Virtualization Technologies

Hi Everyone,

In looking at discussion topics for future meetings, virtualization is
a topic that has come up a few times. Personally, the bulk of my
experience is with VMware (workstation and server) as well as
VirtualBox. I also have some experience with KVM and Hyper-V
(windows). However, if anyone has experience with KVM, Hyper-V, Xen
or any other technologies, and you'd like to participate please let me
know. I'd love to either have a presentation or open discussion where
each of the current major players are, their approach to
virtualization, and where they may be headed in the future.

If you are interested please let me know.

Thank you,

VirtTech + plans for Linux Fest

I also have high interest in this
been looking at oVert, deltacloud, eucaliptus, and openstack... oh and
oh boy- i guess i better make the basics like KVM and stuff that I am
barely familiar with (I am being stupid!) I am getting used to
VirtualBox and have used VMWare Fusion for a few years but they dont
count on Virt plats (really)

Since Tex Linux Fest is in San Antonio, we are also gonna have to get
hotel rooms to be there economically... I think we should think now on
grouping up so we don't get screwed for boarding.
I am super bad on money so networking on this upcoming weeks in advance
would be good for me and others in my position.
Can we network on working something out?
-T

Re: VirtTech + plans for Linux Fest

Awesome... I'm currently attempting to do a vmware to kvm migration
on my laptop at work partially because I'd like to use KVM and
partially because Ubuntu 12.04 has to run a development preview
version of VMware which runs...pretty...badly...

As far as Linux Fest I'm not sure if I'll be able to take Friday off;
I may just hit the Saturday venues in which case it'd be a day trip
for me.

How many people are looking to go to the Linux Fest?

Re: VirtTech + plans for Linux Fest

I am wondering about doing anything Friday. I think lodging will be
prohibitively expensive, so unless I am convinced otherwise to go Friday
I may blow it off. I also wish the website gave more info on times on
things. It is less than a month away and they aren't specifying much.
Plus someone hit my car in the HEB parking lot which tore off part of my
bumper so I am gonna have to pay for a replacement. Haven't even made a
first payment on my new MacBook's loan and am on the edge financially

Speaking of the new machine, what KVM config do you have? I wan't to
try to run it in a VirtualBox instance and see how slow it is to run VM
inside a VM ;) I think this new machine might surprise me again LOL. I
abandoned VMWare Fusion for VirtualBox at this point.

I should also look into desktop glitter like DT environments, docks,
Cinnamon, such including GKrellM etc (if you have a good setup let me
know what you use and I will copycat it. No Gnome Shell though! :) . I
have been ignoring such fluff to stick to under-the-hood stuff like
reading bash stuff and struggling to remember where important config
files are. http://www.thegeekstuff.com/ has so much stuff... very useful
CLI and config file tips I am never going to get bored with.... I just
wish they made the hacks ebooks free

Re: VirtTech + plans for Linux Fest

I actually gave up on KVM on my work box in favor of VirtualBox. I
haven't messed with KVM enough with Windows (or linux for that matter,
but more so for Windows) and since that was the primary reason I
needed to run a virtual machine I wanted to go with something I was
more familiar with.

However, on my personal laptop I plan on setting up a bogus windows
session to play/learn kvm w/windows. On the linux side, KVM seems to
"just work" which is always nice :)

Dell Laptop + Dock

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone had any luck getting a Linux laptop to
dynamically change its video settings depending if its docked or not?

My configuration is a Dell Precision laptop (M4600) with a Dell dock
at work. The laptop has an nvidia graphics card (quadro) and I'm
running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS w/the binary drivers. At work I've got dual
monitors connected to the dock.

I had configured Xorg to use the two external monitors as twinview.

If I boot the laptop up while not on the dock it boots fine and sees
that there is only one screen. This works great when I take the
laptop to a meeting or bring it home to do some work on. When I plug
it into the dock, the laptop recognizes the hardware (i.e. usb ports,
etc.) but nvidia doesn't seem to recognize the external monitors.

Likewise if I plug the laptop into the dock and power it on, it
correctly comes up, sees the two external monitors and lets me login
with a nice large screen. NVidia can see the laptop monitor. If I
unplug the laptop from the dock however, I only get a blank screen on
the laptop and can't seem to do anything other than cycle the power.

Ideally I'd love to have the laptop recognize the graphics change and
adapt to it...I was wondering if anyone else ran into this issue
and/or had solved it or had any thoughts on it?

Thank you,
