notebooks at best buy

Jerry was asking about cheap notebook computers at the meeting
last night. I just noticed on techbargains that Best Buy
is having a sale on notebooks, with some at $400. These
have decent specs and are even decent brand names. In
fact they're better than the machine I'm typing on right now.
The online store is sold out of the cheapest ones, but the
actual store may still have some if you go early. I think
their sale week starts on Sunday, but it may start today.

About Tommorrow's Meeting...

First, we need a topic. Anybody doing anything cool
with there Linux machine that they'd like to show at
tommorrow's night's meeting?

We also have some organizational issues to discuss
that night too.

1) Where to locate the new mailing list? The server
housing this list at Nothinbut.net is being
decommissioned. Moving a Mailman mailing list to
another server is a non-trivial task. I've being
looking into options for the last month; Google
Groups, Yahoo! Groups, ???

2) New leadership is being formed for the group. If
you'd like to get the scoop on that then come to the
meeting.

GPLv3 update

Second GPLv3 Draft Tones Down DRM Language
IDG News Service (07/27/06) Martens, China

In the second draft of the general public license
volume three (GPLv3), the Free Software Foundation
(FSF) has backed down from the rigid and polarizing
language concerning digital rights management that
characterized the first draft. Whereas the first draft
was solely authored by the FSF, "The second draft is
reflective of broader opinion, of the FSF and
thousands of other people around the world," said the
foundation's Eben Moglen. The first draft described
DRM as "digital restrictions management," and
prohibited software licensed under the GPL from being
used in DRM software. The DRM portion of the second
draft has been overhauled with considerably milder and
more general language. Instead of dealing with the
technology specifically, the section has been retitled
"no denying users' rights through technical measures."
The second draft also clarifies the language
addressing large software distributors that own and
cross-license patents to protect end users from claims
of patent infringement. The draft suggests that a
company could continue to ensure free access to source
code by directing users to a Web site that hosts the
software. The section on licensing compatibility,
which many felt was difficult to understand, has also
been substantially rewritten. The issue of legally
binding translations of the license remains unclear,
Moglen says.

Aug 4th meeting topic

Hi.

Bryan, I was wondering if you and/or John would
like to bring us up-to-date on what's happening with
the Cherry Hill Library project.

What does CHLUG have permission to do? What might
we want to do (both that is allowed now and that we
could start lobbying for later)? Are there things that
members could be helping with now, or will things be
coming up this winter that you'd like to get the word
out about?

Are the Open Source Software and Linux training
classes part of getting the Linux boxes into the
library, or are they a separate deal? Do we know how
much lead time the library needs? Shouldn't there be a
couple of introductory or overview type classes first,
before we do Firefox and OpenOffice.org?

I still want to host an OSS and/or Linux Games
Night at the library this winter. Someone will have to
handle physical set up of the LAN and the Wesnoth
server (and BZflag, etc), but I'll manage the "social
engineering" part (i.e. I'll herd children and teens).
Oh, and maybe a Linux Games Night for grown-ups only
(poker, bridge, chess, Wesnoth, BZflag,... is there a
free-trial for World of Warcraft?). Is that arranged
through the same people at the library as the training
classes?
