zypper vs yast2 vs rpm installs on SLES/Open Suse

Friends:

What is the difference between

zypper

yast2

yast

rpm

based installs ?

When to use what and what are pure command line options ?

For example if Firewall had to allow certain services I could not do it in one line.  I had to navigate menus to do it.

Also comparing to Ubuntu, there are the regular repos and the ppa's.  Isnt there a similar concept in SLES / Open SUSE ?

Can we mix and match repos between SLES and OpenSuse ? and what about between minor version say between 11.1 and 11.4 ?

SLES, OpenSuse and the 11.1 conundrum

Friends/SUSE experts (I know there is one on this mailing list)

I have SLES 11.1 in office running on a VM.  It is a very tied down SLES.
I am trying to install svn and the one on the  repo local to our intranet.  The svn version is 1.5 but it wont install

"Problem: nothing provides libneon.so.27()(64bit) needed by subversion-1.5.7-0.1.1.x86_64"

I cant find a 11.1 repo on the web for Open Suse 11.1.  I can find one for 11.4 but not sure which one hosts svn.

===========================

On the other hand I have Open Suse 11.1 on my personal VM.  I can install svn there (I think it installs 1.7 version)  but installing maven installs java 1.5 and maven wont even run although it should and upgrading java there was a mess with jexec messing up the situation.

So the question is

how to, with least pain, successfully install both svn and maven 3 on SLES 11.1 or Open Suse 11.1 ?  as in finding repos, like finding AUR's for arch where I feel it is easier.

Any inputs please ?

and

Thank you for your time and attention.

Regards,
-Narahari

Numbers 8 and 9

In a few minutes I'll get a call from a well known company that mostly
started as a search engine. The person calling found me due to work I
have done on a technical project.

Last year I wrote a blog post for job seekers.

http://leamhall.blogspot.com/2012/06/10-vital-tips-for-job-seeker.html

If you are considering a job search within the next twelve months I
recommend the blog post. In this case #8 and #9 paid off for me.

If you are of a religious mind you may be familiar with Proverbs 22:29.

"Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings; he
will not serve before obscure men."

No matter what the outcome, know this: that a self-educated guy who
started his career doing manual work in a furniture plant is getting
this call tells me anyone out there can move forward if they apply
themselves.

RFID Systems

I'm researching the use of RFID tags for inventory control for a truck full of expensive video equipment. At the end of a project, our employees need to be able to do a quick inventory of all the equipment on the truck, and be able to quickly account for its contents. Ideally, the system could leverage an iPhone front end but be served by an open-source back end - perhaps a Rails application that I can write. They may not have internet access, though. Sometimes the truck is needed in locations without cellular access. So, if the application could work offline, that would be great. It's not mandatory, though. Perhaps all I need to do is learn how to do local storage in html5.

Any advice or suggestions would be welcomed - especially if you have direct experience with RFID. I've written an inventory tracking system which uses bar codes, but for as many (sometimes small) items as they need to track on this truck, that would take too long. Also, it can be a separate and simpler system than what I've done.

Thanks for the advice.

Suggestion for ARM box with 3-4+ PCI-based ethernets?

Alers,

I'm looking for something to replace my existing dd-wrt router (or at
least to separate out my router functionality from my Wifi capability).
I'm looking for an arm box (I want the very low power use of an ARM),
but I want ethernet via PCI (or on-chip), not through the USB Bus like
on many ARM boxes, due to speed requirements. I'm looking for at least
3 10/100/1000 ethernet ports because I want to support multiple WANs,
some of which might exceed 100mbps.

So, suggestions? My understanding is that the RPi's ethernet is via
USB. Cubieboard is only 10/100. I haven't looked around at other ARM
systems.

I'd be willing to use non-ARM if it can get down to the 10-15W power
profile. I'd even be willing to swap over to a "real router" if I can
get the price point down, but last I checked a Cisco of sufficient speed
and ports would cost me several hundred dollars.

Thanks,

-derek

Linux antivirus scanners

What are all of you in list-land using for a virus scanner on Linux
(whether it's scanning the local system or the remote system)?

I'm using ClamAV now but I thought I'd get opinions on other possible
options. My intent is to perform centralized scanning of most of my
machines (mix of OSes).

The ASUS RT-N66U has either DD-WRT or Tomato, can't remember with a
customized UI. When I first got it and the RT-N66E repeater, I saw on
their Tech Support Forums that ASUS actually endorses Flashing your
own version of Tomato or DD-WRT and actually gives a step by step
guide howto.

Guys,

I notice that there hasn't been an installfest in a long time, do
people not do them any more?

Re: Microcenter sells a PC loaded with Linux!

With regards to the Ubuntu laptop mentioned above, it could be this one, aimed at developers:

It's available on Amazon for around $1300. The reviews are mixed, so they're worth a read.

DD-WRT is available preinstalled on Buffalo Routers. In fact, it has become their de facto choice!

Their monthly flier that gets snail-mailed out has had this for
several months now. They have a half page devoted to their PowerSpec

Mafia$haft pre-installed.

One is a start and is better than 0.

emulating a pi?

Hi all,

This may sound like an odd question, but I'm wondering if you can emulate a raspberry pi. At the moment, I just
want to learn how the software side of things works. I don't have a need for the hardware at the moment, and
buying the pi and power supply and case and memory card and usb hub and wifi dongle, etc. would probably cost
me over $ 100. I know I can run any standard programming language like python or c on my linux or windows
computer, but I'm also wondering if I can do things like emulating the scratch language and emulating
things like the the gpio ports and lights on the computer screen.

Any thoughts?

Sincerely,

Ron
