I failed. Rebooting was the only option left.
Guys, I've failed somehow. I had to reboot my Linux
desktop workstation. I know, how weak of me (:
Seriously, I locked my screen last night when I left
but this morning the screensaver would not provide the
password prompt. The design on the screen danced
happily away but no password prompt. Ctrl+Alt+F1
didn't switch away from X.
I switched to another box and logged in with SSH. Top
told me X was taking the most CPU, 99% of it. I
started killing programs in X like xscreensaver, wine,
terminal, vi, gkrellm, etc. No good. Then I killed
X. No good, the screensaver's graphic was frozen on
the screen. I killed the shell running X. No good.
X was gone but replaced with colored stripes (NOT from
the screensaver). I killed all of the gettys, no
good. I ran telinit 3 to no avail. Finally, I gave
in and rebooted.
Can you see anything I did wrong so I can avoid the
atrocity of rebooting in the future? Seriously, I'd
like to know if there are other ways to recover.
