Dsl without phone service?

I remember some tips here about how to deal with SBC, so I figured
I'd ask a question about them.

Right now I have phone service and DSL with SBC. I would like to get
rid of the phone line because I always use my cell phone so the
landline never gets used. I called SBC today to cancel the voice
service and keep the DSL, but they said I need to have voice service
in order to keep the dsl.

I understand that I need the physical phone line in order for the DSL
service to work, but it doesn't make sense to me that I should neet
to keep the voice service if I don't want it. They are separate
services.

Can anybody say whether there is a technical reason that I need the
voice service?	Any other ideas for dealing with SBC on this issue?

Re: Dsl without phone service?

There isn't a technical problem where you can't just have DSL. They
know they can get away with this because most people use a regular
line. This is exactly one of the main reasons I switched from SBCs DSL
to RR.

I did see a recent article about a company in the NE that was going to
start selling DSL without lanline.

Bottom line, SBC has a near monopoly and force a lanline because they
know 95% users will just except it. If enough users switched over I
guarantee that they would get rid of this requirement.

Re: VPN advice?

Matt:

The router (after being setup correctly) handles all
aspects of IPSEC, the end result is that the details
of VPN are all handled by the router. No VPN client
software is required to encode decode the encrypted
packets. The clients just communicate normally as
though they are communicating two to each other via
local gateway or bridge. For example, I can ping my
son's computer at 192.168.1.2 from my network address
of 192.168.10.2. Notice that both local network ID are
different and we can ping each other with a mask of
255.255.255.0.

When I use netmeeting or GnomeMetting, I just type in
192.168.1.2 or "Jon" for short if Jon is defined in
the hosts file as 192.168.1.2.

Regards,
Lee

There is no technical reasons why you have to have voice service to have
DSL service. In fact, SBC sells data services such as T1 lines and SDSL
without requiring voice service.

You are basically hosed. SBC doesn't have to sell DSL without voice
service, so they don't. They see DSL as a way to hold onto voice
customers which they are losing at a tremendous rate. They are
constantly trying to find ways to bundle services to get more $ from
each customer and they see voice + DSL as a natural bundle.

Contact the corporate offices, not the help line or the order entry
people, and explain what you want. (Look in the phone book for problem

Re: Dsl without phone service?

yes. I went through earthlink to meet that goal, as I didn't really
trust TW to not stick back on at some point. -Matt
