Presentation: Be master of your domain; Commoditize your ISP and other services

Paul Elliott will show how Linux users can commoditize their ISP and
be cool by acquiring their own domain name. Your ISP does not need to
control your email address or your web address. He will show how
common GNU/Linux programs such as mutt, kmail, evolution, and Mozzila
Thunderbird can be used to send and receive email, using IMAP,
connecting to a free mail service such as google apps, which can hold
the mail associated with a domain.

He will show how a subdomain name combined with ssh and dynamic DNS
can be used to "phone home" from a mobile laptop to a home desktop
computer. X11 screen programs can run on a remote desktop but the
display can be on the mobile laptop.

The original presentation with this title was rained out. Second
chance to attend.

The Presentation will take place from 7:30 to 9:00pm March 11th at the
City of Austin Waller Creek Complex at 625 East 10th Street in
downtown Austin.

Thomas Cameron - RHCE Loopback event in Austin

Thomas Cameron asked me to post this to the list...

Howdy All -

We're looking at doing an RHCE Loopback event in Austin. See
http://www.redhat.com/rhceloopback/ for what the last one was about.

I've been asked if it makes more sense to do a day event or an evening one.

If you're an RHCE, can you let me know which would make more sense to
you? Also, please pass this along to any RHCEs you know!

Thanks!

Austin Linux Party during SXSW, Open House - Sunday, March 14 - THIS SUNDAY

i need help promoting this event. If you can at all stomach Facebook
please join the event group there.
Link: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=345604301165

You can contribute more than bug reports and code to Free Software!
Participate in demonstrating Linux, talking Linux, showing up at Linux
parties! What is the purpose of a party - to socialize! To learn
people's names, to talk about what they are doing with Linux - to talk
about whatever and such.

This is community organized. I posted on
http://Twitter.com/AustinLinux that I would like donations - and Dell
has stepped forward to provide $300 for food and soft drinks. Texas
Coworking on 6th street (above BD Riley's near The Driskell Hotel) has
donated the space. Do you know others who might want to donate, we
could add better hard drinks and such! Speak up, this is 5 days away.

Sunday, March 14, 2010 - 1pm to 4pm. "Open House Party". I have made
arrangements so that we can come up to 1 hour early and stay 1 hour
late. Promote awareness of Linux, Free Software and community
participation. This is during the middle of _SXSW Interactive_ that
is going on at the Austin Convention Center.

Local Free Software users, including Linux are encouraged to stop by
during the party. ANYONE is welcome, including SXSW attendees from out
of town. The Dell money will be spent to provide food and soft drinks.
I will have vegan snacks and such for those so inclined. I am
donating some of my own money, including the ALE requested Rum! I
will also be bringing beer and wine, we can do . Donations of money
are welcome, please coordinate with me.

Austin Linux Party, Open House-Sunday TOMORROW - 1pm, read please, URGENT

I want to invite that we move all planning and travel discussion over
to the ALE / GWLUG mailing list. Can you please sign up there so we
don't have to cross all this on both lists? I am choosing that list
as the most people have been in attendance at their Wednesday meetings
and have heard the most details of the party. Let's work together
folks.

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/GWLUG/

I'm spending a lot of time on this party planning and want to be sure
anyone who has time or energy to contribute knows what is going on -
hence desire to all be on one mailing list.

Where: Texas Coworking, 200 E. 6th Street, 3rd Floor. -- Austin
Above B.D. Riley's pub on 6th street, right near the Driskill Hotel.
When: 1:00pm to 4:30pm Sunday March 14. Locals who want to help,
please show up at 12:00pm.

I am posting more party coordination details to GWLUG list shortly. Thank you.

PLEASE Telephone Anyone you know in technology or Free Community that
may be interested... please spread the word

P.S. Thank you to Jeff Sullivan representing Dell for meeting me at
the grocery store - We got 3 shopping carts full of soft drinks and
snacks from Dell! Please come participate, one and all!

P.S.S. Texas Coworking http://www.TexasCoworking.com is providing
free space, free Internet, free electrical outlets, tables, etc. So
