AFFS Conference report?

I'm sure someone was writing up a conference report?

Any progress? Did it involve getting copies of presentations?

Simon, realising his memory of Jason's presentation isn't quite as
detailed as he would have liked.

Brian has written a conference report and I think Alex has the minutes.
It's just waiting transfer to the web site. I'll see how soon I can
get that done. I don't have all the presentations yet.

We're getting a bit bogged down. Like you all, we're volunteers who
do other things with our day times (and currently most evenings, in
my case at least). Our TODO is currently:

   1. post-AFFSAC press release
   2. Publish conference report and minutes
   4. Rename campaigns to IGs
   5. Web site fixes
   6. forward patent email
   7. softwarepatents.co.uk PR
   8. Check EU/EP site about patent vote date

Can anyone help with any of these, please? 1, 7 and 8 are the easiest
to do, I think. (3 was done.)

Re: hacker definition

Hi,

Sometime ago I wrote in about chasing up C4's IdeasFactory
<http://ideasfactory.tv/> about the worng information they were giving out.

Well, as was suggested here I wrote them and the editor replied today
accepting my position and also inquired whether I could write an article
with *links* to relevant *UK specific* resources.

Apart from the usual free software inspired solutions like Creative
Commons I feel there might be a chance to give publicity to the
empowering and 'political' aspects of free software.

Anyone interested and with more time at hand? I have written back asking
for more info.

[Alug]Fwd: [Debian-uk] Software patents pubmeet in Cambridge

I think I'll be there...

From: Wookey <wookey <at> aleph1.co.uk>
Subject: [Debian-uk] Software patents pubmeet in Cambridge
Date: Mon, 2 Jun 2003 17:16:21 +0100 (BST)

A few of us in Cambridge are trying to increase public/geek/programmer
awareness of EU software Patent legislation which is pending, and things
are currently balanced between very bad, and quite reasonable, legislation.

The issues are complicated. Any of you who are local and would like to be
better informed, especially in order to make intelligent points to your
representatives, would benefit from coming along. Here's the blurb:

-----

Hi there,

Join other software developers and Intellectual Property practioners at a
pubmeet to in Cambridge discuss the proposals.

As you may know, the EU is working on a directive covering software
patenting. The next vote is scheduled for the 16th or 17th of June in the
JURI subcommittee, which deals with legal affairs and the internal market.
The final vote on the proposed directive by the European Parliament is
currently scheduled for the end of June. The outcome of the process could
affect individual software developers as well as small and larger companies
but there isn't general awareness about the issues.

Meet at the Free Press, Prospect Row, 8pm Thursday 5th June. The Free Press

I wouldn't bother waiting til you have all the presentations - just put up
what you've got, and optionally name-and-shame the missing donors!

No point saying you're bogged down if you haven't said "can anyone do..."!

Requires conference report and minutes, I guess. Do you have a template of
any form, and a distribution fax/email list?

> 4. Rename campaigns to IGs

Presumably on web site?

> 5. Web site fixes

... list them, I'll do them (and perhaps sneak in a numbering-from-0 fix
too). How's the site controlled at the mo? Is all content in CVS?

The point of the previous message was to ask "can anyone do..."
I'll reply to other points when my blood settles, or maybe Alex or
someone else will.

AFFS Elections - Call For Nominations

Dear AFFS Members,

If you were dying to be involved more actively in the AFFS, but didn't
know how, this could be your chance! As discussed at the AGM (OT:
minutes & report forthcoming, apologies for the delay...), we are
looking for people to join the exec committee of the AFFS.

Ideally, we are looking for people with a reasonable amount of free
time, dedication to Free Software, and the ability to help us organise
events, press releases, co-ordinate with other organisations, all sorts.

It may be that you wish to focus on a specific campaign, or you wish to
help us generally, either could be good. We aren't looking for people to
fill specific posts, so the ability to take ownership of a particular
area is definitely there if it's something new for us.

Apart from the commitment to promote free software (and, not promote
proprietary software), the other constitutional commitment is that you
must attend committee meetings, which happen around four times a year.
Obviously, we would also want you to be doing things above and beyond
that, but that is the absolute minimum - so, if you can't even commit to
that, this probably isn't for you. Rewards include meeting new people,
being involved in some exciting work and all-round general good karma.

Clearly, you are now desperate to nominate yourself! So, how to do it?
First, you have to be a full member of the AFFS. You also need to submit
your nomination to us in writing - email to affs-ctte at affs.org.uk is
sufficient. You don't need to be seconded, but including your 'platform'
(i.e., why people should elect you) is useful. At some point in the
future (this call for nominations will last for two weeks) we will then

I'm busy for the next seven days, but happy to
offer help after that, should you still need it.

What's the easiest way to Metz? I only find tortuous routes.
