Newland: I second Torvalds Motion, It's Time to Dump the Penguin

20050401 "Newland: I second Torvalds Motion, It's Time to Dump the Penguin"

Let us, on this most sacred day only, become a world of fools. Let us
imagine the unimaginable.

Upon reading "Torvalds: It's Time to Dump the Penguin"
http://www.linux.org/news/LO2005/mascot_20050401.html I replied:

I propose we adopt the image of one of several Linus characters:

1) Linus of Peanuts fame, assuming the owner would grant a no-fee license
to the free software community, for GPL'd software only

2) Linus Pauling, perhaps the world's greatest chemist of all time

3) Linus of Linux fame, a geek of our own, to trump the be-spectacled image of
the Monopolist Corporation geek

With all due respect to 3), I prefer option 1) so let me elaborate:

Please see:

http://www.unitedmedia.com/comics/peanuts/meet_the_gang/meet_linus.html

Perhaps there is no bigger fool than I. However, launching a
partnership that, in turn, launches the free software community's
write-once, run-anywhere operating system, media kit, etc., under the
visage of world loved cartoon characters would, as Emril would say,
let's "kick it up a notch", on the world stage of human comedy.

Seeking Critical Comments

Greetings,

I have been revising a book I released last year, "Penguin in the Pew",
which helps the Christian community (specifically) to understand free and
open source (noting the somewhat subtle difference) software, especially
GNU/Linux. RMS communicated with me last year that he believes Christians
should see the moral imperative in free software. I happen to agree, and
think that, at the very least, we need to wrestle with the question of
morality and software licenses.

I have written to some extent about these philosophical issues, and would
like to receive some feedback on my presentation of them. While I recognize
some differences between the FSF and the OSI, I have attempted to help
Christians grasp the nature of the debates within the FOSS community and
between the FOSS and proprietary communities. Your religious views are less
important than your feedback on my presentation.

I anticipate finishing the project and releasing the book for print by the
end of the month, so time is fairly important. While you're welcome to
review the complete book, I would ask potential critics from this list to
focus on three chapters, where the philosophical and legal questions are
most addressed. Proceeds from the sale of the book will fund my own
advocacy efforts in the Charlotte, NC area.

If you are interested in offering feedback please e-mail me off-list. I
will then provide a link to download the OOo Writer doc.

Regards,
Don

NYC LOCAL: Tuesday 12 April 2005 Lisp NYC: Bob Coyne on WordsEye, the natural language text to three dimensional picture system

<blockquote
  what="official Lisp NYC announcement">

  From: Heow Eide-Goodman <lists <at> alphageeksinc.com>
  To: lisp <at> lispnyc.org
  Date: 30 Mar 2005 12:04:23 -0500

Please join us for our next meeting on Tuesday, April 12th from 7:00 pm
to 9:00 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Bob Coyne, entrepeneur and old-school Lisp developer will be presenting
a special lisp-eyes-only preview of WordsEye. It is the culmination of
years of work and highlights the technology that he developed. It is,
  of course, written in Lisp.

WordsEye: Creating 3D scenes from textual descriptions

WordsEye allows untrained users to spontaneously and
interactively create 3D scenes by simply describing them. By
using natural language, ordinary users can quickly create 3D
scenes without having to learn special software, acquire
artistic skills, or even touch a desktop window-oriented
interface. Creating graphics with natural language gives a
new sense of power to words and suggests applications in
education and creative play as well as the creation of visual
art itself. WordsEye relies on a large database of 3D models
and images to depict objects and surface textures. WordsEye
is written in Common Lisp and runs on Linux.

"Adobe Open Source License" GPL compatible?

http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/xmp/sdk/license.txt

I suspect it isn't due to the following ...

... however it isn't clear whether these do not apply if source is
distributed and what the effect on its GPL compatibility would be if
that were the case.

Yes.

And what you see there isn't true either. Apart from the GNU Republic,
compilations can't be infected by the GPL. And derivative works under
copyright law (not GNU copyright law), fall under the GPL and only
the GPL. The concept of "GPL incompatibility" is an idiot test.

My answer is below it. As far as the GPL is concerned, everything
is compatible with it. It might not be so under jursidiction of
the GNU Republic (where only Mr President Stallman knows and rules
what is "compatible"), but who cares?

alexander.

Your insultuous tone alone removes you any credibility you could have at
the eyes of one who is ignorant of the law.

Because those that have somewhat more insight, see that your arguments
do not apply, because you're talking of a radically different concept
(first sale doctrine) than (re)distribution as if they where the exact
same thing.
