Greetings and question concerning Upgrading to XFree86 4.1.0 on Mandrake 8.0
Grettings! I am a newbee to Linux and have recently installed Mandrake 8.0 on my home machine. I live in Marlbe Falls and ran across the ALG a couple weeks ago. I have been monitoring the discussions for a couple of weeks in the hopes of gleeming what I can from the communication among some of the members. I hope to attend my first meetings in August. I work in Spicewood about 20 miles west of Austin off Hwy 71. So far, it has been quite an experince!!! But, I have learned a lot and am beginning to feel more comfortable dealing with the problems encountered getting programs to install and work properly after installation. Right now I am struggling getting the TV support to work on my computer using the Linux4Video driver. (However, I do have it working with the old Gatos driver!) The latest ATI.2 binary from www.linuxvideo.org/gatos requires XFR3386 4.1.0 but Mandrake 8.0 comes by default with vbersion 4.0.3. I have tried an SFree86 4.1.0 installation but found it left my machine without the nice login interface provided by Mandrake 8.0 and did not load a shell at all. So, there is something I am missing to getting a clean install of XFree86 4.1.0 on the Mandrake 8.0 distro. I have tried the ATI.2 binary that does support XFree86 4.03 but the Xv driver does not appear to be loading and I have no /dev/video assignment. I have sent a few e-mails to the "livid" list, but no one has responded. However there is discussion going on conerning another AIW adapter problem. So, my question to ALG is: Has anyone any experince upgrading XFree86 on Mandrake 8.0? If so, I wouild appreciate your insghts into the matter.(Continue reading)
