asking for help....

hello.....
i would like to ask a favor if anyone able to provide me some
info on how to build an ip engine using VHDL. i am doing a research for
the university and am lack of resources. i wanted to know about the
VHDL coding and all the modules that i have to take count in building
this engine. VHDL and Verilog Design - Architectural specification, RTL
coding for efficient synthesis to ASICs or FPGAs. Module and System
Verification - Testing environment and testbench development, software
simulation and hardware emulation, FPGA prototyping for ASIC designs.
hope to get your further consideration and help.
thank you

some guidelines for whom who wanna start HDLs learning!

Hi All ,
This message is a reply for a question that we have all asked when we
are starting HDl learning .Please see the reply . I intend to share it
with you after i replied the mail personally ( I think it applies for
many among the peers here ) ..
================================================================
Hi ,
Your question is really very important. It is a sort of dilemma when itcomes to what you are addressing at the
starting level to learn HDLs in
general. The thing that could more complicate the process is the
non-availability of Open source EDA tools that could process HDL
languages ( One of our targets in Open source Solutions is to develop
REAL Open EDA tools which needs Software engineers with EE background ).
There are many free as u stated but Most of them are unreliable. More
over, It distracts the learner as it needs a very tough effort to
understand the tool it self and how to train your self to use it
correctly and make the proper settings for it. Hence, You might find
your self trying to understand the puzzles of the EDA tool rather than
learning the HDL language itself.
Don't worry so much, We have all faced the same and We are still
encountering many problems especially when you are involved in an open
source design. It needs a reliable open source tool too. Some times the
designers are forced to use cracked tools to come with a design out.
Now, I'd like to point you to a very good starting point. We need to
digest the basics of the VHDL or verilog.
Then what about downloading a free evaluation version from a reliable
EDA vendor like Mentor Graphics or Aldec. You can download an evaluation
version from the software for free for 30 days ( enough time to try and
practice basics ) which could be extended by re-downloading the tool
from another machine and so on ... So i recommend for VHDL that u
download the eval version of ModelSim (mentor-graphics)
You could also download an evaluation version for 20 days from Aldec . a
product called Active-HDL (http://www.aldec.com/ActiveHDL/)
This is a nice start for tools ... You can always extend your time by
re-downloading the software from another machine and so on ...
**When it comes to the 2nd part of the query which is the HDL language
itself You can find tons of on line tutorials about both VHDL and
Verilog. When I start learning VHDL I went through this one
(http://www.vhdl-online.de/~vhdl/) and you can find on the following
link a package of some VHDL useful stuff : books, on-line tutorials
..(http://www.cs.ucr.edu/content/esd/labs/tutorial/VHDL_Page.html) .
Here is also a very useful link with some cool stuff that addresses on
line tutorials for Verilog and VHDL and relevant books to HDls and
digital design (http://www.public.asu.edu/~pvsampa/vlsi.htm)
I think the on line tutorial from ALdec is good one That i want to try
when i start learning verilog. (we can start together, Company in
learning is very important and usually ends with fruitful results..:-)
There are also some available free e-books right there within the links
provided above. One of the best from charged books are ( K.C.Chang Books
)
**Digital Design and Modeling with VHDL and Synthesis by K. C. Chang
{Basics of VHDL modeling and coding styles)
**Digital Systems Design with VHDL and Synthesis by K.C. Chang
(AN integrated approach which means Coding, Verification and synthesis )
Also there is ( The designers Guide to VHDL by Peter Ashenden).

Returning back to the free open source tools. I suggest that when you
are a good level that you can start learning to use an open source tool
(which is hard ) like ( ALliance ) http://asim.lip6.fr/alliance.html
it is a complete set of free CAD to compile, simulate and synthesize a
design. It has also a good mailing list that I had just registered to
it.
I hope this might be helpful for you. Please let me know if
you have any further queries.

Best Regards,

        Mohamed A Salem

Re: asking for help....

Dear Friend ,
I hope that the message that I had posted with the title "some
guidelines for whom who wanna start HDLs learning!" might serve as a
partial bridging for the gap you have in resources about HDls.
We would like you to share us the specs of this "IP engine ", SO we can
provide and support you with definite answers for your questions. It
seems that you are still addressing your design from a high level of
abstractions. We need to know more details. I recommend that You post
the specs or direct us to its link and then we can start the
brainstorming with you ..
Hope the above could be helpful and waiting for more details about your
research .

Fw: GIS engine under Linux/Unix

Dear All,

I just wonder if any one is interested in develpoment of a new open source GIS engine under Linux/UNIX
i have a beta version of it under RedHat working with IBM DB2
see the attached screen snap-shot of the software

( I know it should have an arabic name, but geoINFO is the name of this software till now)

geoINFO is an open source GIS engine written from scratch in C, Motif, X-Windows and DB2 on IBM RS/6000 UNIX machine running AIX 4.2, as it is written in the most popular open system tools, the migration process to any other UNIX/Linux platform is so simple ( just recompile the code ),  I have migrated it to RedHat 7.2 Linux easily.

geoINFO is designed so that we keep attributes data inside a database and load the graphics data only to RAM, then access attribute data on request.

