Greetings and question concerning Upgrading to XFree86 4.1.0 on Mandrake 8.0

Grettings!

I am a newbee to Linux and have recently installed Mandrake 8.0 on my
home machine. I live in Marlbe Falls and ran across the ALG a couple
weeks ago. I have been monitoring the discussions for a couple of weeks
in the hopes of gleeming what I can from the communication among some of
the members. I hope to attend my first meetings in August. I work in
Spicewood about 20 miles west of Austin off Hwy 71.

So far, it has been quite an experince!!! But, I have learned a lot and
am beginning to feel more comfortable dealing with the problems
encountered getting programs to install and work properly after
installation.

Right now I am struggling getting the TV support to work on my computer
using the Linux4Video driver. (However, I do have it working with the
old Gatos driver!) The latest ATI.2 binary from
www.linuxvideo.org/gatos requires XFR3386 4.1.0 but Mandrake 8.0 comes
by default with vbersion 4.0.3. I have tried an SFree86 4.1.0
installation but found it left my machine without the nice login
interface provided by Mandrake 8.0 and did not load a shell at all. So,
there is something I am missing to getting a clean install of XFree86
4.1.0 on the Mandrake 8.0 distro. I have tried the ATI.2 binary that
does support XFree86 4.03 but the Xv driver does not appear to be
loading and I have no /dev/video assignment. I have sent a few e-mails
to the "livid" list, but no one has responded. However there is
discussion going on conerning another AIW adapter problem.

So, my question to ALG is: Has anyone any experince upgrading XFree86 on
Mandrake 8.0? If so, I wouild appreciate your insghts into the matter.

Missing CDs

Hey All -

I believe that I may have left my bag of CDs at the last
meeting. It's a Fellows black fabric CD case with a bunch of music CDs
and a few DVDs in it. If anyone has seen it, please drop me a line to
caperry@... as my home mail account is on the fritz (
&^#*&^ing bell ). Thanks in advance!

delayed messages, was: Re: mail

My mother (in her 70s), uses email, but doesn't get a lot
of it (just family) and she's not very good with it yet.
I want to keep her using it often enough that she doesn't
forget how and also, want her to feel that I'm being attentive
and that she's keeping in touch with me often. So, I collect
jokes/humorous stories/etc. and then queue them up to
send, one a day, 7-10 days in advance. Then next week, I go
out and do the same thing. ;-) I throw personal messages in
there every other day or so -- the kind I can write in advance.
It saves me time and keeps her in practice and keeps her happy. :-)
Isn't UNIX/Linux wonderful??? ;-)

What can I say? I know it's tackey, but it works. ;-)
So, don't try to make me feel guilty. ;-)

:-)

ncpfs

If there is someone on the list that has some experience
with IPX and ncpfs that would be willing to do a little
consulting work (for me) I'd really appreciate it. I am more
than willing to compensate someone for their time.

I eventually could figure this out but I simply don't have
time right now. I can get you on my box remotely if need be.

I need to be able to mount several drives and at least one
printer from my box.

Contact me off list at david@...

Many Thanks

David
