Cofundos project: Bookmarklet for CKAN?

We've been meaning to list some open knowledge projects on Cofundos
(collaborative funding/development platform) for a while now. We
discussed this at our weekly meeting on Wednesday, and have put up a
very brief project proposal:

   http://www.cofundos.org/project.php?id=130

Description:
 > Project: Bookmarklet for CKAN
 > A bookmarklet for CKAN to facilitate the registration of knowledge
packages. See ckan.net and ckan page on Open Knowledge Foundation wiki.

Any input/suggestions appreciated!

Re: mapping European OERs

Hi again everyone,

The ODEPO system now also asks for location and contact info (name and email). The location field can accommodate multiple identifiers, which should be ordered from specific to general (i.e., city, state, country, region), each of which then becomes amenable to sorting. See the ccLearn entry for an example. All fields are optional (i.e., "state" may not apply, and you don't have to include "region", though it is necessary to do so if you intend to sort entries that way, such as within "Europe").

Note that we are continuing to work on this system. Any data that are added will be retained, so you need not fear any loss of data. However, we are likely to move the URL of ODEPO to the OER Community site that we are building. All that means is that you may need to update your links at some point relatively soon. Don;t let that stop you from adding in organizational information now though.

Also, if you have additional fields that you are interested in including, you have a few options.

One option is to just let us know. We will not be expanding the number of fields infinitely, but if there is a clear interest in some category of information, we can add it. In the future, we hope to implement a way for anyone (who is signed in) to specify a new category as they wish. We won't be looking into that possibility until later this Fall.

Another option is to use some basic wiki-syntax for the free-form text field. If there is a categorization that you would like to include, you can tell ODEPO that some part of the entry is an identifiable property by using the following notation: [["property"::"value"]]   For example, I might want to put the following sentence into the free text field: "The Creative Commons International office is primarily concerned with the legal porting process for the CC licenses in different jurisdictions."  Perhaps I am interested in categorizing the primary type of activity for organizations in ODEPO; in this case, the primary activity (a "property") would be "legal". I can encode this in a manner that Mediawiki can understand using the following syntax: "The Creative Commons International office is primarily concerned with the [[ActivityType::legal]] porting process for the CC licenses in different jurisdictions."  With this syntax, Mediawiki now understands that there is a property (called ActivityType), and one of the values of this property is "legal".  By re-using this same property notation for other entries, you could add additional values, such as "business", or "entertainment", or whatever.

We are also going to be working on the search function, which is behaving a little strangely at the moment. In the meantime, browsing ODEPO is an excellent way to drill down into the data and sort entries in whatever manner you desire.

Please add your data! Feedback encouraged!

Best,

-Ahrash

Vote for ‘Where Does My Money Go?’ at SUABW poll!

Hi all,

I've just listed the 'Where Does My Money Go?' project on the Guardian
poll for the Show Us A Better Way competition. In a nutshell, the
project would be:

"A web application that would interactively represent UK government
budgetary information using maps, timelines, and best of breed
visualisation technologies."

You can vote for the idea at:

http://suabw.uservoice.com/pages/general/suggestions/33574

More information is at:

http://blog.okfn.org/2008/10/05/vote-for-where-does-my-money-go-at-the-show-us-a-better-way-poll/

Warm regards,

Great stuff Jonathan. I've just voted and despite being registered 4
days after everyone else we've now got a quite respectable 172 votes and
are placed 'fifth'. So, if you haven't voted already and want to do so,
now is the time ...

Workshop on Finding and Re-using Public Information, 1st November 2008

We are pleased to announce a workshop on 'Finding and Re-using Public
Information', co-organised with the Office of Public Sector Information
(OPSI), the Power of Information (POI) Taskforce and mySociety:

http://blog.okfn.org/2008/10/08/workshop-on-finding-and-re-using-public-information/

Details are as follows:

  * When: Saturday 1st November 2008, 1030-1600
  * Where: London Knowledge Lab, 23-29 Emerald Street, London, WC1N 3QS.
(see map http://ur1.ca/87q)
  * Wiki: http://okfn.org/wiki/PublicInformation
  * Participation: Attendance is free. If you are planning to come along
please add your name to the participants list, or email us (info at the
okfn domain).

The UK Government produces and distributes a vast amount of documents
and datasets - from national statistics to environmental information,
from socio-economic data to legal material. Recent technologies allow
this information to be explored, built upon and made accessible in new
ways - whether through visual representation, semantic interlinking, or
through social media applications.

This informal, hands-on workshop will bring government information
experts together with those who are interested in finding and re-using
government information. In addition to focused discussions about legal
and technological aspects of re-use, government information assets will
be documented and tagged on CKAN (http://ckan.net), a registry of
knowledge resources.

Please blog and forward as appropriate!

Re: Vote for ‘Where Does My Money Go?’ at SUABW poll!

We're now 3rd with 284 votes! It would also be great if people would
consider forwarding this to potentially interested parties...

COMMUNIA workshop Amsterdam 20-21 October

"Marking the public domain: relinquishment & certification" - this is
the title of the 3rd COMMUNIA Workshop to be held in Amsterdam on
20-21 October 2008.

For more information on COMMUNIA: http://www.communia-project.eu

The workshop will address the legal, economical and technical issues
related to certifying public domain works and relinquishing
intellectual property rights in Europe.

The first session will consist of two keynote speeches by scholars on
the public domain, to be followed by an introduction of two specific
tools being developed by Creative Commons.

Other two sessions will examine the possibilities of relinquishing
rights in European jurisdictions and discuss tools needed to
determine and certify the public domain status of works that are
(believed to be) in the public domain.

Also scheduled are presentations of organizations and projects that
have build their models or practices) around Public domain material,
and other meetings of the COMMUNIA working groups.

The workshop takes place in Pakhuis de Zwijger, in central Amsterdam.
Participation is open to the public and free of charge. Because of
venue limited capacity, though, participants need to pre-register.

For more information, including downloadable registration form, please visit:

'Ox Bibliophiles' mtg w/ Richard Ovenden: Mon 20 Oct

Dear all,

The inaugural meeting of the 'Oxford Univ Society of Bibliophiles' will take place Monday 20 Oct, 8.30pm, in the Morley Fletcher Room of Worcester College. The group's Facebook page, which includes details on this first event, is here:

<http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=10336171359>

Scheduled to attend is Richard Ovenden of the Bodleian Library, who's leading much of the University's work on digitization projects--including a big Shakespeare initiative called the Shakespeare Quartos Archive. I've never met him, but this seems like a good place for anyone interested to make introductions. Also note that I haven't been involved with this group at all, so I'm just assuming that he'll be there based on their notices.

Couple other relevant links:

1. Aug '07 interview with RO (see linked PDF): <http://www.firstauthor.org/blog/?p=93>
2. March '08 release on Shakespeare Quartos Archive: <http://www.ouls.ox.ac.uk/news/2008_mar_26>

Best,
Nate
