Need your help

Hi fsf-friends,

This is exciting! Along with 187,759 people I signed a petition asking the Prime Minister to hold a public consultation before taking a decision on the nuclear liability bill. These petitions were delivered to the Standing Committee looking at the bill and now they have decided to hold a public consultation.

The bill in its current form lets the foreign corporations get away by paying a meagre amount in case of a nuclear accident in India. The major chunk of the expenses will be borne by the Indian tax payers. But now we have a chance to change this bill and make it stronger.

Greenpeace, an NGO working on this issue, has prepared an open letter which states the changes required in the bill. Just like the petition, this letter will stand a chance of being considered if lots of us sign it. We have less than two weeks to change the bill and prevent another Bhopal in the making.

I have already added my signature.

Can you add your signature to this letter?

http://www.greenpeace.org/india/change-the-liability-bill

Thanks!

You are receiving this email because someone you know sent it to you from the Greenpeace site. Greenpeace retains no information about individuals contacted through its site, and will not send you further messages without your consent -- although your friends could, of course, send you another message.

By that logic we should be discussing the oil spill in the Gulf of
Mexico, the rising prices in India, the corruption of government and
bureaucracy, the rise of English-speaking people in China, the sinking
of the South Korean ship and about 1/2 a billion other worthy causes
here.

This list is meant for the discussion of Free Software in relationship
to India. Any other subject, however "worthy", is off-topic here.

And don't forget, your idea of worth differs from mine, as mine does
from other peoples'.

In short, bringing in arbitrary social issues into a mailing list with a
specified objective is spam and, in my opinion, worthy of moderation.

Re: Need your help

Often its the arguments on "spam and moderation" that turns out to be
worthy of deletion than what those that are "considered" spam. History
shows that Raj is almost always the first one to get offended!

I fully agree with you. But the post in question was more in the nature
of a request to support a cause that should be of interest to all
Indians. Specifically, it was not a post for initiating a discussion on
a topic. It is possible that some of us may have never heard of this
matter from another source. To that extent, I guess, we can let it go.
Perhaps, an [OT] label would have been appropriate. This is not to say
that people campaigning for anything can post such requests to this
list. But, I guess, an occasional such post on some matter of public
interest can be tolerated.

Regards
Sasi

Yes, because when I join a list on Free Software I expect it to be about
Free Software. When I need arbitrary social issues I'll be sure to join
a list discussing (or announcing) arbitrary social issues.

Once again, and this is in reply to Sasi too, there is a clearly-defined
line between being on-topic and being off-topic. If off-topic
discussions are permitted, please allow me to regularly present my views
on subjects that I consider important but which may be of zero interest
to other members of the group. Hell, who needs a list, let's just join
Facebook or Twitter and continue our inane conversations there!

So without further ado let's talk about "Ravan", why it failed at the
box office, whether this represents a decline in the Rai-Bacchan
popularity in the country, who is likely to take up the slack -- SRK,
Aamir, Hrithik or some new entity altogether? -- and how this changes
the dynamics of the Bollywood Film Industry. I can bet more people
would be interested in that than in some bill in parliament (and yes, I
know about the bill and I support opposing it, but still maintain that
it has NOTHING to do with this mailing list.)
