Dear Colleagues
There are now more than 6,500 confirmed cases of
swine flu in the UK. The World Health Organization
(WHO) raised the alert level to phase 6 in response to the spread of the new
influenza A(H1N1) ("swine flu"). This is the highest level on the scale from 1
to 6 and is characterized by sustained person-to-person transmission of the
influenza A(H1N1) virus in a second of the total of six WHO regions.
In raising the alert level, the WHO is
responding to the fact that several countries have confirmed new cases of the
disease. The increase in the number of infections in the UKin
particular means that personal hygiene is all the more important, especially in
contact with people who are returning from a trip or vacation and in contact
with other people in general – at work, for example.
Influenza viruses are passed on by droplet
transmission. Especially when people sneeze or cough, pathogens can also be
transferred to and then spread by their hands.
The following recommendations
will help minimize the risk of infection:
· Do not cough or sneeze on other people or let
others cough or sneeze on you
· Cough and sneeze into a handkerchief (not into your
hands)
