[Fwd: M$-Linux story]

Hey Group;

Happy New Years;

Have you  seen this?
     http://www.linuxbusinessweek.com/story/47224_p.htm

I see this as a upcoming problem. Likely an effort to destroy any new
Linux related stuff

gentoo install problem

Well, after sampling a few distributions, I'm now trying Gentoo. However,
after I type "emerge grub", the download fails. It tries a number of sites,
all of which result in different errors - unreachable, fobidden, error in
server greeting, or timed out. I haven't changed anything since any other
emerges, and the network connect still works (including name resolution).

I used mirrorselect to populate the mirror list. Is there a way I can add a
different mirror at this point, or is there something else completely going
on?

Chris

Re: Howto view windows hdd

I have mounted NTFS before. I have viewed it and retreived data from it.

The maintain of the linux mount for NTFS does not recommend that you
write to the FS, but I have writen small files to it and had no problems.

I still would not recommend writing to it.

Edit your /etc/make.conf. If you remove the GENTOO_MIRRORS="" line,
emerge should only pull from the official ftp. You could also try
using some of the larger mirrors. Try:

GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.ccccom.com http://gentoo.osuosl.org
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo"

Cheers,

Brian

Re: [Fwd: M$-Linux story]

Looking at the summary "In a move dear to the hearts of conspiracy
theorists, Microsoft has taken a minority position in Vintela Inc, a sister
company of the SCO Group by virtue of the Canopy Group (Ray Noorda), their
common investor."

SCO - The Evil Destroyer.
Canopy Group - The Allower.

Add to that the desire for the almighty dollar and M$ displacement directive
of opposing interests, Linux will survive the Open Source/GPL alternative.
It's out there and people that know what is REALLY going on, know what they
need to do. I, for one, will watch this like I watched SCO gather the many
masses of licenses for the code that they shared with the projects.

Re: [Fwd: M$-Linux story]

This is probably an attempt to quell the thunder Novell is getting from
their SuSE and Ximian announcements. With NDS (eDirectory) working on M$
Windows, Netware, and Linux; M$ had no real clear answer nor product to
compete with this scenario. After all, M$ always got an "F" in the area
of "plays well with others". You can bet everything you have that M$
will continue with their funding of smaller entities that furthers their
broader global goals of dominating the software industry.

ide-scsi or hd#=scsi help

Hey Group;

PROBLEM: "cdrecord --scanbus" fails - common "can't find pg" error.

I recently reloaded a machine that was working as hdc(DVD) and
hdc(CD-RW) machine. So, I feel that it is not a hardware issue.

The devices are defined in /etc/fstab as basic IDE hd* drives
infomation. EX. [ /dev/hdc  /media/cdrecorder subfs "morestuff" ].

In grub/menu.lst I have two trial lines under different labels.
1. with hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi
2. with hdc=scsi hdd=scsi (new in the kernel Doc)

Both seem to work with a 2.6.10 kernel. After reboot a check in
/var/log/boot.msg shows the kernel transferred ide to ide-scsi imulation.

However, "cdrecord --scanbus" fails to find it. "strace -o sr.err"
fails to enlighten me as to the problem. "ldd" shows cdreords libraries
are ok.

I do have the "sg" and "sr_mod" mounted as shown by "lsmod"

Anyone think of a problem. Maybe another command to check

Because it is a reload of a working SuSE 9.2 I don't believe it is
software. I think it is setup or permissions. Maybe "resmng".
