Now there's an excellent question for a "the basics of Linux" question. Well,
maybe not 'basics' but certainly 'how stuff works behind the scenes'.

I want to start trying out quarter-hour talks on basic Linux stuff - how to
get basic home networking going, how to share files, how USB works, etc.
These don't have to be complicated or detailed, but just enough to show that
Linux isn't hard to understand if you put a bit of time in. If anyone wants
to give a talk on anything like this, now matter how simple or esoteric,
contact me!

(Side note: I also intend to do one of these on 'how to present stuff at
meetings and conferences' too :-)

On the original topic, I use 'shred -vz' to wipe disks - it's a single
command, it can run on files (I use the '-u' option for files to zero the name
in the directory before deletion too) and disks, it can do a number of passes,
and it's pretty much self sufficient. I imagine once you go into init 3, shut
down everything else that you can and shred the disk, there's not going to be
much to do after that...

Have fun,

Paul

Re: [clug] Wiping a (running) system...

Thanks all for the various answers and emails about this, in the end I
did a bit of all suggestions:

Step 1: apt-get remove --purge as much as you can for all running
daemons (ntp, autofs, portmap, etc -- just keep using 'ps -ef' until
they all die).

2: mount tmproot -t tmpfs -o size=1G,nr_inodes=16k /mnt/tmproot

   rsync -aPx / /mnt/tmproot

   pivot_root /mnt/tmproot /mnt/tmproot

3: mount -o remount,ro /

4: "Begin with the threatening"

   for i in 1 2 3; do
      dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/≤device>
   done

[clug] Android devices behind transparent proxies, and squid extension_methods

Hi,

I'm trying to update various applications on my Android phone using wifi
and behind a transparent squid proxy. It fails when it tries to use a
non-standard HTTP request method.

Anyone able to suggest where I can start looking? It seems that when
people come across this problem, the beginning non-standard request is
present where I have four underscores. Searching for "android
transparent proxy" and "android transparent proxy app store" brings up

I've finally completed the Rep(St)Rap I've been working on for over a year now.

I think this is exciting so I'm announcing it to all of you :P

There are some pretty pictures on my blog at http://www.cgsy.com.au.

Very cool.
Info on the Brisbane RepRap (acrylic Darwin with Mendel-style extruder) here
  http://projects.pelrun.net/search/label/reprap
There's also a "real" Mendel getting built. Both are at Brisbane Hacker Space.

Cheers,
Arjen.

[clug] Vaguely off topic: iPeds and other Android tablets - availability and comparisons to that Apple one

Hi folks,

not really Linux-y per se but I'm interested in realistic comparisons
between the emerging Android tablets and that other one from Apple.
Does anyone know of a local (ACT) supplier of iPeds? I've played with
a few iPads - the "is it three times better than an iPed for three
times the money?" question is bugging me. Unless I'm totally missing
something there aren't a lot of direct comparison reviews about (based
on odd Google searches). All I have to go on for iPed info is vendor
brochurespeak on eBay.

Cheers, Andrew

Found out last night that iPad doesn't have a USB port.

lolwut?!

That's a deal breaker for me, even if I had at any point thought I might buy
one. Which I haven't.

What's the point of complaining about the lack of a feature in a device you were not interested in to start with?

Here's how your statement sounds to me:

The Komatsu 930-E[1] doesn't have a bluetooth compatible stereo or remote central locking. That's a deal
breaker for me, even if I had at any point thought I might buy one. Which I haven't.

You could at least complain about how the font rendering is blurry (traditional Apple vs World argument),
it doesn't support multitasking, has a closed source philosophy, or doesn't contribute to the Free/Open
Source Community.

Fair point :)

Yeah, I don't like those things either. But I wasn't going to buy one,
anyway ;)
