How to install ATT DSL?

I am planning to install ATT dsl basic and have some questions:

W Q of Dallas sent me a very fine Siemens SpeedStream Gigabit SE567.
Thank You.

I would like to, if possible, install ATT DSL w/o using Windblows.

If neccessary, I have a legal copy of windblows xp home edition that I
got with my sister's computer. It is a virgin install, totally
unconfigured. I never use it when the internet is connected. I
use it to install commercial products that require windblows to
install. It is not even on the boot menu. When I need it every 6
months or so, I boot it using Super Grub disk.

I see on the internet two procedures for installing sbcatt dsl without
windblows:

http://www.obviously.com/tech_tips/Yahoo_DSL_setup_no_CD.html
and
http://www.willlaw.org/blog/diy/how-to-install-sbcatt-yahoo-dsl-without-the-install-cd-in-5-easy-steps/

However, these 2 procedures mention web sites and login names with 'sbc'
in them. Since ATT has changed its name again, will these procedures
still work?

Perhaps when ATT changed its name, they changed things like
'sbcyahooreg@...' and 'https://sbcreg.sbcglobal.net/' to
something with out 'sbc' in them and now these procedures need to be
changed?

Re: How to install ATT DSL?

The short answer is that you cannot complete install without at least
running a Windows VM. The DSL registration site only functions with
IE6. Not even IE7, just IE6. The "official" AT&T DSL install CD now
even ships with the Microsoft IE6 VM simply to use the site. The pages
render in other browsers, but the navigation does not work.

You are welcome to try yourself, they may have fixed it problems in the
last few months. The logins you mention do in fact still work as of a
few months ago.

odd KDE issue?

I've got a user running OpenSuSE 10.3 (64-bit) and he's generating LARGE .xsession-error files.  We've got other users running OpenSuSE 10 through 11, each running KDE 3.x (as it's the standard here at work) and running dual screens with nvidia cards (in case that's somehow causing the issue).

This user is the only user that's generating these large files...and by large I mean, 2GB is pretty common (sometimes within a day).  We've seen the files get as large as 100+GB too!

I'm a little stumped on what could be wrong...It all looks like something with KDE, but I don't know what he's doing that others aren't...

He's running a tripple screen setup using Dual NVidia cards.  Most other workstations that aren't having this problem are running either dual or tripple screen setups as well using dual nvidia cards.

As far as what he does, he mostly just has firefox and kmail open as well as lots of kde console windows open to ssh into other systems to display logs or run commands.

Some lines from the .xsession-errors file are:

tabbed notepad for Linux?

Hey everyone,

I've got a curious app I'm looking for on Linux...  The idea comes from my mac running Microsoft Office 2004 (along side iWork).  One of the views in the Word component of Microsoft Office 2004 is the "notepad" view.  When you select this, it changes your screen to look kinda like a yellow notepad and everything is in bullet-form by default.  What I really like about this is that you can make new Tab's in the document.  So, for example, I could keep all my notes in a single document, but organize them into tab's--each tab for each day of class or something.

I'd like to find an app in Linux that's similar for taking notes on things.  Does this exist?  I know you can have tabs open in applications like gnome-notepad, but they aren't saved as a single document.

Thanks,

Robert

Re: tabbed notepad for Linux?

This doesn't sound exactly like what you are asking for but it may fit the bill.

http://www.tiddlywiki.com/

It's a personal Wiki contained in a single HTML file. No program to
install; just open it in a browser and edit away. When it saves, it
rewrites the HTML with your changes. I use it as an engineering
notebook and it is great for that since you can organize notes, link,
search, etc.

Re: tabbed notepad for Linux?

You may want to try Basket, a KDE app. It is basically a note-taking
application, but it has levels and sublevels, and you save it all as
one file. It's fairly advanced.

getting ntp running, gigabit se567

Since I now have dsl dialup, I thought I would use ntp, instead
of chrony. Chrony solved problems with dialup, but because dsl
is on all the time, not needed now.

I should set my ntp server to be north-america.pool.ntp.org?
Is that correct?

The specifications on speedstreem gigaset se567 router says
it supports the ntp protocol.

Does that mean that the router itself is a NTP server or
just that it lets ntp (123) udp packets thru or something
else?

Thank You.

Re: getting ntp running, gigabit se567

I use us.pool.ntp.org - multiple times. It's a round robin DNS so you
get a unique server on each entry. The advantage of using US over
north-america is you exclude (potentially) high-latency servers in
Mexico and Canada.

The router supporting NTP usually means that it can synchronize it's
time with NTP for logging purposes. Beyond that, they usually do
nothing. If you are very lucky, it may broadcast NTP on the LAN side.

Own my own domain?

Since I will be changing ISPs, I thought I might consider
owning my own domain.

I thought I would get one that I own, so I could transfer
it in case of problems with the register.

What is a good domain to get? What should I know?
