Re: FW: Scott McGrail

Hi Cineon survivors' list.

Forgive me for sending this out, but I have something I need to ask of any old Kodakers, and this is as good a place as any...

Someone I know asked about the legendary Marcie, of "Kodak Digital LAD Test Image" fame. Who is she, and where is she now? What's the story?

There is even a Facebook group dedicated to the quest for info, with 45 members and growing.

(And no, I haven't developed a scary obsession with her and become the first Marcie stalker.)

Paddy

Marcie

She'd have to be a bit older these days :)
We used those pictures in the late 80's. As I remember, they were stock
pictures taken in Rochester.

Re: FW: Scott McGrail

I talked with Tom Meier, an old time Image Scientist in E.I. about this.
Here is his reply:

Here is what I know about Marci. Although I have been at Kodak for 36
years, I have only been in EI 10 years. So I have to go by what others
have told me and how I remember what I was told when I asked similar
questions. Here is the Marci story.

When Kodak first tests new films, they need the correct lighting and
they are not always too critical about the actors - a large number of us
regular employees have been actors or actresses in these preliminary
film tests. I do not know what film was being developed, but it was a
motion picture film and it must have been a daylight film. So to test
it, they went to Florida. One of the people who went took his family. So
here they are in Florida shooting tests with this new film. Someone got
the idea to shoot some pictures with this fellow's daughter, whose name
was Marci, as the main subject. As I heard the story, she is a middle
teenager at this time. I do not know her last name or her father's name.
After they came back to Rochester the film was processed and it was used
for whatever purposes the test shoot was set up for. At some later date,
for testing and calibrating film scanning, people were looking around
for some images that might be good to use. Somehow the image that was of
this young lady was chosen. The gray patch and the other color patches
were added so as to make a suitable calibration frame. As I understand
it, at one time there were film frames that people could use to scan and
record. But then later it was decided to make a digital version of the
frame, what we now call the "Digital Marci".

What about Marci herself? As I said, I do not know her last name, but I
heard that she is still living in the Rochester area. I heard she is a
school teacher, but have no idea in which school district or if she is
even in Monroe county or one of the neighboring counties.

I hope this helps,

Tom

Tom - that's fascinating, and I'm pleased to say, still slightly mysterious. I'd be mildly disappointed if you'd said - oh yeah, she's Marci Smith and here's her email address.

May I post your reply for the Facebook group?

This is almost true. Her name is not marcie, from my recollection.

She was named marcie by Dave Snider (who was dating a marcie at the time).

I have seen her in local Rochester TV commercials from time to time
(when I used to live there).

Not only was he dating a Marcie, but he married her as I recall :)

I think Glenn Kennel might remember the details of those photo shoots.
