Fun with FC6 and acpi-cpufeq

Hello,

It appears that FC6 has some brokenness in how it handles acpi and cpuspeed.
If you have problems wherein modprobe complains about being unable to
load acpi-cpufreq.ko, you might want to make sure you're running the i686
version of the FC6 kernel. By default, it appears that anaconda installs
the i586 kernel which just doesn't work.

What you need to do is pull down the kernel-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6.i686.rpm,
boot into the rescue shell off the CD and rpm --force -ivh it.

Well, you might not need the rescue shell. I did. When I tried doing it
in multiuser, lvm.static kept hanging up in an i/o wait, trying to figure
out my LVM configuration. Because this never finished, the mkinitrd step
was never completing. Upon reboot, I had an instant brick. Doing this
from the rescue shell seems to have worked fine, though.

(BTW, this info was found after about a week of googling for fc6 and cpufeq
issues. If you really want to know where, I can probably dig up the info
 again.)

Beryl, Kubuntu, Feisty, AIGLX, Nvidia... Help!

As the title suggests, I'm having trouble with Beryl, running Kubuntu Feisty Fawn, with an NVidia card, on AIGLX. When I start it, it spits a bit of babble out, takes the window decorations away, and doesn't do any more. Or at least, when the nvidia driver is enabled. When I go back to standard nv, which makes Beryl go to AIGLX, it gets a bit farther. Then, it spits a bit of babble out, does the squiggly Beryl splash screen, fades to white, and suddenly jumps to the login screen. Anyone know what's wrong?

Re: Beryl, Kubuntu, Feisty, AIGLX, Nvidia... Help!

I'm using Beryl on Ubuntu Edgy now with an nVIDIA card. It was a pain
to setup, specifically needing the beta nVIDIA drivers from this
repository:

deb http://amarancth.selfip.com/ edgy lrm

That made it start to work at least. From there, I have seen the some
of the problems you describe. Specifically, when I login I sometimes do
not get any of my GNOME panels, and sometimes Beryl doesn't start. I
think this is a issue with the login processes not waiting for previous
ones to start and/or not starting in the correct order. In any case,
it's only on first login, and a simple CTRL+ALT+BkSpace and relogin
fixes it every time.

It's a pain; but for warping, the desktop cube, transparency, and the
genie effect it's worth it.

Re: Beryl, Kubuntu, Feisty, AIGLX, Nvidia... Help!

First some clarification :

nVidia  - Video Card Driver - Controls the Screen/Monitor
AIGLX/XGL - X server with GL extensions - Controls graphics on the screen
Beryl - Composite-ing Window Manager - Controls behavior and placment of windows in X
Emerald - Window Decorator for Beryl - Controls the Look of the border around a window

Each of these depends on the previous, so in order to start beryl you must be running Aiglx/XGL, in order to start emerald you must be running beryl, etc,

Now, in order to troubleshoot this we should start at the bottom:

>From a clean boot:

When you start X does the nVidia Splash show up?  That means you are using nVidia not nv drivers.  (I am pretty sure you need nVidia NOT nv)
Can you start Aiglx (called xserver-xorg-air) without a window manager or any thing else? (Failsafe terminal)  (not sure how to detect this, Xgl will show up in the process list, but I don't know about Aiglx, maybe ps -A | grep xorg-air ?? )
Can you start Aiglx with out starting beryl-manager (e.g. use metacity) ??

Let me know and I can help some more, also include the "bit of babble" if you can get it.

Nicholas

P.S.  What directions did you use to set all of this up??

One other thing:

To apply Occoms Razor: Feisty Fawn, is unstable, that's why.

Re: Beryl, Kubuntu, Feisty, AIGLX, Nvidia... Help!

I only have a couple of issues with SVN Beryl on Ubuntu Edgy with the
beta proprietary NVIDIA driver. One issue is that the title bar on each
window is gone, so I have to right-click on the task on the bottom panel
in order to minimize, maximize, or kill it. The second issue is that
gnome-terminal doesn't work. I'm getting around that with xterm.

But the themes and all the eye-candy I've tried so far are pretty solid.
Each morning, when I get the latest beryl, I expect it to crash, but so
far, so good.

That's strange, because Beryl seems to think it can run fine without AIGLX/XGL if it has nVidia. See "bit of babble".

When you start X does the nVidia Splash show up?  That means you are using nVidia not nv drivers.  (I am pretty sure you need nVidia NOT nv)

No, but that's because I went back to disabling it, leaving Beryl to use AIGLX. I'll try that, and repost when I'm done.

Can you start Aiglx (called xserver-xorg-air) without a window manager or any thing else?

Meaning, shut down the xserver (don't know how, find the /etc/init.d that says x and stop it?), and then running "xserver-xorg-air"? I haven't tried yet, but that's because I'm not sure that's what you want me to do.

Let me know and I can help some more, also include the "bit of babble" if you can get it.

 The "bit of babble" is:

1) Some error messages that happen every time I start any graphical app from the terminal. The graphic apps still work.

X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 167
  Major opcode:  145
  Minor opcode:  3
  Resource id:  0x0
Failed to open device
X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 167
  Major opcode:  145
  Minor opcode:  3
  Resource id:  0x0
Failed to open device

2: Something like this. I can't be certain, because when I launch it, I either can't do anything, or I have to log back in. (depending on whether NVidia is enabled)

If NVidia is enabled:

Can't find XGL, looking for NVidia...
NVidia found
Relaunching with __GL___BLAHBLAH

If not:

Can't find XGL, looking for nVidia...
Can't find nVidia, looking for AIGLX...
AIGLX found, using it

P.S.  What directions did you use to set all of this up??

Beryl wiki, Edgy instructions. Feisty is just a couple unrelated packages difference.

I haven't tried beryl yet, but I installed "nvidia-glx", edited the driver to "nvidia", not "nv", and rebooted twice. No screen. I'm going to try setting it to "flyingtoaster", just for a test. Here's my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

If you are not using the beta NVIDIA driver, it's not going to work.
