Re: OT: DSL providers (Not satisfied with Rapid System)

I ran across a documnet a while back that allowed you to convert the
Telocity modems to work with ethernet over power lines. Its been about
a year since I read about the conversion, so I will need to dig it up.

I seem to have too much on my plate lately. I need a server built. I
will provide the hardware. I need RH9 (I will provide), sendmail,
spamassassin, webmin, SSH, secondary dns (I will provide the file) and
RAV Antivirus (I will provide the software and dat files).

Anyone interested email me back and let's discuss pricing...

Scott

Re: I need a server built

I had a lot of problems getting sendmail working with Spamassassin and
NAI-TVD antivirus. So much trouble that I am trying it with Postfix now
instead.

Re: I need a server built *Revision*

Yep, I've had alot of probs with spamassassin also. But, I just noticed
that the virus software also has a spam filter, so scratch the
spamassassin...

I failed. Rebooting was the only option left.

Guys, I've failed somehow. I had to reboot my Linux
desktop workstation. I know, how weak of me (:

Seriously, I locked my screen last night when I left
but this morning the screensaver would not provide the
password prompt. The design on the screen danced
happily away but no password prompt. Ctrl+Alt+F1
didn't switch away from X.

I switched to another box and logged in with SSH. Top
told me X was taking the most CPU, 99% of it. I
started killing programs in X like xscreensaver, wine,
terminal, vi, gkrellm, etc. No good. Then I killed
X. No good, the screensaver's graphic was frozen on
the screen. I killed the shell running X. No good.
X was gone but replaced with colored stripes (NOT from
the screensaver). I killed all of the gettys, no
good. I ran telinit 3 to no avail. Finally, I gave
in and rebooted.

Can you see anything I did wrong so I can avoid the
atrocity of rebooting in the future? Seriously, I'd
like to know if there are other ways to recover.

Re: I failed. Rebooting was the only option left.

Don't feel so bad, Chris. Even I have to reboot occasionally.
Usually after JEA's gone and left me in the dark for more than
the 25 minutes worth of UPS power I maintain.

No system runs perfectly. I spend an exciting week or 2 back in
the mid-80's trying to figure out why our mainframe was going
south around 4 p.m. each afternoon. And mainframes aren't
rebooted (well, "re'IPL'ed") but every couple of months, usually.

As long as there's SSH or telnet ability, I'd have attempted to
restart X remotely. Assuming the system wasn't irreparably
corrupted, that would have cleared the chunder off the X terminal
screen. Or, if you like blind typing, just attempt to login/start
X at the X console itself.

I've been seeing some injury from certain websites running under
the latest Mozilla. They feature embedded multimedia ads (which
are VERY annoying - can't read the article because of the
yammering from the commercial). Anyway, there's a glitch
somewhere that causes the ad to keep loading and reloading and
reloading and .... This runs Mozilla to very high CPU usage and
loads down the network with bogus requests. I have to manually
kill Mozilla to get rid of it sometimes.

   Good luck!

Thanks! Good stuff, and Debian-based. Excellent.
