Re: discuss Digest, Vol 26, Issue 1

I'd be interested if a lot of the interaction can be done by email.
I'd like to become more informed on the various issues, etc., so I
guess volunteering is the way to go. However, I move around alot.
For example, having just arrived from Tokyo, I'm in Toronto now, will
be at Unversity of Guelpy at end of June, then going back to Japan for
an undetermined amount of time. If I can be of assistance and
contribute via email, then count me in.

WB move -- pressure for Canadian DMCA?

The announcement by Warner Brothers that it would not show previews of
its movies in Canada seems like a thinly disguised move to pressure the
government into its own DMCA.

Is anyone sane asking for evidence of WB's claims?

Or am I overreacting?

I'm certain that once this decision impacts their ability to
market/export films to Canadian audiences, WB will reverse this
decision (quietly). This is just noise to convince legislators that
somehow advanced screenings of major USoA films are something we
*need*. I reckon we'll get on fine with the regular releases.

Moreover, is anyone pointing out that Canada is not the only place
where movies are recorded live with video cameras
(http://www.michaelgeist.ca/content/view/1913/).

I guess I'm not convinced they will reverse this quietly based on it
negatively impacting revenues. While this is a different industry, the
recording industry has been claiming that all its failures (some
self-inflicted by their poor public relations, and some based on
modernization of the industry where their component is no longer
necessary) are due to infringement. The movie studios will see
declines in people going to movies and will then try to falsely claim
that this self-inflicted decline is also due to infringement.

I wrote a letter to my MP earlier today with pointers to some lawyers
writing on this issue. It is current given Industry Committee is
currently doing a study on this. If anyone in this forum is (or knows
someone) in one of the ridings represented by an MP on Industry
Committee, make sure they write to them! Everyone should be keeping
their MPs up-to-date on these issues, but it is especially critical
currently with Industry committee members.

How do find out who is on the committee? I tried to find out but my
searches did not produce anything. Do you have a link to the list?

Difficult News

Hello everyone,

I have the difficult task to convey that CLUE webmaster and community
activist Gerry Roderick Singleton passed away last night (May 12) in a
Toronto hospital.

I have few details except that he died of a heart attack, that must have
been very sudden because we spoke yesterday morning and he was in his
usual good spirits. Friday we attended the Toronto DrupalCamp together.
Besides his involvement in CLUE, Gerry was head of the OpenOffice
documentation project, involved in many forms of open source advocacy,
and active in his church.

I hope to have more details by tomorrow regarding funeral arrangements.
He will be missed by many.

Holy crap, that's some sad news Evan. I just spoke to Gerry a few weeks ago.

And I'll resume all sysadmin work for CLUE for now.

It's a double whammy for his family; Gerry's mother died less than two
weeks ago. I had to drag him to DrupalCamp just to get him a change of
scenery; he'd been spending most of last week going through his mothers'
effects.

Thanks, Bill.

I hope that nobody objects if CLUE buys some flowers and/or makes a
crontribution to the Heat Foundation in Gerry's name (depending on what
his family would prefer).

I certainly wouldn't object. Gerry's contribution to CLUE has been
huge and greatly appreciated. Flowers and a donation is the least we
could do.
