I just had a look at the testing results for RHEL (SuSE's was similar)
and it's not much more than a bare pass. All the musts and some of the
shoulds were hit, but almost all the optionals were untested.

So there's still a long way to go, although I do admit that many of the
optionals are probably supported but weren't specified as such in Red
Hat's letter of conformance. (I dunno if RHEL for example includes the
Mobile IPv6 work in their distribution, but it's out there for years
now... And maybe not updated in years, mobile-ipv6.org has patches for
2.6.16...)

I do like that the status reports is organised by RFC, that's pretty
reassuring. (As opposed to "does it work with what our existing
equipment implements")

More interesting though is that only two appliations have been certified
so far, Microsoft Outlook 2003 and Internet Explorer 7. Mozilla
foundation really ought to get their butts in gear on this one...

[clug] Internode and Billion 7401VGP-M

I get the sense that this topic has been discussed in some detail here
recently, but I'm not sure if this particular combination has been
talked about.

I'm about to move into a house where I will want a data connection.
I'm leaning towards an internode 'NakedExtreme ADSL2+' deal and
wondering about modem / router hardware. Internode recommend the
Billion 7401VGP-M as an all-in-one solution with wired Ethernet,
wireless 802.11g and an analogue port for VOIP.

Has anyone used one of these and can offer comments? Are there better
choices out there? Are there better places to buy the router than
through Internode? I do note that the online prices for the Billion
are up to $20 less than Internode's $199 but after delivery etc it may
not matter. I have not used any Billion product. Is their build
quality and reliability up to scratch?

So many questions...

I bought one of these for a friend on Nekkid ADSL and it works just
fine. At least it does static DHCP address allocation unlike my
Linksys WAG500G thing. rrrgh.

Hi Michael,

I've had a hard time dealing with one of these:

http://au.billion.com/helpdesk/index.php?action=ticket&id=NjM2Ny02NDE3MDIxMDM2&ide=amtAb3psYWJzLm9yZw==

(click the [+] for the comments)

Looks like it doesn't handle IGMP subscriptions properly. However, this
should only be a problem if you need proper multicast behaviour (in our
case, mDNS, required for a printer to work).

However, I can strongly recommend Internode. We're using their nodephone
service (with a little Linksys PAP2T) and it's been going great.

Cheers,

Jeremy

Hi Mike

I've been looking at naked DSL too and at this stage am leaning toward
iinet. Similar packages to Internode but has the added bonus of offering
Abc's IVIEW without usage being added to download allocation.

May be worth a look before your final decision

Re: [clug] Internode and Billion 7401VGP-M

Hi,

I've been on Exetel's Naked ADSL2+ since moving to Canberra in January.
Overall I've been very happy. I've used a Linksys PAP2 ATA for the
cordless phone connection. It was a struggle to get it working with NAT
initially, and it gave some voice quality issues - which I eventually
solved by updating the firmware - the rest of the family wanted to throw
away our VoIP phone service by then! Its working reliably again now,
and we're enjoying the savings of $50 p.m. broadband, and < $10 p.m.
phone bill.

I'd definitely recommend getting an integrated ATA in your router if you
can - will solve any NAT issues, and any upstream QoS will hopefully be
automatic. I don't have any specific experience with this Billion model
though I'm afraid.

I have been very pleased with Exetel as a provider - not much geared up
for supporting clueless end users, but as a technical person, I've had
help from them when I've needed it.

HTH

I got one of those with Internode. It works fine. No ADSL2+ for me
because I'm off a RIM so I just have ADSL1 that slows down at night, as
it does for everyone else around here no matter the ISP.

I have one, purchased via Internode and on ADSL1 here (Armidale NSW).
Works fine. I'm also on NodePhone 1 which has been working very well
also.

Purchasing it from Internode meant it arrived preconfigured which was
nice - although not vital. More important (for me) is having a single
point of contact for any issues with the equipment/connection -
although so far (touches wood) there have been none.

Regards, Dave.

I have Internode ADSL1 at home with Nodephone 2, using Billion 7404VGP-M
that I bought from the computer fair about $100 cheaper than from Internode.
Works perfectly, though you don't need the build in POTS support (hence the
7401, I assume). Good thing about using models that they approve is that
Support will help you, plus you can use their config files for easy
configuration.

As for VOIP quality, it's brilliant. Internode have dedicated QoS hardware
all the way from you to the Internet. Plus Internode kick ass :)

I'd recommend using Nodephone 2 on Internode's Naked ADSL2+ Extreme with
7401 purchased from the Computer fair with the latest firmware and
Internode's provided config file.
