If you are so smart, what is stopping you from writing better articles
and getting a job with these organizations? Show everyone how brilliant
you are.

Speaking only for myself, I tried writing for _SysAdmin_ magazine.
Frankly, there is no organization anywhere on the planet that has
ever treated me worse than they did. I don't know what it's like for
other publications, or if maybe things at _SysAdmin_ have since
improved.

I also know that most journalists don't get paid squat, which
explains a lot of the problems of most of them not understanding
anything and not being able to write about it in a coherent manner.
So, it's got to be something you're doing because you've got other
means of support and you can afford to be a journalist because you
love it, and not because that's how you make your living.

Everyone else will just kowtow to whomever writes the checks.

Re: Write don't fight

We're pretty easy to deal with at SourceForge, Inc, nee OSTG. In fact,
before I became an employee, and wrote for them as a freelancer, it was
the best freelance contract I had ever seen. IDG et al wanted all
rights and the children -- living or dead -- of those rights. With us,
we get a 30 day exclusive, and then it's all yours again, copyright and
all.

My first book, for example, CLI for Noobies, will be published this
summer, and it's mostly made up of material from a weekly column I did
for Linux.com.

Anyway, if you would rather write than fight with a publisher, drop a
note or a pitch to editors at linux.com. We're always looking for
content. In fact, a couple of guys (Jim Parkhurst, for one) have
written for us in the past. Our Writer's Guidelines can be found here:

Did I make a claim of being smart? I certainly did not intend to.

By "media" I was referring not to the software media such as
newsforge, infoweek or the like, but to network television, AM and FM
radio stations, and newspapers such as the Austin Statesman. I am
certainly not a candidate for a job in that area.

Thanks for your reasoned comments, though.

IPTABLES "recent" module.

Greetings ALG folks,

I've been asleep at the wheel for a few years now regarding IPtables and the modules that work with it, but the
"recent" module has caught my eye. I'd like to write a little PERL or Ruby script that examines syslog for
failed SSH attempts and then blocks further attempts from he source IP for 5 minutes. I've found many
example doing similar things, but I would like to write to the /proc/net/ipt_recent/DEFAULT file
directly and I'm unsure about the format of the file. Any hints would be appreciated.

Thanks.
