Issue with virtual hosts in Apache 2.2.9 on Debian

I've had a strange issue with my Apache instance on my Debian box since I
updated it earlier this week. I'm using Debian's stock configuration for
enabling name virtual hosts (even though I currently only have one site active).
In my ports.conf file I have this:

Listen 80
NameVirtualHost *:80

<IfModule mod_ssl.c>
    # SSL name based virtual hosts are not yet supported, therefore no
	 # NameVirtualHost statement here
	   Listen 443
</IfModule>

Then I have virtual host stanzas in /etc/apache2/sites-available/default like
this:

<VirtualHost *:80>
	[. . .]
</VirtualHost>

It seems like until earlier this week, that "Listen 80" line was unnecessary,
but when my default site no longer loaded, I added it in, and now everything's
fine. I've tried to read the Apache documentation for virtual hosts, and that
"NameVirtualHost *:80" clause looks like it's all I should theoretically need
for requests on port 80. When I comment the Listen 80 out and reload the
configuration, it doesn't listen anymore.

Anyboday have any ideas about what's going on?

locale settings

Anyone know how to check for the locale setting in Fedora 9? When I do
locale -a all I get is a long a$$ list of all possible languages. I
thought that I had it set to en_UTF-8.

Interesting google result

Out of stupidity I just googled "youtube".

The first hit included a youtube search box.

First time I've seen that. Is there a way I can get that for my
website? Or is that something custom Google did for Youtube?

Thanks
Greg

Help Desk software?

Anyone know of a free (or at least relatively cheap) software that can be used for help desk tickets?

Remedy has already been ruled out due to its high cost.

Top open source tools for multimedia web page development

For an artistic adult who is smart, but not necessary technically
inclined, what would the best open source tools to learn to be able to
do slick, hip multimedia web pages that integrate audio, video, blogs,
and even aggregate data on what's hot in a specific genre of music/film?
I think a steep learning curve is OK in this case, as long as there
are good books/tutorials available for it.

Thanks, Daniel

Video Podcast CLient

Ok. I know I've heard this before but for the life of me I can't find
it.

I'm looking for a podcast client that handles video podcast's Ideally
it would sync with an IPOD but that isn't critical. I don't download
that many of them. However a couple of my fav pod casts now do video
stuff also.

As usually I'm thanking everyone in advance.

Oh I'm using Hardy for this. After much going back and forth, it just
works for me without much tweaking.

NFS Issues on Debian after upgrade

I just upgraded one of my debian clients to latest testing/unstable.
Everything looks good except when I mount up my nfs server I can't write
to any files. I try as user "robert" on the client writing to
~robert/foo and even though the directory is 755 robert.users. On an
ubuntu client I can mount the export just fine and have no issues.
There is nothing in the logs on either the nfs server or client to
indicate any problems, just the fact the client can't write to any
files and I can't read anything that is not world readable.

Thoughts?

Hackintosh maker bites back at Apple]

It's going to be interesting to see how this comes out. Psystar, the
Mac-clone maker, is suing apple back, charging it with anti-competitive
practices. They say they never copied proprietary code from Leopard and
only borrowed the open source parts.

Top things to know to master Linux?

Greetings all,

First, thanks for telling me how to view all the timestamps for a
file, and recommendations on USB enclosures.

Now, what do you think should be mastered, or at least known, to
"master" Linux?

I'm a relative linux newbie, working toward LPIC Linux certification.
I'm working hard to make sure that I'm not paper certified, but
actually have some idea of what I'm talking about. I've got 12 years
or so experience with Windows, some Netware. So I actually have some
decent degree of computer knowledge. I was burnt out for quite a few
years of that though, so I don't know as much as I should. Though, I
have to say, I'm greatly enjoying Linux. Right now I've gotten a bit
sidetracked into the wonderful world of Vim - that is a hella
powerful, very cool piece of software. You can even customize firefox
with a plugin so that it acts like Vim!

  http://vimperator.mozdev.org/

Anyway, enough off topic stuff. I've got all the IBM developerwork
study guides for the tests, and the O'Reilly study guide which is so
highly recommended. I've got a powerbook with a couple of Linux
virtual machines to play with, and a laptop I've installed OpenSuse
on. What, in your mind, is essential to study?

Thanks!

Richard

How Do I ...

I'm running Fedora 8 on a AMD X2 5600+ with 4-Gig RAM.  I'm also running Oracle 11g along with some other stuff (Apache, JBoss, etc.).  This machine is what I like to call my server on a LAN with 5 other machines. Over time I've gotten at least 6 mail addresses and I would like to consolidate them into one place. What I would like to do is the following:
Run a mail server by which myself and the other members of my family can access their mail each it it's own mail box.
Run fetchmail which would read all of our mail accounts in various locations and then populate the above mail servers input.

I've written and tested a script running fetchmail doing a 'check' to determine if it in fact can access out multiple mail accounts.  It appears to work from cron and would pull the mail if I changed the parameters. I want to leave the mail on my local server so that I can read my mail from any one of the 6 machines. The questions that come to mind are:
  1. Where can I find instructions to bring up a mail server?
  2. Which mail server is best (ease of use, easy to maintain)?
  3. Will fetchmail populate the input of the mail server or do I need to run sendmail?
  4. If sendmail is required, where do I find instructions on configuration?
  5. Would this need a back-end database? And if so, would Oracle work?

TIA for your thoughts and consideration,
Gene Poole
