JumpDrive 128M drive

Hey Group;

I have setup some other USB drives before and have ad good luck with
mounting them. I found one for $19.00 yesterday and it is giving me an
error - "mount: /dev/sda1 is not a valid block device". It is seen by
that other OS and shows that it is formatted with a FAT32 file system.
"lsusb" and "hwinfo" do see it.

Anyone have any ideas or experience with one of these Lexar Media
JumpDrives / 128Meg.  I am running kernel 2.4.26.

Re: JumpDrive 128M drive

I assume you are running SUSE.

Mine never worked with WUSE 8.1 and I haven't installed the latest yet.
It didn't work on Fedora Core 1, but it did work with Knoppix, so I
copied the usb files from the Knoppix CD to the HD that had Fedora Core
1 on it and it worked.

Have you tried using it with Knoppix?

fdisk it and then format as a single partition. As received, most thumb
drives are not usable under Linux because of a weird partitioning scheme that
permits "locking" the drive. DO NOT believe the "formatted with FAT32"
message.

Well Bill - Get Core 2 and the 2.6 kernel and it does work.

Thanks John;

However, fdisk /dev/sda failed also. I formatted it in Winblow XP and
Fedora at least works. SuSE fails even with a 2.6 kernel

First... let see if your Linux box even recognize your Jumpdrive. Note: you'll
most likely have to be root user to do most of stuffs here, unless you set
your account to root privilege.

> "lsusb" and "hwinfo" do see it.
Since you mentioned that you did /sbin/lsusb and saw your jumpdrive, you can
skip to step 3. But it's good to run through 1 and 2 just to be sure. ;o)

1. Check your /etc/fstab file and see if this line or something similar exist

none    /proc    proc    defaults   0  0

If not, you should add this line and do a mount -a

2. Plug in your Lexar USB Jumpdrive, wait a few second, and type the following
command;

more /proc/bus/usb/devices

You should see something similar to this:

S:  Manufacturer=LEXAR MEDIA
S:  Product=JUMPDRIVE
S:  SerialNumber=D419212331100
C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=80 MxPwr= 90mA
I:  If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=08(stor.) Sub=06 Prot=50 Driver=usb-storage
E:  Ad=82(I) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS=  64 Ivl=0ms

Re: JumpDrive 128M drive

My apology. Error correction (change from deb to dev). That damm keyboard [v]
and [b] sitting next to each other...

To mount your USB Jumpdrive type

--> mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /mnt/jumpdrive

NOT --> mount -t vfat /deb/sdb1 /mnt/jumpdrive

Re: JumpDrive 128M drive

Not sure what distro you are running. I have a Dell Latitude that with
SUSE9.0 read my LEXAR drives without problem. When I upgraded to
SUSE9.1, the LEXAR drives were now being mounted as file folder type
(/media/usb-storage...). I have not checked if VFAT is installed. I did
update my kernel to 2.6.5... via SUSE.DE, but the problem continues. In
my post of the same problem earlier, it was suggested that kernel 2.6.7+
would fix the problem. I have not gotten there - yet. I did find some
related complaints googling for "suse 9.1 usb lexar" and indications of
fixes.

 overflows. 12.17.1, 12.17 and 12.16 are some versions that are not.