This makes it faster in data loading and can handle huge data (up to ram size).

What is geoINFO:

v     Complete design and Implementation of spatial data engine

    • Create database                       (DDL for tables and indexes)
    • Spatial tables design               (DB info, layer, feature, coordinates, ..)

Awsome project. I know only a little bit about GIS, but it certainly seems to
be a very interesting area. Are you looking around for more developers in
general? If so, have you considered contacting someone at the USGS to see if
they would be interesting in helping out with the project?

A handheld GIS app would be very interesting, but right now I don't think I
have time for another project. Based on the screenshot it looks like you have
a lot there already. Is there a site that the code can be downloaded from?

                                                    Mike

Re: GIS engine under Linux/Unix

Dear Hany,
I'd like first to thank and congratulate you for this very powerful GIS
engine. I was also waiting for this detailed e-mail from your side that
could shed light for the community about your GIS engine.
I've searched about GIS and this adds some more clarification that I'd
like to share it here with the members.

GIS engine is simply a computer based tool that would be used in mapping
and data manipulation. The tool should address portability between a
wide range of platforms so it could be used in networking applications.
Hany had used the most portable open set of tools that could achieve an
excellent issue of portability. A very simple example of using GIS is
that : Imagine that we are about making a decision of re-locating in a
new apartment: The decision is about multiple choices we do have in many
different Areas. The decision making will be built from using the GIS
engine ??? HOW ...

The GIS engine is equipped with a data base for all these geographical
areas and their attributes :
Other words : It has maps for Heliopolis, Nasrcity, Dokki, Mohandessin,
New Cairo , ......etc ...
And the attributes could be : Electricity network , water network ,
waster network , clubs , streets , main squares, malls , groceries,
laundries, restaurants, universities, schools, people distributions,
urban compounds , ...... etc .. (THESE are each area attributes ).
Each one of this attribute is mapped on the AREA geography map as a
LAYER. You can mis layers. for instance, I wanna my sons to be joining a
school. SO i'll recall from the database the ARea map and overlay the
LAYER of schools on it and at the same time i think of transportation
means so I'll recall on it the Bus stations around. Then I could make a
decision if this school is secure enough for the kids to come back early
or it is far away from transportation . All at a glance using the GIS
engine. ( Very simple example and so on .. ) You can choose the
apartment and its AREA upon collection information from the GIS that
could help you in making a decision which is WISE>!

Now , If u need more info and you are interested to know more
technically about this you could be visiting
http://education.ollusa.edu/edtechnewsv1/whatisGIS.htm
or www.gis.com
I'm really interested to know more....

Hany, I'm into hardware as you might know .. So, I'll be so interesting
in a project like OFOQ when it reaches some advanced stages at its road
map to run the GIS on its platform . Having a PDA that could run a Tiny
part of the GIS engine could be a fancy application.

I'd to invite you to Host the Project under Handasa Arabia Organization
and start a mailing list after you get some interested developers and
I'm sure that you will have.. and I'm inviting all the members around to
share and participate the development of GeoINFO...
Finally , Thank you so much for considering HA as a destination for
introducing your powerful GIS engine.
================
Note : All the information provided in the GIS examples is from a net
search that added to my knowledge about GIS applications. ( correct any
wrong piece if any )

Best Regards,

=========================================

RHCE and RHCT are performance-based tests that measure actual competency on live systems. Other training programs teach students to answer multiple-choice questions instead of how to perform on real-world systems.

Red Hat training and testing focuses on practical hands-on skills.

No wonder Red Hat's RHCE Program has been called the "crown jewel" of Linux certifications! And a recent Independent Survey ranked RHCE the "Top Highest Quality Training and Certification in IT"!

Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE), Red Hat Certified Technician (RHCT) and all of Red Hat's Developer, Security, and eBusiness courses provided by Linux-Plus in Egypt offer the following values and qualities:

·       Quality assured through RHCE certification of instructors

Linux-Plus offers also Red Hat courses that focus on specific areas of
expertise, such as e-business, security and embedded technologies.

All courses are designed to create a basis for further development and
real-world practice. Good training can provide a foundation; the participant must do the rest. As an alternative to classroom-based training, Red Hat offers an extensive set of online courses.

Our audience focus is the IT professional: system administrator, network administrator, system engineer, web engineer, and developer. Our technical focus is on the skills and competencies required to manage Linux servers and systems for mission-critical commercial and business roles, including:

May be something like idrisi or whatever !!

Good

Why that limit ??

What is the license of geoGPG ??
Are we allowed legally to use their symbols ??

> d.. Font File format (convert 24 font from

The same question as above !

>
>
> v geoINFO supported features
>

What that limit ??
May be on older machines that was a reasonable limit, but now gigs of ram are
normal.

Again, why do we have limits on all of the above ?

Really it is nice application, and we would like to see it progressing.
